Fly Away Home: Theme Literary Essay Ava Bont Have you ever had a time when you had to never give up? Never giving up means keep trying until you get it. In the story, Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting, the theme is never giving up. The first reason to support the claim is the bird, who never gives up on trying to get out of the airport. The second reason to support the claim is the dad, who never gives up on finding a school that Andrew can go to. The last to support the claim is Andrew, who never gives up on earning money for him and his dad to buy an apartment. He works on bringing the luggage carriers back to the people that work at the airport. He also helps people carry their luggage to the airport. This helps to show that Andrew never gives up because he doesn’t stop working until he has to. He keeps trying to earn more money for him and his dad to buy an apartment for them to live in. That is one of the reasons I believe that the theme is never giving up. In the end of the story, Andrew’s dad helps Andrew be able to go to school. His dad says to Andrew, “Andrew you have to start school this Summer.” Andrew answers, “How?” His dad responds back with, “I don’t know but you’re going.” This shows how Andrew’s dad really believes that Andrew will go to school next Fall. It also shows how Andrew’s never gives up on Andrew going to school. He helps him by never giving up and making him go to school. In conclusion, the bird, Andrew, and Andrew’s dad are all hard working and never give up. They all work hard to do something to change their lives. The bird, getting out of the airport. Andrew, saving money to eventually buy an apartment. Last, Andrew’s dad, never giving up on getting Andrew to school. This is important to show that even though you might not get what you want at first, if you keep trying you could do whatever you want and make your dreams come true. The entire poem is based on powerful metaphors used to discuss the emotions and feelings through each of the stages. For example, she states “The very bird/grown taller as he sings, steels/ his form straight up. Though he is captive (20-22).” These lines demonstrate the stage of adulthood and the daily challenges that a person is faced with. The allusions in the poem enrich the meaning of the poem and force the reader to become more familiar with all of the meaning hidden behind the words. For example, she uses words such as innocence, imprisonment and captive to capture the feelings experienced in each of the stages.
It reveals that Louie is trying hard to become a better person and excel in life.
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian showed all of the problems that arose in Junior’s journey. From poverty and alcoholism to bulimic semi-girlfriends, he had so many excuses to stop, but the passion of his dreams pushed him forward. Like a hero, Junior continued, determined to do well and build a greater future for himself. An example that showed Junior’s passion for education and desire to achieve his goals was when he threw an old geometry textbook at his teacher: “My school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study from the same dang books our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world…My hopes and dreams floated up in a mushroom cloud” (Alexie, 31). Junior clearly understood his disadvantaged education and he was very upset about it. He longed for a better education. Junior was passionate about education, because it would allow him to achieve his goals and break the depressing pattern he was trapped in. Bravery and determination are caused by passion, and heroes are very passionate about their actions. Passion clearly drove Junior when he walked to school, since he said, “Getting to school was always an adventure…Three times I had to walk all the way home. Twenty-two miles. He then continues to say, “Do you want to miss a match? Blow your ride?” The pressure that his dad puts on him to be rebellious like him made Andrew get into detention in the first place simply because he got caught. Andrew describes that he “taped Larry Lester’s buns together”, he then goes on to say “that the bizarre thing is that I did it for my old man.” This further proves that Andrew’s dad has influenced the way he has behaved, and his parent-adolescent conflict worsens as his push for freedom establishes a harsher, goal-seeking father. Instead of becoming close in a new, harmonious way, it appears Andrew and his father will eventually distance themselves from one another. The lack of education can lead to poverty and poverty can lead to a lack of education, this is a cycle that is hard to get out of. Author Wes mother was able to go to college and get her degree. She wasn 't the first to go or the first two finished. She was able to overcome the situation poverty and found a way to go to college. This desire for college was something she gave to author Wes. She knew the public school was a bad place to be for her son so she did what she had to have the money to send Wes to Riverdale Country School. Author Wes got the schooling that had more of a focus on attending college as an end goal by attending Riverdale Country School. Since he went to Riverdale Country School he got the desire to get a degree that he probably would have never got in the public school in his neighborhood. Cedric was left behind by his education before college. He had alot of things to go through with his mom always struggling with payments. He had a difficult life lived in the ghetto his father was in jail but Cedric has a dream. His dream was to attend college a good one. He waned to accomplish his dream so bad that he worked so hard.

