Conciseness, presiciseness and to the point, these are the key things to take into consideration when bringing a point across to anyone. You want someone to read your work and understand it, but to make your essay effective what really should you have? Is grammar a characteristic that your essay should have? or is it content, or is it a chronological flow? all of these characteristics is the key for opening the door to an effective academic essay. Noone should read an essay and when finished reading ask themself what have I really just read. The essay should be understandable and easy to read. It should have a gravitating effect upon the reader and portray the academic level to which you are at.

Grammar should be one of the most important characteristics of an academic essay. Imagine reading an essay with misspelt words, a exclamation mark where a question mark should be and a run on sentence upon another run on sentence with no full stops, how confused you would be after reading for awhile. Perfection is the aim but nothing done can be completely perfect, but to atleast reach the stage of 'almost perfect' flawlessness should be aimed for. It is really hard for a reader to be there trying to figure out what you were trying to say or spell when the grammar is poor. The lecturer should be able to read the things that are written in an essay and be able to distingush the level at which your academic writing is at.

In concluding three effective characteristics of an effective academic essay are Grammar, content and a good chronological flow. An essay is not an essay without these three key factors. If an individual wants to write an essay that is appealing to their readers, as well as captivating, they should consider these characteristics. No lecturer wants to sit through an essay an read pure foolishness, they want to sit and read substantial information that will grab their attention and keep them informed. As a University student the level of writing should be of an academic standard that portrays the level of writing intended for university students but inoder to achieve this level of writing no one should leave the key behind or lose it or else the door to an effective academic essay will not open.
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
The way it shaped what I was writing was that I would choose topics that I knew very well so that it made it easier for me to just write from things I new and in that way meet the requirements and so it never allowed me to take time and research or acquire new learning. I have written a five-paragraph essay for a class assignment particularly following the “Spart Write” formula. My experience with this was that I was just trying to meet certain criteria and that's all I really cared about. By having to write in such a structure manner it didn't allow me to learn new things. Based on my own experiences and on the readings, the most important characteristics of an academic student essay would be to follow some sort of structure where it doesn't allow you to wander aimlessly but not to structure that it doesn't allow you to learn or explore new ideas. The strengths in my writing are my organizational skills, grammatical construct, and my work ethic. Organizing an essay is a very natural process for me. I always follow the basic guidelines for the structure of an essay, which state that one must have an introduction, thesis statement, body, conclusion, and a works cited when needed. On this essay the main difficult I had was failure to discuss one topic statement in one paragraph. On each paragraphs there were a mix up idea that it was difficult for a reader to fully understand the main message on each paragraph. The other difficulty I had was using a proper punctuation. I have tried to address those issues with reading English punctuation resources and also from a wonderful feedback I got from my professor. Every English 111 textbook should consist of three main things: the proper way to write an academic essay, review of proper grammar, mechanics word usage and a short transition chapter of the difference between writing in high school and college writing. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter has many of the essentials but noticed it lacked examples of a noble essay. All throughout class students critiqued essays but never actually saw an example of a good, noteworthy complete essay. Having examples of what a person shouldn’t do in an essay is always beneficial but should be followed by a precise academic essay. How are the student supposed to improve their academic writing skills if they have nothing to go by? Just because the book lacks a few of the basic essentials doesn’t mean the book itself will not be beneficial in any way. The book as a whole is pleasing but still has room for revisions.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
With the modern age’s influx of new forms of communication, the skill of writing has taken a back seat for most people in their daily lives as brevity has become of greater importance. The more you can say in fewer – and often shorter – words, the better. While this is acceptable for those who have already developed the necessary motor and mental skills required to write well, it is increasingly worrisome for children who have not yet mastered these abilities, and could potentially set them back for most of their lives. Over the past semester, I have found the most challenging part of this course to simply be the transition from high school composition classes to college. Because writing expectations are so different in college than in high school, even with AP and Dual Enrollment “college level” classes, I first found myself being overwhelmed with the pressure to write the perfect first draft. The pressure came from knowing how much a final draft of a paper contributed to my grade. This left me sitting in front of my computer for hours at a time with thoughts of what I wanted to say racing through my head, but unable to deliver these thoughts into organized, structured sentences. I learned, through writing my persuasive essay, that instead of trying to write the paper start to finish and already in its perfect form, it is easier for me to look at the paper through its different components and focus on them individually, then work to best organize my ideas fluently.
