Pursuing A Culturally Diversified Workplace

Many may question, why is it important to study intercultural communication? Why do we have to prepare ourselves for a culturally diversified working place or living environment? Why do we need to learn how to work together or live together with people of different countries or different cultures? The answer is, we have to prepare ourselves for a culturally diversified working place or living environment to be aware of others who think and speak differently from us. By doing so, less conflict would occur and everyone would have some sort of understanding of one another and thus learn from one another. Culture influences one’s views, values, and beliefs. Though finding a career that suits you best and choosing a lifelong career is rather difficult. Now in college, as I have been exploring the different courses liberal arts has to offer, I have discovered that I have a passion for teaching others. Thus, after college I hope and plan to become an English teacher. It interests me to learn how other cultures take their educational systems. South Korea would be a great cultural setting to work and live with people whose culture differs from my own. As of 2015 South Korea became the number one educational system in the world (Fair Reporters). Therefore, I would love to visit there and witness their perspective and beliefs of the education system. As well as, teach English to Korean students and share my cultural perspectives and beliefs. In South Korea, English-language instruction now begins in the third grade, so that children can start learning English in a relaxed atmosphere through conversational exchange, rather than through rote learning of grammatical rules as is still the practice in many middle and high schools (Asia Society). The Korean education system does value learning the English language. However there are differences between Korean and American culture and the different learning techniques used. My communication skills will improve and specifically will enable me to handle diverse situations such as dealing with students who have a different culture from mine. By doing so and becoming aware first, will guide me and prepare me to teach outside of my country, such as in South Korea. Growing up and living in America I have different learning styles from those who grew up and live in South Korea. For instance, South Korean teachers typically move from room to room, while the students stay in one place (Asia Society). In America, it is the complete opposite. Each teacher receives their own classroom and after each class, a bell rings to warn students to leave the class they are in and go to their next teacher in a different classroom. Additionally, a typical day for a high school student in South Korea consists of studying before school even begins. Students also continue studying throughout the day and return to the library to study or attend tutoring sessions until between 10 o’clock and midnight (Asia Society). Studying before school in America is actually common as well. In America we tend to call it “Extra Help” and the main focus is for studying and for more time with assistance on assignments.
