Conservation popular? Yes, thanks to Franklin Roosevelt, the CCC and TVA. These two groups had similar goals on very different scales. Comparing the impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is like comparing the Federal Government to a State Government. Even as early as his acceptance speech for the Presidential nomination, Franklin Roosevelt (FDR) stated “Let us use common sense and business sense. Just as one example, we know that a very hopeful and immediate means of relief, both for the unemployed and for agriculture, will come from a wide plan of the converting of many millions of acres of marginal and unused land into timberland through reforestation. There are tens of millions of acres east of the Mississippi River alone in abandoned farms, in cut-over land, now growing up in worthless brush. Why, every European Nation has a definite land policy, and has had one for generations. We have none. Having none, we face a future of soil erosion and timber famine. It is clear that economic foresight and immediate employment march hand in hand in the call for the reforestation of these vast areas. ” Roosevelt’s acceptance speech for the Presidential Nomination. During the 100 days of law, which FDR based on the writing of John Maynard Keynes, plans were drawn up for creating government agencies to help put America back to work. Roosevelt came into office on March 4, 1933 and Senate Bill S. 598 was passed by Congress on March 31, 1933 creating the CCC. Executive Order 6101 dated April 5, 1933, authorized the program, and appointed Robert Fechner of Tennessee as director. The first CCC camps, called camp Roosevelt, opened up on April 17, 1933 (Golay). These camps were mostly made up of young white men between the ages of 15-30 years old, but the program did allow both African Americans
Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X DBQ Martin Luther King and Malcolm X were both African American civil rights leaders wanting to bring freedom to black people during the 1960s. Even though both leaders wanted to liberate black people, their philosophies were drastically different. Malcolm X wanted racial separation, while Martin Luther King wanted both races to coexist. Religion is also a major part of this situation because most African Americans, including MLK in America, were Christian. Malcolm X’s goal was to turn all people who follow his path into Muslims.
The poem "La Migra" by Pat Mora carries the main idea of how power can lead to abuse. Mora shows how abuse is represented in the treatment of the Mexican woman by a border patrol agent in her poem and how this picture resembles how mankind treats animals. With the bilingual addition to Mora's poem, when the Mexican woman says, "Agua dulce, brota aqui, aqui, aqui" (lines 33-34), she is presenting the conflict of a language barrier, just like the one between animals and humans, where it is not communicated what is needed and what is unfair. Mora uses the power of language to bring her characters to life. When something is taken to the point of abuse, the actions are identical, like when the border patrol agent says, "I can touch you whenever I want but do not complain too much because I've got boots and kick" (lines 12-14). The table turns at the end, when the Mexican woman takes control of the situation with power. It does not matter how the abuse started; in the end, it is always the same---someone taking control over someone else. Abuse of power is demonstrated through "La Migr...
Imagine yourself wrongly convicted of a crime. You spent years in jail awaiting your release date. It finally comes, and when they let you out, they slap handcuffs around your wrists and tell you every single action you do. In a nutshell, that’s how the Black Codes worked. The southerners wanted control over the blacks after the Civil War, and states created their own Black Codes.
The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, or SNCC, was created on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh in April 1960. SNCC was created after a group of black college students from North Carolina A&T University refused to leave a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina where they had been denied service. This sparked a wave of other sit-ins in college towns across the South. SNCC coordinated these sit-ins across the nation, supported their leaders, and publicized their activities. SNCC sought to affirm the philosophical or religious ideal of nonviolence as the foundation of their purpose. In the violently changing political climate of the 60’s, SNCC struggled to define its purpose as it fought white oppression. Out of SNCC came some of today's black leaders, such as former Washington, D.C. mayor Marion Barry, Congressman John Lewis and NAACP chairman Julian Bond. Together with hundreds of other students, they left a lasting impact on American history.
From the play “Trifles” written by Susan Glaspell I’ll be explaining the role of the women characters and how they were portrayed in the story. The play describes setting with homicide, mystery and dishonesty among its characters. It's a play that bases on stereotypes in relationships and attitudes between men and woman at this time in our history. The male characters play the powerful leader being for example, the sheriff, deputy and the attorney where the female characters Mrs. Peter and Mrs. Hale in a kind of seen but not heard role. Who were sent out to learn more about the details of the murder of Mr. Wright, who was found hanged in his bed.
