When you think about school one of the first things that pops into people’s mind is homework. Basically if you have asked your parents or your grandparents they would say that they remember the homework load. Now we all know that homework can be beneficial but also can be very unhealthy with all of the stress that it causes. Over the years the homework load has increased because of the fact that schools think that they need to try to keep up with other countries in academics. And will doing all of this homework now be all for nothing later? The homework load has increased these past couple of years and it is causing a lot of stress on kids and overall is not helping their academics in the long run. Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. Some kids cannot even make it to the dinner table because they have so much homework and that is not healthy for the parents and their childs relationship. Most teachers would think that more homework is something that students should deserve. They believe that homework will make them get better grades, and even a better life. That it will inspire and motivate them to put more effort into what their dream career. But, what if all that isn’t true? What if more homework just decreases a student’s grade, and makes them want to quit life?
As psychologist Robert Leahy points out: "The average high school kid today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the early 1950s. " Teenagers can not handle the pressure of having to get straight A’s, be the best athlete, and still be social with others. Academic work is taking away these kids lives. Receiving an indecent amount of sleep nightly is not fair because not only do teenagers have to struggle to finish all of their classwork, barely even getting sleep, they can never escape it, even on the weekends. Starting school at abnormally early hours prevent many students from getting the amount of hours per night that most teenagers need.
Nearly every high school or college student knows they have done it before - they ended up pulling an all-nighter studying or doing their homework. In fact, only 7.6% of teens get enough sleep each night. Many teens stay up late, but this ends up harming their performance in school and daily life. But there are three possible solutions: beginning school later, assigning less homework, and controlling teens’ use of caffeine. First off, too many students are lacking the daily recommendation of sleep, which links to lower test scores, lower grades, decreased attention span, decreased concentration, and lower academic achievement.

Homework is extremely demanding and many students are spending far too many hours after school to complete their homework assignments. Although, some students may be able to whiz right through their homework, other students crawl along struggling at a snail’s pace. Consequently, family time is put on the back burner due to the time constraints of homework. Additionally, any extracurricular activities are also put on hold. Homework is nothing more than a scapegoat for teachers so that they can pawn off their due responsibilities on parents and students. Homework should be banned for students Kindergarten through 8th grade because the negative effects do not out weight the benefits that come from homework.
Physical health, mental health, environmental health, social health, etc., all work together to make up who we are. A large homework load can control certain aspects of their lives and can greatly affect these areas of health. Most children are active, they go outside and play or find some way to exercise daily. If this time is taken away, the kids are not getting the necessary exercise they need. This could lead to health problems such as obesity. In an article written by Valerie Strauss, she explains part of her research by saying, “Many students wrote that homework causes them to sleep less than they should and leads to headaches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, weight loss and stomach problems, as well as a lack of balance in their lives” (Strauss). These health issues may not be as common in elementary students as they are in high school students but at the rate our schools are increasing the amounts of homework, the number of children with these health problems will increase. The biggest factor in a child’s development is their mental health. Homework is perceived as a burden to utmost people considering people view it as a waste of time that only builds stress. However is it legitimately a waste of time? While it would be beneficial in some ways if teachers simply stopped assigning the students homework, it sadly will never happen. If any person were to ask any teacher to stop assigning homework, they will most likely laugh right in front of you. People may believe that students are all better off not having homework, but it does help academically. Homework helps build working habits and responsibilities to help better prepare us for the work force. Universities across the state have shown that doing homework helps the brain refresh and remember what was taught at school.
Homework is good for all students. Too much homework is bad for a student. Although it is good, there are many reasons why it can be bad when it is given in excessive amounts. The rate of high-school graduates is at its peak, but it can come with some other problems as well as its benefits.
All of this homework is giving students less time to go outside and play or spend time with their family. Kohn says,” One mother told me it permanently damaged her relationship with her son because it forced her to be an enforcer rather than her mother. My opinion on this. I think it is true because when I have homework that I don’t understand I ask my dad but he doesn't know it either, which starts a huge argument between us.
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
Are the new standards and expectations the world has for teenagers really creating monsters? The amount of stress that is put on students these days between trying to balance school, homework, extra curricular activities, social lives, sleep and a healthy lifestyle is being considered a health epidemic (Palmer, 2005). Students are obsessing over getting the grades that are expected of them to please those that push them, and in return, lose sleep and give up other aspects of their lives that are important to them, such as time with friends and family, as well as activities that they enjoy. The stress that they endure from the pressures of parents, teachers, colleges, and peers has many physical as well as mental effects on every student, some more harmful than others. The extreme pressure on students to get perfect grades so that they will be accepted into a college has diminished the concept of actually learning and has left the art of “financing the system” in order to succeed in its place (Palmer, 2005).
High school students feel more stress than working adults, and children are beginning to feel aversion towards learning. Both adolescents and children are at risk of health issues due to anxiety and less time is spent with family, playing, and sleeping. The cause for all of this is too much homework that is suffocating students. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and even forces students to give up extracurricular activities. These negative results can be improved by reducing the homework load.
