I studied and enjoyed many things as a consulting engineer- how to think on my feet, how to manage passionate clients, and how to pay extreme attention to detail. But, after a threat on a construction site large enough for legal action, I was felt shamed and humiliated. I was a victim of sexual harassment and I decided, on that day, I would leave engineering. I would find a profession that treats women fairly and not merely as fixtures. In the end, the strongest thing I could have done was to find a new career path.
I’m learning to expand my definition of strength- it takes many forms. It was challenging for me to leave a high paying career and go back to school. I had no real plans, but a desire to take my time and explore my options. To admit that to myself took tremendous strength.
After my experience, I woke up every morning asking myself how I was going to use my unique skills and experiences to serve women who may be facing their own inequalities. I had faith that I could bridge that gap in healthcare. I began taking classes in anatomy and physiology, and took steps to be a certified nursing assistant. I require a program where the focus is not only in the quality of the education, but serving those who do not have access to fair and respectful care. Access to healthcare is a human right, and should not be reserved for only those who can afford it. While I can’t eliminate racism or poverty, I can provide unconditional support that will keep patients healthy. I plan to do this not only through pregnancy, but through well women care as well. Midwifery is a culture of embracing differences and allowing women to show their strengths. My longterm dream and goal is to create a comfortable practice where no one is turned away for lack of funds or belittled for needing
