Many individuals and families deal with crisis, or some type of trauma. Some of these crisis and traumas include natural disasters, PTSD, mental health crises, suicide, homelessness or any situation experience or event that produces emotional, mental, behavioral, and physical hardship or problem. During times like this, a crisis counselor may step in to aid in providing help to those in need (humanservicesedu.org, 2015).
A crisis counselor utilizes methods that offer immediate help and aid in a range of settings, such as personal homes, hospitals, centers, agencies and facilities, schools, correctional facilities through face-to-face contact as well as via local and national telephone hotlines. To obtain the proper credentials and become a crisis counselor you need to attain a bachelor’s degree in field like human service, social work, psychology, counseling, divinity, and sociology. The nationwide mean wage for a crisis intervention counselor is $41,920. (humanservicesedu.org, 2015)
After doing some research on crisis intervention counselors I could see myself doing this type of work I love to help people and I feel I work well under pressure. I know I need so much more education on dealing with crises, but I am open to learning. I think I would defiantly do better and be more affective if I settled in a specific field of crisis counseling like suicide intervention.
The crisis intervention counselor provides the individual and family the skills and knowledge to successfully navigate life’s greatest hardships and during moment of their greatest suffering.
