As a young adult, my mother called me Dear Abby. I would drop everything to console a friend at any given moment. I was raised to put others first and strived to counsel those in need. After noticing the warmth I got helping other’s self-doubt or uncertainty and how quickly they trusted me, my career was bound to be in serving others. One of my strongest qualities is having empathy for others. People open up to me very easily, including those who don’t let others get emotionally close to them. My passion to help others has evolved to become an integral part of the educated, diversified and motivated woman that I am today. I have always thought my purpose in life is to uplift and take care of others. I thrive on the opportunity to solve complicated …show more content…
It was not until my sophomore year at Michigan State University when I found the career path of genetic counseling. I was instantly attracted to studying genetics because the human genome astonished me and enabled me to work with the two things I love – Genetics, and caring for those in need. My main motive in studying genetics is the desire to contribute to the growing medical fields and give my utmost help to our society to overcome genetic diseases. I will graduate with a major in Genomics and Molecular Genetics with a minor in Health Promotion at Michigan State University Lyman Briggs College. This sustained and comprehensive genetics major makes me distinguished among other applicants since my understanding of genetics and genomics is much more in-depth and my dedication to pursuing a genetic counseling career is my end goal. Lyman Briggs College has prepared me tremendously for genetics with the courses it has required. I have taken three biology courses as well as a microbiology lab and will be enrolled in two more microbiology labs in the spring. I have worked with PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA extraction, gram staining, and statistical analysis in biology labs. So far, in the microbiology lab, I have worked with an unknown isolate …show more content…
In my third year at Michigan State, I was enrolled in a class called Research in Biology. The goal of this course was to determine if there was a genetic marker to tell three different species of Rhagoletis flies apart due to their shared phenotypes and the infestation of apples, which became quarantined when one species was found in the orchards. If the other two species were found in the orchards, they would do no harm and the apples would be safe. Using their mitochondrial genomes, we ran gel electrophoresis and Nanodrop analysis and sent the DNA to Michigan State’s genomic core lab to be processed by Illumina. After getting the data back, our lab used a development node called Trimmomatic to eliminate adapter sequences, poor quality control bases, and ambiguous bases. Then the sequence was loaded into Velvet where it was trimmed to the desired k-mer length for alignment and contig formation. Mitos and MEGA alignment Explorer were also used in order to get the DNA sequence to a
In conclusion, it is important for nurses to have proper training and information in the area of genetics and genomics so that it can be used in daily clinical practice (Thompson & Brooks, 2011). Using this information with clients and conducting a detailed genetic nursing assessment is a valuable component of being an effective health care provider and can help clients recognize, prevent, and/or treat diseases that are unique to their particular
In today’s modern age science is moving at a rapid pace; one of those scientific fields that has taken the largest leaps is that of genetics. When genetics first comes to mind, many of us think of it as a type of science fiction, or a mystical dream. Yet genetics is here, it is real, and has numerous ethical implications.
I tend to be analytical, as previously mentioned, and supportive of others. Upholding high principles of morality and ethics have made me flourish as I have a lot of empathy towards the needy.
Relate to the audience: I am pretty sure that most of us have studied biology whether in high school or college, hence today’s presentation will guide you more about your genetic health screening.

In the near future my goal is to further my studies; in the nursing field as a Registered nurse. Personally, my main objectives to become a Registered nurse are, to help save the lives of other, accomplishing my goal, and living life more independently. These are the qualities that would best describe personality: enthusiastic, loving, caring, compassionate, honest, and a cheerful individual. I grow up to have deep passionate love for people, especially those that are unable to help themselves on a daily basis. I always vision myself attending to someone’s rescue; that is in danger or in critical condition. What I have noticed from a long time ago; is that the nursing industry is one out of many that devotes their time, patient, and input hard work and effort to help meet the need of others and make a difference.
