Ultimate Brawl Dance Competition, also known as “Ultimate Brawl: Battle of Distinction,” is a hip-hop dance competition held each year that showcases some of the most talented dance teams from the west side of the United States. 909 Hip Hop Dance Troupe, a hip-hop dance team that formed in University of California, Riverside nineteen years ago, hosts this show every year at the Fox Performing Arts Center in Riverside. This year Ultimate Brawl was held on April 19, 2014, marking the fourteenth year in production. The show line up made up of widely known exhibition and competition teams, such as Cookies, Kings and Queens, and 220, kept me on the edge of my seat and gave me a genuine feeling of the emotion presented by each performer. Ultimate Brawl is known to be a very lengthy show lasting about four hours long. This year’s line up consisted of sixteen competition teams and thirteen exhibition teams. When watching a performance, besides focusing on the execution and expression of the movement, my eyes were usually drawn to the performer’s face because that is what entertains me most. If I see a performer that expresses energetic movement and happiness yet the performer’s face is blank, I am usually never satisfied and left in confusion of what to feel as I watch. I prefer seeing over expression than lack of expression to know what to feel. …show more content…
For example, a hip-hop team from San Diego, known as 220, performed a set that really focused on the musicality of each song. The pieces were more patient with each move, yet executed with immense control going from very sharp hits to grooves. Usually 220 creates sets that are fast and more “hype” to appeal to the audience’s eye, but this time it seems like they focused more on connecting to the song emotionally with each movement to tell a clear story of their journey as a
The purpose of this post is to discuss Whitney Lindy's Hoppers. The video is from the move "Hellzapoppin" from 1941. This scene appears to be estate workers performing as a band with swing dancers showcasing their moves. The dancing was absolutely incredible! You can see how music plays role in dance, by watching these dancers. They are essentially reacting to the music with dance. Music instigates the dance movement.
Different Dance Styles by Doris Humphrey and Maud Allen that Presented New Dances that Displayed Innovative Movements.
Some values that make activities a sport would be that it’s time consuming, healthy, and also beneficial to emotional and physical requirements. However one concern that has been on people’s minds was why dance is not always considered a sport. There are various reasons to uphold both sides of agreeing or disagreeing the issue, but not all opinions support the fact with reasonable thoughts. “As knowledge about the body increases, dance training improves and the competition for excellence paired with innovation is greater, dancers bodies are pushed to the limits. The physical ability and disciplines expected of a dancer can be easily related to those
Suddenly, the end of the year sneaks up on you. This time of the year is always so busy (in a good way) and packed to the brim with craziness. At the end of the year we wrote folklore stories, and four of them were turned into plays. I was in one about the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team. My character had a mustache that unexpectedly fell off during the play. I improvised and said that I had shaved. There also were mini acts between each play where people could showcase a talent. I performed a comedy act, that everyone loved. After the plays, our class went out for fro-yo at Yummie’s. One fundraising event that we do at Martha Brown is red Nose Day, where you can buy a red nose for a dollar, which is donated to help stop child poverty. Then, another
Armies throughout the ages from ancient Greeks to modern armies on the battle field today all vie for technological and tactical advantages. One technological advantage brought to the battle filed time after time winning small skirmishes to wars is artillery, the king of battle. Modern filed artillery has a vast history in war. As early as the 1st century BC. Artillery was used by the ancient Roman armies to not only create divisive victories on the battle filed but all so to break sieges (www.ancient.eu/article n.d). In 322 BC. Andrews, E. (2013) said that, Alexander the great lay siege to the city of Tyre. This primitive form of artillery took several month to eventually take the city and its 150 foot walls. The King of Battle has stood the test of time by undergoing some major technological and tactical changes throughout history and will continue to be a threat on the battle filed in the future.
Oklahoma was created by the Theater Guild to save themselves from bankruptcy. In order to resolve its financial crisis, the guild brought together Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers, one of the best composers for hit operettas and musical comedies (show time 299). This combination alone guarantees the popularity of the play. What’s more to the play other than reputation of the play wrights, is it’s creativity in several aspects. Unlike other musicals where the songs are merely used to cover scenic changes, Oklahoma uses songs as part of the storytelling and character building (show time 307). Music and dialogue, each is designed to work with the others, which makes Oklahoma a well-made musical play. Even the ballet is an inseparable part of the story. The ballet is completed by characters in the play, which makes it the same style as the entire show (show time 309). What’s more, the dancing adds to the story and the characters, which is unprecedented at the time. The beginning of the show is also quite unorthodox: it doesn’t begin with the typical pretty girls in provocative dresses dancing to jazz. On the contrary, it starts with Aunt Eller and Curly singing “O, what a beautiful morning!” just like in Rigg’s play. Afterall, broadway is always about breaking barriers. I think the innovations of this play is why it has earned such success despite its homogeneous rural setting.
