Romeo and Juliet’s Responsible Death
Many pressures and events led to the tragic death of the “star crossed” lovers, but who took the blame for disappointing death? In the story of Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet had an everlasting love. Unfortunately, Romeo was a Montague and Juliet was a Capulet. This was a problem because both parties went through an awful feud. Violence was a commonplace. When Romeo first met Juliet at a masquerade ball, he knew that he had met the girl of his dreams. He loved her and she loved him, but they knew their families would not be fond of it. “Tybalt here slain, whom Romeo’s hand did slay. Immediately, we do exile him hence.” (147-148,183-184). Since Romeo decided to execute Tybalt, he had to leave causing him to be away from Juliet. Since Romeo left Juliet, she did everything she could which eventually brought him back. But, when he came back, he thought Juliet was dead, which resulted in him killing himself. “After Romeo’s failed to make peace with Tybalt, Mercutio is slain and Romeo is unable to remain in his peaceful state.” (Dupler 8) Dupler used the phrase “unable to remain in his peaceful state” because after Tybalt was dead, Romeo wasn’t able to control his body nor his mindset. Tybalt kills Romeo’s best friend and he needed to do something about it, which caused his punishment and eventually brought him back to Verona. “That challenge leads to the deaths of Mercutio and Tybalt. That violence is the reason that Romeo is banished. His banishment leads to the risky ruse of Juliet’s death, which leads to Romeo coming to Juliet family tomb.” (Kerschen 14) Not only is Romeo responsible for his wife’s death, but for the fact that Juliet missed him so much and caused her to drink the poison to fake her death. It killed Romeo and almost Juliet. “And here he writes that he did buy a poison of an apothecary and therewithal came to this vault to die and die with Juliet.” (304-307) Romeo decided to drink the poison because he thought that Juliet was dead. Little did he know, she was alive the entire time. “At several parts, Juliet is imagined as death’s bride and just before she drinks the potion, she fantasizes about lying in the Capulet tomb surrounded by the rotting corpses of her ancestors.” (Gibson 31) Juliet is foreshadowing that she will drink the poison and eventually are later in the story. She dies because Romeo is dead. She couldn 't live without him. “He said that, just as with the poison of hate, the intensity of lovely passion plots out reason and self control and leads to destructive behavior” (Kershen 6). Kershen used destructive behavior to demonstrate that Romeo felt the need to kill himself over a girl he met not too long ago.
