I am all alone at the back of the theater with my hands on the faders, my ears are warm, and my eyes fixed ahead, the curtain rises. Theater as an art form is ephemeral in nature as is most performance based pieces. That exclusivity and privilege to come to the theater engage in a communal experience is quiet profound. In 100 years, tonights performance will be just a faint memory, if that. Thats where the true beauty of it is for me; knowing that this performance is unique to each audience member as well as to me and never to be experienced again. My interest in theater dates back to high school where I excelled in technical theater design. My senior I was student technical director and sound engineer for all of our productions and school events. It only seemed logical to continue my studies at Cypress College enrolling by their technical theater program. I surveyed all the different technical fields, but quickly gravitated towards sound. The constant stimulation of sound theory and being able to practice at work made learning practical and useful. I was able to get over the wall of basic knowledge rather quickly and get into the specificity of sound and how to manipulate it to create this sonic master piece that supports the narrative on stage with a transparent design. We studied the Psychoacoustics of sound design, more specifically using the Haas Effect. I used the Haas Effect on my main sound system to help localize the sound to onstage instead of speakers on the wall. The delay on the main speakers shoved the sonic image upstage and the sound system became sonically invisible creating a more intimate
