Suddenly, the end of the year sneaks up on you. This time of the year is always so busy (in a good way) and packed to the brim with craziness. At the end of the year we wrote folklore stories, and four of them were turned into plays. I was in one about the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. My character had a mustache that unexpectedly fell off during the play. I improvised and said that I had shaved. There also were mini acts between each play where people could showcase a talent. I performed a comedy act, that everyone loved. After the plays, our class went out for fro-yo at Yummie’s. Ultimate Brawl Dance Competition, also known as “Ultimate Brawl: Battle of Distinction,” is a hip-hop dance competition held each year that showcases some of the most talented dance teams from the west side of the United States. 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe, a hip-hop dance team that formed in University of California, Riverside nineteen years ago, hosts this show every year at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside. This year Ultimate Brawl was held on April 19, 2014, marking the fourteenth year in production. The show line up made up of widely known exhibition and competition teams, such as Cookies, Kings and Queens, and 220, kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me a genuine feeling of the emotion presented by each performer.
We recently watched the movie Ballet 422 and were required to take some simple notes on it. We were given no special instruction for these notes, except to simply write down things, or events, that stuck out to us in the movie. I am now aware that these notes were made to aid us in comparing color guard with these ballet performers. I realized that we both are always aiming to perform better, are able to adjust to overcome obstacles, and we all make mistakes, no matter how professional we are.
My first choice was a ballet piece named La Sylphide. La Sylphide is a story about a young Scottish man named James who is soon to be wed. He falls asleep and has an intricate dream about a beautiful sylphide, which is a spirit. In his dream they dance and he soon falls in love with the sylphide. When he awakes, he soon forgets about the sylphide and focuses on his fiancée.
It was my final moments as a Chelsea High School cheerleader. My final banquet had quickly approached. It was then that I realized I was not ready for the season to be over. I stood in front of my friends, fellow cheerleaders, and their families as they watched and waited for me to recite my last words as the season came to an end. It took hours for me to write about what my teammates and my coaches meant to me. I did not want to sound too nostalgic since I’m not the emotional type, but I also did not want to come across as indifferent. It was a difficult task but I knew I could accomplish it.
Imagine this. You’re getting exorbitantly dressed and ready to see a performance of Swan Lake at Carnegie Hall. You have been earnestly waiting for months to watch what spectacular talent and beauty awaits. The hype of going to see this show in person has put you in a daze. You finally get into your seats and wait for the curtains to open. At this moment you are about to jump out of your seat and rip those curtains off the latch. They finally open and a ballerina playing the role of Odette appears with her stunning outfit. She gracefully walks out onto the stage to start the show. The fall dance concert, Rise, was held in the University Theatre at California State University Dominguez Hills. The individuals that helped make this concert come to life are the faculty choreographers: Amy Michelle Allen, Marco Carreon, Sarah Cashmore, Jeff Hendrix, Erin Landry, Doris Ressl Acosta, and Kenneth Walker. They were accompanied by two senior student choreographers, Alanna Neely-Sanchez and Mavra Pedraza.
With the help of the Me To We team at Queen Street Public School, I volunteered at a local food bank. The experience was quite educational and fascinating. We encouraged staff and students to donate non-perishable food items for the "We Scare Hunger" campaign. This was definitely a highlight of my grade five year because I felt very humble and warm-hearted by doing a simple act of kindness. In addition, I was chosen to participate in the "Intergenerational" program. This was created so that grade five students can learn more from the elders of the Burton Manor senior home. We had the privilege to learn about their history and interact with them through several educational and fun activities. If accepted, I will indeed join several clubs and teams to contribute my time and talents to make the school an exciting learning
The next work of the program, Courtly Airs and Dances, is a multi-movement work composed by Ron Nelson. The piece is split into six movements: Intrada, Basse Danse, Pavane, Saltarello, Sarabande, and Allemande. Each of these present distinct characteristics that separate it from each other movement, yet all are united by being a style of dance. The first movement, Intrada, presents a fanfare-like opening to the multi-movement work. The trumpets and brass section as a whole lead this, as they create a sense of nobility. The key is major and the tempo is one that could be described as allegretto—it is not a fast tempo, yet more brisk than an andante pace. After watching, Save the Last Dance on an NBC affiliate television station, I would analysis if the movie both had the characteristics and displayed the functions of Mass media. Characteristics that must be presented for mass media to have taken place are mass media must be presented and this large audience must have delayed feedback. First and foremost, I would take into consideration whether or not the film had “Mass Media” meaning a large audience which it does due to how it is presented which I will speak further into momentarily. The group dynamic and team cohesion among the 1999 Women’s soccer team was unbelievably superb. In the video, after so many years of being apart they all came together again. Each complementing each other in conversation, almost as if they were never even apart.