It increases the rate at which the body converts the food that you eat and the stored body fats into usable energy in the body. The 1970 film adaption of ‘this fairy tale, by Jacques Demy, called Peau d'Âne closely follows the plot of the original tale, making slight changes to the story with the addition of musical numbers, minor changes in the characters roles and choices, and the completely irrelevant addition of a scene where the king flies in for the wedding of Donkey Skin and the prince in a helicopter, completely breaking the historical illusion the rest of the movie tries to maintain. This adaption of “Donkeyskin” mocks the serious nature of incest in the fairy tale and it seemingly supports the classically patriarchal society, which makes the tale still relevant, by stereotyping the princess as the typical fairy tale princess, sweet, innocent as a babe, and stunningly beautiful, unhappy and lost until she finds her true purpose in life, which, of course, is to marry a prince and regain her status as a princess. The actress in the film fits the typical criteria for a fairy tale princess perfectly, with her flawless skin, long blonde hair, big doe eyes, and graceful, overtly feminine manner, perpetuating the image of a woman of upper class and high birth. The film makes it clear that there is a division between what is good, the uppercrust of society, and what is bad, the menial lives of the working class, by the portrayal of the princess during her time as Donkey Skin, wearing the entire skin of the donkey, with the skinned head worn on the princess’ own head as the hood of the dress/robe, rather than the skin being made into a societally acceptable dress of sorts. Despite the era in which the movie Peau d'Âne was made, it still represents the old ideals of women and as such also follows the same ideals of how women should be represented, especiall...
In the past decades the incidence of heart disease has increased, about three million people dying of cardiovascular disease in China per year (according to statistics from the Ministry of Public Health of China), which draws people’s great concern to find ways to take precautions. With the development of element analytical method, some types of chemical substances that are beneficial to cardiac health have been found. Lycopene is a very popular natural anti-oxidants found in recent years (Dai, 2011), as well as capsaicin and dietary fiber. Whilst some research focuses on the mechanism of action, little attention has been paid to usability issues, in particular to the generalization of health-giving chemical substances in ordinary meals. There is a lot of evidence that vegetables can positively contribute to prevent heart diseases, by supplying biologically active components. This article continues previous research in the field of Biochemistry and Medical Science, mainly trying to study the effective components which can prevent heart disease in edible vegetables.
Throughout the course of the existence of mankind, evolutionary processes have given rise to the innate human nature of seeking the acceptance of others. Consequently, an individual’s life consists of a persistent tug-of-war between conformity and individualism, each with their own perks and drawbacks. Conformity inspires one to sacrifice their personal desires in order to attain the acceptance of others, and individualism empowers one to pursue personal desires at the risk of being shunned by society. The play Hamlet entails of the analogous journeys of Claudius, Hamlet and Ophelia, which shed light on the struggle between one’s aspiration to be accepted and individualism. Through the crisis all of these characters are facing, William Shakespeare explores the idea of conformity and choosing to pursue one’s personal desires, and insinuates that strictly pursuing a single ideology spawns an overwhelmingly potent conflict that will eventually lead to the self-destruction of an individual.
Euphemisms are essential to today’s society. People use euphemism for multiple reasons; death in the family, cancer, or being fired. This euphemism caught my attention because I recently when through a loss to cancer. I hate when people say the big C. it’s insensitive.

Green tea is made from the plant Camellia Sinensis’s leaves without fermentation (Suzuki, Miyoshi & Isemura, 2012) and is regarded as a popular and healthy drink in Asian countries because of its health-promoting potentials such as protecting against cancer and cardiovascular disease (Harvard Health Publications, 2012; Iwasaki et al., 2014). Lots of the positive effects are due to the antioxidative activity of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) which is a major component of green tea (Suzuki et al., 2012). And it draws researchers’ interests and attentions to further investigate. According to Suzuki et al., one example of the health advantages is that catechins in green tea bring an anti-obesity effect by stimulating lipid metabolism in liver (2012).
