In the two books name Candide and Americanah, love can’t be achieved easily by Ifemelu and Candide because they must separate from their love ones and encounter on a long journey to unit with their love ones again. For instance, in the book name Candide, Candide is forced to separate from Cunegonde by being banished out of the baron’s castle for secretly kissing each other. Similarly, this happens when Ifemelu is forced to separate from Obinze to take care of Dike while Obinze has to move to London to finish pursuing his degree in college. This circumstance in both characters results them to pursue in their long journey to unite with their love again. The use of characterization and symbolism helps to establish the journey made by both the main protagonists to achieve the unity of love with Obinze and Cunegonde.

For example, in Candide, Candide sets off by meeting Cunegonde who carries the handkerchief while kissing the lady’s hands and each other’s lips behind the screen to depict the strong romantic relationship. When certain use of emotional are used by stating the relationship showed “particular vivacity, sensibility, and grace; their lips met, their eyes sparkled, their knees trembled, their hands strayed.” (Voltaire. Candide. Voltaire, 1759, pp. 5.) When these words are emphasized, they depict why the relationship is strong because they are satisfied based on their beautiful appearance. With the dropping of the handkerchief, it depicts the politeness and fidelity linked to the sex relationship and touching. However, when the Baron found out they were kissing each other secretly, he banished Candide out of the castle resulting him to pursue on the long journey to pursue for his love one. This