While studying dance in college, there are a wide range of courses that will give you a great chance to learn new development strategies, technical courses techniques for communicating your thoughts to movements, dance genres and ideas of movements. These courses include, technique courses, somatic movement and education, courses and the courses in additional movements. Technique courses deal with the specific dance genres and their techniques, stylistic concerns and contributors. Overall, this type of course focal points will be physical practice and artistic expression. However, there will be discussions on the philosophical, cultural and historical perspectives of the genre you study. Therefore, it contributes to the comprehensive dance
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, CLAP, echoes through my head as I walk to the middle of the mat. "At 160lbs Aidan Conner of La Junta vs. Rodney Jones of Hotchkiss." All I can think of is every bead of sweat, every drip of blood, every mile, every push up, every tear. Why? All of this: just to be victorious. All in preparation for one match, six minutes. For some these six minutes may only be a glimpse, and then again for some it may be the biggest six minutes of their life. Many get the chance to experience it more than once. Some may work harder and want it more than others, but they may never get the chance. All they get is a moral victory. Every kid, every man comes into the tournament with a goal. For some is to win, for some is to place, others are just happy to qualify. These six minutes come on a cold frigid night in February at a place called the Pepsi Center. Once a year this gathering takes place when the small and the large, the best of the best, come to compete in front thousands of people. I am at the Colorado State Wrestling Championships.
This musical is about two rival singing gangs named the Jets and the other the Sharks. The Jets are made up of white male teenagers which the Sharks are colored Puerto Rican teenagers. They don’t like each other and hate one another. The leader of the Jets wants an ex-Jet Tony to join in a fight. They believe the Jets are superior and want to keep other gangs out. Tony gets pressured to go by the Leader and he accepts. Tony begins to have a musical number at his job and sings about how great tonight will be. At a dance, Tony spots a Puerto Rican woman named Maria. They both dance and appear to fall in love. However, both individuals come from two rival backgrounds and interrelations is prohibited. This scene is a classic scene similar to play
In the history of epic rap battles, there is one that stands out more than any other. That is the battle between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. In this battle, the comebacks sting a great deal, the lyrics are creative, and the insults were very relevant at the time of the election. These are the three criteria that I used to judge this epic rap battle. When the smoke cleared and the dust settled from the epic battle, it was my conclusion that Barack Obama won.
Research describes dance to be physical, intellectual and emotional (Brown, 2014). There are many observational tools that will assist in the acquisition of technique and form in serial movement tasks like a dance sequence. Observational learning is used in dance when the expert teacher/choreographer is instructing the sequence or set moves to the novice dancers. Observation is beneficial as it facilitates motor learning and the development of cognitive processing (Rohbandard et al., 2011). Although observation is useful, most studies test acquisition of simple discrete tasks (Rohbandard et al., 2011). The issue that continues to exist is that the body remains an object for the teacher to
This piece choreographed by Brooke, Abby, and myself is entitled “We Are Not”. “We Are Not” makes a statement about independence and not conforming to societal norms to show the audience that you do not have to be what society expects you to be. The aesthetic of this dance is very introspective and intense. I feel very proud of the finished product that we have created, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with my classmates on this project. Our group had a great spirit of collaboration, and every group member put a great amount of effort into the dance. I am honestly astounded by what we have created. At the beginning of the semester I was unsure how I was ever going to be able to help choreograph a dance, because I had never had experience choreographing before. Performing this dance has been a very cathartic experience for me this past week and has been an amazing way for me to deal with the stress of the end of the semester. I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever we perform this dance because I know how hard we worked to create it.
Since the beginning of the semester, my dancing has improved greatly. I started off CP Dance One with absolutely no experience. Less than two months later I have chassés, pas de bourrées, pencil turns, and more under my belt! My confidence and willingness to try new things has also been ameliorated by dance class. In the first few weeks of class, I would shuffle over to the corner and not attempt a move because it looked too intimidating. Additionally, I learned that over-thinking a move and dwelling on how to do it can hurt a dancer’s ability instead of simply executing it. I have also come to appreciate the phrase ‘Practice makes perfect’. In preparing for the performance test on the basic dance, I tried the dance at home multiple times per
My Community Awareness event included attending a live acrobatic dance performance at Bardo Performing Arts Center. The performance consisted of fourteen separate dances or acrobatic numbers with or without music. When the performers were without music they either used stomping, clapping, or individual instruments as a sound for that certain number. The dances that they performed were mostly considered, in the dance world, as modern or jazz style dancing. Instead of perfectly and gracefully carrying their bodies like a ballet dancer they defied those rules and flowed more freely throughout their body. In ballet, you are most always never allowed to flex your foot, but in modern and jazz you are allowed to. Those performers flexed their feet a lot and moved their bodies freely, which would not be allowed in ballet. The last number they performed was without music, but they had steel drums attached to their back side. On their feet were thick like drum sticks. If they kicked their leg backward they could hit the drum and make a noise. Overall, attending an acrobatic dance performance expanded my appreciation for
I have been participating in Native American Indian dancing for around 4 years. I have competed in numerous other competitions like section Conclaves and other small competitions. I have become known in the native community because of the competitions I have competed in, but none of those competitions would or could prepare me for what I would come to face in the summer of 2016. All throughout my dancing career I’ve heard of NOAC, which stands for the National Order of the Arrow Conference. This would be the competition that would change the way I felt toward dancing and how I would want to live the rest of my life.
