Reflection is a form of thinking, it affects what we say, how we act and feel and relates to our beliefs and values (Taylor, 2010). This essay looks at the professional term ‘reflective practice’, what it is and what is the significance of developmental professional skills in reflective practice.

Throughout life, people whether consciously or unconsciously reflect on events daily. The process of reflection allows a person to take note of how they approach a situation, their thoughts, feelings during and after and what they can take from it. (Oelofsen, 2012).

In order for reflective practice to be of any benefit certain skills such as being aware of one self’s actions, been able to analyse own action’s, and been able to take criticism about actions onboard are required (Oelofsen, 2012). There are many reflective models produced to aid professionals in the process (Mann et al., 2009); Klob’s learning cycle (1984), Gibbs (1988), Johns (2004), Boud et al (1985) to name a few (Toothill, 2014).

However, through doing and allowing such skills enables the person to look at all aspects of their practice from a different perspective, learn and to change or adapt their behaviour, the next time the same or similar situation presents itself. In turn, the overall benefit of reflective practice is that the individual gains a greater sense of their actions and improves services in professional practice (Oelofsen, 2012, Taylor,
