The recent globalization phenomenon has been accompanied by the rise of diversity. Diversity is generally seen and argued as good and crucial in today’s world. As the general public often assumes the benefits of diversity, there is not much discussion on the thought that “is it possible that diversity is overrated?” Diversity can be seen in many different forms, it can be categorized into visible (looks) or invisible (ideas) diversity. Diversity should be valued but it becomes a problem if we are overly emphasizing on it as a society.

With globalization, many cities around the world are advertising themselves as being cosmopolitan. The championing of the idea of having diversity in their cities is good but it becomes problematic when companies are hiring people from a variety of races, ethnicity and countries just to fit the bill of being cosmopolitan. This in turn means that companies are not hiring because the person has the right qualifications but hiring them because they have the “right” appearance. This will then in turn encourage us to consider beyond ourselves and look at the different players in the society. In this instance, we often are over focused on hiring foreign expatriates into the country, thinking that they will give us a fresher perspective of the world and something new for us to look at and explore. The hiring of the expatriates simply because they are foreign trained as mentioned is worrying as it creates a weird internalization of colonial legacy that persist in the minds of some individuals today” and promoting the idea that locals are somehow inferior as compared to our foreign counterparts, such overemphasis on diversity thus does not help to create an inclusive and well-integrated
