Video games are becoming the norm in today’s society for entertainment, business, and advancement of technology. Countless people with their devices such as smartphones, laptops, and tablets have downloaded video games and played it numerous times in their daily schedules. There is an estimate of fifty-one percent of the world that owned a game console at home such as PlayStation, Xbox, and WiiU. Forty-four percent of smartphone holders today play games on their mobile, while thirty-three have played on other wireless devices like PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS. It became second nature for people to play video games when they’re seeking leisure time to boost their amusement from boredom. However, video games had led to the rise of negative impact for education because people strongly believe that they are a complete distraction from studies and a waste of valuable time. Kids are absorbed into the games which caused them to be absent from reality and time, as they find themselves engrossed into the virtual world. Although video games are meant solely for entertainment, many researchers and game companies over two decades have found ways to apply them to education with the benefit of students being better focused on their subjects and the learning process.
Educational video games have various aspects of resourceful tools and techniques for students of all ages to learn and enhance their arithmetic knowledge and problem-solving skills. Researchers from the New York University and the City University of New York had found studies of middle school students have improved results in overall education when they play math video games. In summary, video games have proven to be an educational tool for all ages. Through various studies, students improve their mathematics, literacy skills, social skills, and physical health by learning and interacting with a variety of entertaining games. Although video games are prejudged as wasteful time and distractive, they are in fact advancing one’s abilities to learn, adapt, and seek possible answers in order to further continue and surpass their educational level. Overall, the most important reward from video gaming is the long-term experience and knowledge one gains from playing and participating.