Modern techniques , rather than the gene map , maps the map of the DNA within the gene itself : the positions of short sequences " marker " are used as markers signaling over the cromosssomas . Once a gene is discovered, it is necessary to unravel its base sequence prior to its function being studied . The sequencing has become easier with the development of methods for cloning the DNA - producing large amounts of identical fragments. In the method most widely used DNA sequencing , the chain is denatured into single strands . These are then used as templates for DNA synthesis , but such that replication to as the double helix reaches a certain growth in the mold base . In addition to provide DNA polymerase and the four bases, A - G -C- T, also using small amounts of these dideoxynucleotide bases. This is incorporated , as the normal bases, the double helix growth but prevent the continuation of the chain. The fragments are then separated by gel electrophoresis and the base seq...
Within the past thirty years, researchers have found strong evidence linking genes and disease. The development of predictive genetic tests followed shortly after the isolation of certain candidate genes. Although predictive genetic screening is only available for a handful of diseases, its effects and ramifications have become hotly debated issues in a wide range of areas, from government to religion. The debate began in the 1993 when researchers isolated the BRCA1 gene, which is associated with increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. The discovery of this gene led to excitement and speculation of developing a predictive genetic test to identify those women at risk for these cancers. In this paper, I will first describe the biology of genetic testing, and then discuss the pros and cons of predictive genetic testing.
There are countless people who aspire to help people in their lives. However, if you think about it, nearly every career helps others in some way, shape, or form. Teachers, scientists, policemen and various other careers aid people in different ways. I, like many others, have always known that I’ve wanted to help people. Yet, I also want to do more than that. I want to help others, but also save others- emotionally or physically, mentor others, inspire others, and be there for others during their most vulnerable times. This is who I am- and I have always been this person. In first grade, I ran a lemonade stand at my school for the Make-A-Wish Foundation; I got my third grade class to raise money for starving children; and I put up with bullying throughout middle school because I befriended a girl who had trouble making friends on her own. The quality of pure selflessness and care for others that I have always possessed would allow me to do something great with my life- it just took me some time to figure out what.
When people ask my friends what kind of person I am, they will said I am honest, trustworthy, smart, kind, positive, and considerate. I enjoy working and helping people. I used to work at a Physical Therapy Clinic with geriatric and Home Health. When they people come in to physical therapy they are in pain and depressed. I will try to help them get as comfortable as possible and talk to them to make their day better.
I can go from shopping for fashion forward heels and clothes with my girlfriends at the mall to sparring for an hour with my predominantly male trainees at my Brazilian jiu-jitsu gym. My diverse interest in music from alternative rock to rap, reggae, Spanish music to country enables me to connect with different individuals. It is effortless for me to hold a conversation and relate to people from all walks of life because of my exposure and appreciation of different cultures. I believe my most relatable characteristic is having faced adversity and overcoming it. When I was 15 years of age my father had a massive brain injury that changed my family’s life
Dwarfism In today’s modern world modern world there are many genetic disorders and many different genetic tests that can be done. But the question being should you be required to have a genetic counselor? Some people enjoy having a genetic counselor while on the other hand some do not. Genetic counseling what is it?
Through religious practices I have always been taught about having gifts and the power of positive thinking. Gifts are essentially talents that are given to an individual by God that can be used to help others in life. Though I may not be aware of all my talents I believe that I have the gift of service. I love to aid individuals in any way that I can whether it’s through community service, giving donations or simply just listening to someone vent. This ties into my self-concept because it serves some background on how I view myself in terms of my purpose in life.
I am really good at keeping up with my work because I stay focused and know when to slack off and when not to. I'm also good at being a good friend or classmate and helping people. Whenever my friends or family need help I will always be there for them. One of my strengths is that I am confident in myself and my friends. I know that as long my family and friends believe in me, I can do anything I set my mind to.
From the past, I realized that I have changed in many ways. However, somethings I have ignored and refused to change. As time passes by, I have pondered over how my personality has changed towards the way I feel about friends and other people. Over much thought and refection, I now understand.I have lived in with many different people and environments. I dealt with many different personalities, relationships, and backgrounds. These situations and experiences have taught me to them keep personal issues to yourself. The ability of getting along with people in short time might seem easy but real trust takes time. I am also very generous and kind hearted when it comes to offering help to those in need. I would buy others gifts and give money to those who is in need . One of traits that has not changed and I strongly believe it is the one gift I use every time to open people
