People have cheated in college for years without getting caught; is it right to steal other people's work? A kid in college was the top kid in the class and people had always cheated on him during his academic career. He was too afraid to tell any teachers about the kids cheating and making him do the assignments. Until the honor code was established in their university and a peer noticed the kids cheating and talked to him about turning them in. The net day he told the professor and the kids who were cheating were caught and expelled. This is why Broken Arrow and other schools should establish a honor code. Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the strongest and weakest arguments.

The article noted that there are a higher number of honors/AP students who cheat than non-honors/AP students. In one instance someone had taken pictures of an exam and texted it to others along with the answers. Sixty students in a physics class were caught cheating, mostly honor students, including some of the class Top 10. High school occurrences of cheating have received more attention and the cheating rates are high among the AP and honors students. The article goes on to talk about a professor from Stanford University who formed a group to help prevent students from feeling they have to cheat to get ahead and succeed; that succeeding in school is all that matters.
Six weeks before graduation, a local high school has a senior filed trip to a local amusement park. The seniors are to report to their homerooms at 8:45AM to get their bus assignments and this allowed them an hour later arrival than their typical school day for the field trip. As students are arriving at their homerooms and beginning to check in at their buses, your administrative assistant tells you that you have an important phone call that they perceive to be credible and it is pertaining to some of your seniors.
Though the honors code has been around for a long time, it still continues to be left in the dark by students. Donald McCabe states, “high levels of cheating that exist in many American high schools, with roughly two thirds of students... cheated in the last year.”(source F) Cheating is one of the biggest rules to break within the honors code. However, students still continue to do what they please. Alyssa Vangelli informs us, “Students did not fully understand the role of an honor code.”(source B)
Plagiarism is the process in which students improperly gather information such as ideas or personal opinions to complete an assignment. As a student, it is not morally right for me to purposely steal content from another user in order to sustain an excellent grade in the class. That being said, I do conduct research and find sources that may be relevant and useful to my assignments. The difference is that I cite all of my sources and I give credit to all creators because it is the proper way to finish an assignment. Unfortunately, the educational system in college is on a wide scale as students can use many sources of cheating without being caught. My school, Summerlin Academy, boasts a much similar Honor Code, known as the Cadet Creed. This code has driven every aspect of my life since my acceptance into the academy in May of 2014. It has transformed into a better performing citizen who always puts forth the required effort and then some. The honor code applies into all aspects of life, for me it is more than just a code, it is a way of life. No matter what I am doing I need to be trustworthy and the “Honor Code” sets that as a priority, allowing for the delegation of leadership and responsibility.
Cheating in every situation is wrong due to the fact that if we get caught we get in trouble. It isn’t exactly the moral or ethical fact to me personally, it’s more of the issue that if I get caught I get in trouble and end up feeling degraded, although I should have felt that from the start. For some students it doesn’t even faze them. I’m not saying that everyone one who cheats are an awful person, because that would mean just about every student at your average school would be, including me.
When referring to the concept of cheating, there are many definitions that a person may think of. According to Dictionary.com, there are three ways of viewing the term and thus three corresponding definitions. Nevertheless, the unified theme in the idea of cheating is the use of fraud, deception, and dishonesty (Random House Dictionary). Unfortunately, this is a notion that is continually acknowledged as acceptable. One scenario that is commonly concentrated on is the act of cheating in education.
Academic dishonesty, specifically cheating and plagiarism, recently has increased in popularity. Students often justify unethical academic behavior. Technological innovations, like the cellular telephone, have provided students with new methods of cheating. Plagiarism has also been influenced through technologies, specifically internet companies have emerged that provide unethical solutions to academic assignments.
You have to cheat to get ahead in the real world, I am sorry to say that but, it is the truth. In a job interview one may add some things to their resume to make them better then the other people trying for the job. In the real world people cheat all the time, it is the only way to get things done in a quick and efficient manor. Academic cheating, for the most part is more helpful then hurtful. If one can do it right and get away with it, it shows them how to manipulate, how to get them to believe what you did is your own work and believe you. That is much more beneficial to a person in the real world then a paper on the reason...
Sports are governed by sets of rules or customs and often, competition. Sports have always been a way to connect us to our past and to build optimism about the future. Sport’s a way to bond the people despite differences in race, age and gender. However, today the game that is supposed to teach character, discipline and team work is teaching cheating. And in today’s world, with fame, endorsement, drugs and so much to gain, it is not surprising that athletes are cheating in sports. Cheating in sports is not new thing; it started the day when humans first discovered athletic competitions. According to the Los Angeles Times (August 20, 2006) “More than 2,000 years before Mike Tyson bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear and was disqualified in the boxing ring, Eupolus of Thessaly, a boxer in the Olympics of 388 BC, bribed three of his opponents to take dives. Historians consider Eupolus' crime the first recorded act of cheating in sports” (Pugmire 7). We have been seeking an easier way to win. Cheating in sports, which recently has manifested in diverse forms, is more a result of increasing pressure to win from the sponsors and team management, especially in the context of sport becoming a career rather than an act of recreation. What actually constitutes cheating? When does gamesmanship stop and cheating start? And should we try to stop cheating in sports? The use of illegal drugs, huge amount of money and betting is ruining the fame of sports. Hence, cheating in sports is caused by drugs and the desire for endorsement and fame which are getting more effective in recent.
Almost everyone has cheated on or in something in their life. Whether it’s cheating on a test, copying work from the internet, moving pieces on a game board, or taking or having other’s do your work; it’s all cheating. Cheating is not the way to solve a problem or get a better grade. Cheating doesn’t make people cooler, smarter, or more superior else. No matter what situation a person is in, or why they cheat, it is never really okay or justified.
Nobody wants to be labeled as a cheater, whether it’s intentional or not. Some consequences are more extreme than others but most are reasonable. Students should be held accountable for stealing one’s work to use as their own. Plagiarism is unacceptable.
Thirty-six percent of students in high school admitted to cheating (“A Cheating Crisis”). Students feel overwhelmed with the homework load that teachers assign the students. Students feel the pressure to do well in school from both parents and teachers. Teachers do not fully understand why the students feel the need to cheat. Students cheat in school for many reasons, but a few reasons are not understanding material, not asking the teacher, wanting to pass without doing the work, not studying for a quiz, procrastination, pressure from parents and teachers, the use of technology, and finally the attitude of not caring about passing.
