Name after the Canada’s largest waterfall, the city of Niagara Falls is one of the most popular tourist attraction cities in North America. Since Niagara Falls was incorporated as a city in 1904, it has continued to grow not only in the tourism industry but also in manufacturing, retail and commercial.
Around late seventeenth, the French and British travelers, soldiers and fur traders started to settle down in Niagara Falls. During the American Revolution in 1775, Niagara Falls became “the hub” of all British and Loyalist activities; number of settlers increased rapidly which created a dangerous drain on food and other supplies ("The Chronicles of,”). After the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783 and Newark (present-day Niagara on the Lake) became the first capital of Upper Canada, the population of Niagara Falls continued to increase ("The Chronicles of,”). The demand for local goods and serviced also increased which led to the building of the very first saw and grist mill along the shore of the Niagara River.
The beginning of nineteenth century was marked with war of 1812 between the Americans and the British. The war continued for three years and finally ended on March 15th, 1815 with an unclear victory since both sides had suffered great losses in thousands of dead and wounded soldiers, and nearly all settlements across the Niagara Frontier were destroyed (“Post War of,”). This however did not stop the population of Niagara Falls from increasing to nearly one thousand and two hundred people, mostly farmed and fished for a living.
