According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 7.6 million companion pets enter animal shelters across the United States each year, nearly evenly disrupted between dogs and cats . These animals are abandoned for reasons including families no longer being able to care for them (sickness/death of an owner), to families not wanting them (the novelty wearing of the animal wearing off), to the animals being born into puppy mills to finally animals that are loved being lost from their owners. These animals do not understand what is happening to them and rely on the kindness of humans to provide for them in shelters until their forever home can be found. With the ultimate goal of an animal shelter is to find loving homes for animals in need of adoption or help lost animals reunite with their owners, happy endings are not always the case for animals. Of the 7.6 million companion pets who enter …show more content…
With plumbing, electrical and structural problems the atmosphere of the current shelter adds unneeded stress to animals as they try to deal with the uncertainty of shelter life. The location of Hi Tor in the Northern section of the county limits foot traffic past the shelter, the shelter is next to a minor league baseball stadium and the police and fire training center. Being located next to a baseball stadium, in a building that is unsound adds additional stress to these animals as they sit through hot summer nights with the sound of fireworks going off over their head. July 4th historically has the highest number of pet runaways, due to the animals being scared of the loud noises. Which is why a animal shelter next to a stadium that releases fireworks nearly every weekend in the summer is not conducive to the safety of these vulnerable animals, some who are in the shelter because they ran away because of
Service dogs are a low risk treatment, that can replace dangerous medication and expensive devices. For a purebred service dog is $20,000, however there are non profit organizations that provide service dogs at a much lower cost, but there is usually a long wait list (“Costs”). ASDA (Autism Service Dogs of America) sets a donation goal of $13,500 for every approved family, which is always achieved. Another option is buying the dog from a breeder and paying for the training and accessories. If a puppy is purchased from a dog breeder for around $2,500, in two years time the dog would have costed around $5,200 dollars. The rest of the $ 2,700 comes from vet bills, service gear, training expenses, food, treats, and toys. (“Service”) Getting a dog from a rescue center will cost about the same amount because usually vet bills and training expenses are incrases. However in the long run the owner is most likely to spend more money on a rescue dog, because they often have more issues, physically and mentally which cause them to wear out faster. There is no health insurance that cover service animals. Service dogs however do replace the nasty side effects of some medication, and devices that won't provide companionship. Although the average hearing aid costs $4,000, hearing aides need replaced as the person grows, and need repairs as well, putting the total
Animals are precious, loving, and sweet creatures but many are having their lives cut short. Did you know that 7.6 million animals enter shelters every year? Of those animals, thirty one percent of dogs are euthanized and forty one percent of cats are euthanized. If you do the math, that is 2.4 million dogs and 3.1 million cats. Why are we doing this to our animals? They're living creatures just like us, even if they can't tell us. As you read this paper, you'll learn about what euthanization is, learn the reasons for shelters killing our furry friends, and get an inside look at the terrible practice of euthanization.
Ideally, pet supply would be equal to the demand for wanted pets. There may never be enough caring homes for all the pets as is evident by the fact that only about 25 percent of the pets in shelters are ever adopted. F...

Having an animal can bring great joy to an individual or a family, however financial difficulties can force many families to give up their animals. The American Kennel Club (AKC) projects the average cost of owning dog at 3085 dollars for the first year. The most expensive part of raising a dog was 650 dollars going towards veterinary care (How Much Does It Cost to Raise a Dog?). For a family or individual with low income or unexpected finances these cost can be the difference between keeping an animal and giving them up to a shelter. Shelters in America are making great strides in adopting out animals, however, according to the ASPCA, there is still 7.6 million companion animals entering shelter each year (Shelter Intake and Surrender), and millions of strays living in the streets (Pet Statistics). To lower the overpopulation of pets in America, shelters need to focus on implementing preventive measures, particular low cost veterinary care programs. Low cost veterinary programs would reduce shelter and stray populations, because they reduce the cost of basic veterinary care, like vaccines and flea and tick medications, help reduce the
Anyone, who visits an animal shelter, as I do, sees an extraordinary number of beautiful, affectionate, and desperate dogs and cats. The majority of animals in any particular shelter are dogs, usually adults, for whom there aren't enough adoptive homes waiting. A few may have come from responsible breeders, whose owners do not realize that the breeder will take them back, many are those who are lost, and/or from owners who simply got tired of them. Some are pet shop puppies from a puppy mill that did not meet the owner's expectations due to health, temperament, or other reasons. A large number usually turn out to be the result of deliberate and irresponsible home breeding. These people are known as "back-yard breeders." And that is not a compliment.
Have you ever wondered, how it feels to be in a place where is overcrowded, and you are next in line to be euthanize? This is the life of the shelter animal when no one adopts them for a certain period of time. According to American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or known as ASPCA, each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized, which are 1.2 million dogs and 1.4 million cats. I am sure; most of you have some point in your life, owned a dog or a cat. Whether you are an animal lover or not, you don’t want to see innocent animals losing their lives. I personally have adopted a dog from a local shelter. There is no doubt that pet adoption from a shelter is a satisfying decision that will save innocent
I believe that dog parks are not benefitial for everyone. Although it does give dogs and owners a place to go, it also is a huge burden for the city itself. It is the owner's resposibility to find a home with space for a dog. I do not believe that a dog park will raise the property value, due to the noise and traffic congestion, as said in 'No Dog Park For Muscatine'. A dog park isn't a top priority.
Many people believe that the only way to get a pet is to “buy” one without considering adopting, which is why I believe people should consider looking up better options and become more knowledgeable. There are so many reasons why someone shouldn’t buy a pet from a breeder, and so many benefits from adopting a pet from your local shelter/animal rescue.
Ali Alhabeeb Eliza Ebro Title: Date: Dogs Adoption Adoption of dogs is becoming a popular way of getting a much-needed pet. One can adopt a dog from a rescue or a shelter. About 8-12 million animals end up in shelters or rescues in the United States every year. About 4-6 million are then euthanized.
Having recently completed 5 years of cat ownership, here's a summary of what I've been taught about cats' rights. Cats have the right to eat. And not just regularly. Cats like to eat pretty much whenever they get the chance. Although they're perfectly capable of going out to catch a mouse or a lizard if they want to feed themselves, they mostly exercise the right to be fed by you.
Garrison Graham Mr. Bergmann Sophomore English II DOGS ARE GREAT PET! Over 39% of americans own dogs to the 33% of cat owners in the united states, some dogs will eat grass to induce vomiting because they do not have a gag reflex. Dogs make a better pet than most because they are loyal to only a few people, that comes from a pack mentality. Dogs have a pack mentality from their ancestors wolves.
Cats are cute and lovable but…dogs are often called “mans best friend” and make way better pets. They also have more size options to choose from, a social hierarchy, and a more suitable ability to save people, cats and dogs. Dogs love to be around their owners, cats could care less. For example, my dog Cairo, who loves the outdoors, was once left outside on purpose. I wanted to see how he would react to being left alone. Would he run off? Would he lay down on the porch and wait for me to open it? Well, it wasn’t even a minute before I heard scratches and whining at the door. When I opened it, his tail was wagging and he was excited to see me. On the other hand, my friend’s cat, Oreo also loves to be outside, the difference is, he runs

It seems only humane that when considering getting a new pet, one would check at an animal shelter first. Not only is it less responsibility for the owner to train, but less expensive. People who adopt abused, neglected or lost animals from shelters are heroes. Please help us help the homeless pets and prevent more from becoming homeless by spaying and neutering all of your pets, by keeping an ID tag on your pets twenty-four hours a day seven days a week, by adopting rather than buying a pet and by making a commitment to keep your pet for its entire
