In the tragic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, there are multiple theories as to who was truly responsible for the deaths of the star-crossed lovers, Romeo and Juliet. Taking consideration of the details of the story, we can speculate that the ones who are to blame are Friar Laurence, the Montague and Capulet families, and Romeo and Juliet themselves.

Although Friar Laurence’s intentions were good, he influenced the death of the lovers significantly. Even though he could tell Romeo’s love for Juliet was premature, he still went on with their secret wedding (Act 2.3, 87-92). They were young and reckless. After their second real conversation addressing their families hate for each other, they decide to get married. The couple rushed into marriage when firstly, it was Juliet’s first love, she worshipped him like god and secondly, Romeo’s change of love from Rosaline to Juliet was very quick. They proclaimed their affections for each other as true love when realistically, they had met not so long ago. Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet decided to keep their love a secret from their families in fear of unacceptance. Instead of being straightforward and honest with her family about her marriage with Romeo, Juliet beats around the bush and ask Capulet to delay the marriage when he insists that she marries Paris. Another key point is that the couple did not know how to handle tough situations. Their solution for every single barrier was to kill themselves because they had a mindset that if they did not get what they wanted, life would be pointless. When Romeo receives the news of Juliet’s death, he immediately purchases poison that will kill anyone instantly. He could of chosen to not take the potion but because he was so love-sick, he was irrational. If he had waited any longer, he would have been able to see Juliet wake up from her coma state.
