In 2017, an innocent passenger named Marlin Jackson was mauled by a lab mix on a Delta flight. The dog was sitting in the lap of the man next to Jackson. Trapped by the window, Jackson was attacked in the face two times by the dog, resulting in facial wounds that required twenty-eight stitches. In the last few years, the popularity of emotional support animals continues to grow. Emotional support animals are not well-trained animals that perform tasks for those with disabilities like service dogs. They are animals that supply comfort to those that have emotional needs. Unlike service dogs, emotional support animals are given validity through letters from mental health professionals. Animals that are allowed on airplanes under the term “emotional support” are not limited to dogs. Other have brought their peacocks, cats, ducks, turkeys, and monkeys. Not to mention how tempting it is since it saves travelers an extra $125 due to the fact that emotional support animals fly free. Since the 2017 attack, there has been an increase in problems for airlines that accommodate to emotional support animals. The animals take precedence over others who are allergic to them. The flight attendants must now assist people and their animals. The animals are also the cause of arguments over people who do not want to sit next to the smelly creatures or animals that behave improperly due to a lack of training. Furthermore, people who already fear flying have the added stress of sitting near an unpredictable animal. This leads to more anxiety, especially for those who are afraid of dogs and other pets. This system is truly disgusting because now, those who have actual needs are being questioned and judged for traveling with service animals.
