Greg Lewis in “An Open Letter to Diversity’s Victims” advocates against the need for many languages in school programs, in American. Greg describes that those who are after what they refer to as “diversity” have been insisting that the American schools should be taught both in English and Spanish. The so called liberals base their arguments on the fact that, teaching a single language would obsolete the cultural identity of the Hispanic people. Greg’s arguments, use of quotations, tone, and mood show the need as to why single language system should be continued.
Lewis differs in thought from the other liberals. He views this differently from the other liberals and the other who are for the bilingualism. He argues for a single unifying language, Standard English. Children who don’t learn to speak English have a difficult time and moment in achieving jobs and career choices. These children would miss out on many opportunities since all of them would require them to have knowledge in English. Greg uses rhetorical question to address the reason why bilingualism is unnecessary. “How much better off would everyone involved be if the same effort had been put into teaching African-American children English as a second language?” (Cooley, 2013).
The author points out a number of factors that are key to the prosperity of the Hispanic people in America. He does not just focus on the cultural belonging part as the other liberals are claiming, but Greg puts his main focus and consideration on the future of the Hispanic people, and the prosperity of their generations to come and not just their personal short lived desires. He uses the example of an interview that would require the need for an employee with a starting salary of high twenty thousand US dollars or low thirties. He adds that the company further uses additional five thousand US dollars for training. The use of the figure makes this example vivid and convincing in the eyes of the audience that just using mere words and theoretical illusions.
Eventually, Greg speaks from the first person point of view in his speech. He refers to “I'm talking about…….” This statement is an assurance of what he is referring to. He is sure and must have been in the field and experienced the same. It is an assurance of truth. He portrays understanding and good knowledge of the subject matter of his discussion and, therefore, there is a high likelihood of gaining support in his speech from the crowd.
