A wise person once said, “Being strong doesn’t mean you’ll never get hurt. It means even when you get hurt, you’ll never let it defeat you.” This quote relates to the short story “Fly Away Home,” by Eve Bunting. In this story, a young boy named Andrew lives in an airport with his father, while living there Andrew shows us that it is important to stay strong through tough times. In the beginning of the story, being strong through tough times comes up a lot. In one instance in the story, Andrew couldn’t talk with the people he knew at the airport because they could get him noticed. This shows that he stayed strong because it's really tempting to talk to people you know and want to carry on conversation with, but Andrew had to choose his way …show more content…

For example, Andrew only had one parent to look up to since his mom passed away. This shows that Andrew is tough because he had to watch kids walking around the airport laughing, talking, and having a good time with both of their parents while he only had his dad. Secondly, Andrew had strength when he carried luggage for people at the airport, even when he got turned down. Andrew had tons of strength through this time because he had to accept the fact that he might not get money for everything even when it was going to be used towards something good. For many of us, this would be extremely hard to deal with if we got turned down for this kind of stuff. I know personally that every time I get turned down my heart skips a beat. To me, and probably Andrew too, being turned down is really hard to deal with. Most likely, Andrew was denied many more times in one day than we are in a week. Another example to show that staying strong through tough times is important, is when Andrew’s dad was looking for apartments, and Andrew knew his dad would never afford it. According to the story Andrew asks, “Will we ever have our own apartment again?” Because Andrew asks this, His dad looks through newspapers to see if there are any homes available for them. But deep down, Andrew already knows they can’t afford one. Andrew demonstrates strength here he had to recognize that he can’t get his hopes up, …show more content…

To begin with, Andrew was strong even when he thought he and his father would live in the airport for forever. Strength is illustrated here because it’s really challenging to keep going during those times when you have lived in a airport for a majority of your life. If you lived in an airport for five years, and didn’t find a home in that time length, how much hope would you have about the future? Probably not any. But Andrew still had hope even when half of his childhood life was spent sneaking through airport terminals avoiding authorities. Also, as Eve Bunting states in “Fly Away Home,” Andrew has a hard time hearing people say, “It’s so good to be home.” This takes a lot of strength because it must have been really tempting to go to those people and ask why homes were given to them but not to Andrews family. But Andrew stayed tough and didn’t do that because he still had some faith in him that believed in a good future. More importantly, Andrew stayed tough when he thought of the brown bird that was stuck in the door. Andrew had to cope with a lot of hurt and sadness throughout his childhood, but when Andrew thought of this brown bird, he remembered that it wasn’t trapped forever. Eventually, a door opened and the bird went home. This is what kept Andrew going because he believed that like the bird, a door would open and Andrew would find a new place to call home. All of this means