The angel makes many mistakes with his miracles. However, the family that houses him, though they treat him as inferior, does have a turn of fate because of his existence. Even when Jim is in this awful war-stricken place, one thing that he can still find comfort in, and which reminds him of his peaceful home is the birds, which are everywhere, still living their lives unaffected by mans war. This shows how nature is unaltered by mans cruel antics against other man, and how life and nature must, and will go on through all circumstances.
Junior sometimes had to go to bed hungry, but that wasn’t the worst thing about being in poverty. He made a diary entry stating, “Poverty= empty refrigerator+empty stomach. And sure sometimes my family misses a meal…and hey, in a weird way, being hungry makes food taste better (8).” This really puts the diary reader in his shoes about how many times he had to go without food and starve while trying to go to sleep, simply because his family couldn’t afford it. But to Junior, being hungry wasn’t necessarily that bad. What he felt was the worst thing about his poverty was that there was no money to save his beloved animal Oscar. Oscar became really ill and Junior wanted to take the animal to the doctor, but the family couldn’t afford it. When it came down to it, his father had to put the dog out of misery, and decided to shoot him. Visualizing someone having to shoot your best animal friend is heart wrenching. Most people have been in Juniors shoes where they have a sick animal, however they never imagine having to shoot it. This comparison of being hungry and losing an animal, shows Junior’s great strength at a young age about going through poverty, and sometimes even hope...
She explains how her son was just pushed through school. “Our youngest, a world-class charmer, did litter to develop his intellectual talent but always got by” (559). He got through school by being a good kid, he was quiet and didn’t get in trouble. This was how he made it to his senior year until Mrs. Stifter’s English class. Her son sat in the back of the room talking to his friends; and when Mary told her to just move him “believing the embarrassment would get him to settle down” (559) Mrs. Stifter just told her “I don’t move seniors I flunk them” (559). This opened Mary’s eyes that her son would have to actually apply himself to pass. He wouldn’t be handed a passing grade. After the meeting with her son teacher, she told her son if you don’t try you will fail, making him actually apply himself. This made Mary understand that Failure is a form of positive teaching tool. While talking with his teacher, Mr. P, Arnold is told that he needs to go wherever there is hope. “You have to take your hope and go somewhere where other people have hope.” (Alexie 43) However, Mr. P wasn’t the only one helping Arnold. After switching from Wellpinit to Reardan, Arnold picks up some unlikely friends: Roger and Penelope. Each of them teach him something, and even keep his secret of being poor after he admits he can’t pay for going out to eat after a school dance he couldn’t even afford. “He’s not going to tell anybody. Roger likes you.” (Alexie 127) Arnold recognizes the value of these people helping him through the struggles of being the poor kid in a school dominated by students from well off families. Although he may continue to be held down by poverty, Arnold discovers that being vulnerable to friends can sometimes lead to unexpected support and people you can rely on. Arnold’s perseverance shines when he decides to attend Reardan despite its risks, and the loss of his best friend Rowdy as a result. Langston Hughes’ poem Dream is a poem based on holding onto one’s dream. The speaker of this poem is trying to convey a message to the reader that will inspire them to hold onto what they believe in, because if they don’t, "Life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly (Hughes, 3-4)." This in other words means, life will be worthless and pointless. If you give up on everything that can help you succeed or encourage you to make it to the next day, why are you living? The tone of this poem is inspirational and hopeful. For example, by the speaker is telling us how we will feel in advance to us giving up our dreams, it encourages the reader to hold on to their dreams, hope and aspiration.
