Nurses play a huge role in the health care system. A nurse is a bridge between doctor and patient. s/he is a compassionate, understanding and nonjudgmental yet firm and grounded. S/he is probably one of the most important yet least appreciated person in a patient’s life. When many think of a nurse they probably recognize them by a white hat and uniform. Today those white uniforms have been replaced with vividly colored scrubs worn by both male and female nurses, and many other employees in healthcare. These demands and expectations can vary from career to career. For example, RN’s are the primary point of contact between the patient and the doctor. RN’s perform patient evaluations such as monitoring vital signs, procedures such as inserting IVs, draw blood and administer medications. Where as a Head Nurse, nursing supervisor will set schedules, assign duties to the nursing staff, and make sure nurses are properly trained. Nursing supervisors must ensure supplies are well stocked and that the end-of-shift work is completed to prepare for the next team of nurses. Living in poverty my whole life with a single mom and twin brother and three younger siblings, constantly having to fight off situations that were trying to distract me from obtaining an education, being born three months premature and being diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a physical disability which I am striving successively to overcome. This past March I had the privilege to volunteer at Children’s Hospital Cerebral Palsy Adult Transition Longitudinal Study (CPAT) and they said my results were the best they had seen so far out of all the other participants because I worked hard and took on activities that I was not supposed to be able to do and loved it. The lens with which I view the world with is very different than others. I can contribute to educating others and others can educate me. Together we’ll grow in ideas, thoughts, and practices to create a more inclusive environment for our patients to thrive. Nursing is constantly evolving and changing, in order to be more efficient in providing care than in the past. The nursing profession includes professionals who are not only caregivers but support systems as well as educators. All these factors help to provide optimal care for patients and to also better serve their families and the community. All nurses are encouraged to break down the simplistic notion society has about the nursing profession because nursing is a multi-faceted profession encompassing many different factors that are beneficial to overall human development and health.
Often time, nurses has been viewed by patients, their family members and the medical team as basic emotional care givers, pill crushers or cart pullers and not as healthcare professionals who are more interesting in health promotion, disease prevention and better patient outcomes. They also often forget the emotional, physical, mental, and caring part that is involved with the profession. And to make matters worse, nurses are continued to be viewed as a threat by doctors more than ever before especially with the opening of Nurse Practitioners programs.
Although nurses do not wield the power of doctors in hospital settings, they are still able to effectively compensate for a doctor’s deficits in a variety of ways to assure patient recovery. In most aspects of life the saying “less is always more” may ring true; however when it comes to providing quality care to patients, less only creates problems which can lead to a decrease in patient’s quality of life as well as nurse’s satisfaction with their jobs. The massive shortage of nurses throughout the United States has gotten attention from some of the most prestigious schools, news media and political leaders. Nurses are being burnt out from their jobs, they are being overworked and overlooked. New nurses are not being properly trained, and old nurses are on their way to retirement.
