Conciseness, presiciseness and to the point, these are the key things to take into consideration when bringing a point across to anyone. You want someone to read your work and understand it, but to make your essay effective what really should you have? Is grammar a characteristic that your essay should have? or is it content, or is it a chronological flow? all of these characteristics is the key for opening the door to an effective academic essay. Noone should read an essay and when finished reading ask themself what have I really just read. The essay should be understandable and easy to read. It should have a gravitating effect upon the reader and portray the academic level to which you are at.
According to Edgar Allan Poe “A man's grammar, like Caesar's wife, should not only be pure, but above suspicion of impurity." (goodreads.com). Grammar should be one of the most important characteristics of an academic essay. Imagine reading an essay with misspelt words, a exclamation mark where a question mark should be and a run on sentence upon another run on sentence with no full stops, how confused you would be after reading for awhile. Perfection is the aim but nothing done can be completely perfect, but to atleast reach the stage of 'almost perfect' flawlessness should be aimed for. It is really hard for a reader to be there trying to figure out what you were trying to say or spell when the grammar is poor. The lecturer should be able to read the things that are written in an essay and be able to distingush the level at which your academic writing is at.

In concluding three effective characteristics of an effective academic essay are Grammar, content and a good chronological flow. An essay is not an essay without these three key factors. If an individual wants to write an essay that is appealing to their readers, as well as captivating, they should consider these characteristics. No lecturer wants to sit through an essay an read pure foolishness, they want to sit and read substantial information that will grab their attention and keep them informed. As a University student the level of writing should be of an academic standard that portrays the level of writing intended for university students but inoder to achieve this level of writing no one should leave the key behind or lose it or else the door to an effective academic essay will not open.
