The article that I chose is called Another Case Against GMO Foods by Timothy J. LaSalle. It was published on 2/25/14 and it is from the website http://www.foodmatters.tv/. In this article, LaSalle explains the reasons why GMO foods have been insufficient in benefiting farmers and the general public. GMO stands for “genetically modified organisms”. America started using GMOs in the early 1990s. He tells us that GMO seeds were created to make the cost of growing crops less to farmers which could lead to more crops and lower prices. It does this by making crops resistant to pathogens. It also adds herbicides which make the plants weed resistant. That way farmers don’t have to buy fertilizers. He also talks about the effects of GMOs on people’s health. There is no proven long-term effects of GMO foods. There is only speculation. GMOs are being used more and more by farmers. He believes that it is a possible cause of allergies, asthma, autism, and ADD in children and adults. He states that health concerns have increased since we started using GMOs in our food. In the last part of the article he talks about finding a way to make safer foods which would be using all organic foods. Countries in Europe, Asia and Africa have banned GMO foods. He thinks we should do the same. He also thinks we should not be able to use GMO foods until the FDA has proven they don’t cause long-term health risks. Subjective commentary The benefits of GMOs do not outweigh the risks that they impose. Some people may say that GMOs save farmers money on crops however; the cost of GMO seeds has tripled since we started using them in the 90s. This defeats one of the main purposes of GMOs. It starts out as just a few people. The CDC thinks it’s no big deal. The think it’s just some people on some sort of drug. Then all these people just start to go crazy. It starts to effect whole cities. They make riots in the streets. They start to burn down buildings. All these people start to overwhelm the police and fire departments .Cities like New York, L.A., and Chicago go into a state of emergency. Even the president doesn’t know what to do. It becomes like the zombie apocalypse. Eventually the government fails because more than half of them have been affected by this unknown disease. They realize that the only people left are ones that ate only organic foods. GMOs caused all this mayhem. If only the earlier generations had realized that GMOs were bad then all this would not have happened.

Miller first mentions how in any study a lot of scientists use animals as a way to test out theories. In this case animals were given modified food and what they found was that the food was harming the animals; they were suffering. Considering what occurred to the animals, why should we even consider trusting a modified plant? “Genetically modified foods - also called genetically engineered foods – contain DNA that scientists have modified in an unnatural way, such as by adding a gene from a different organism, according to the world Health Organization” (Miller). In this aspect no one would be willing to purchase a product like this, there should be a reason to be scared of the word GMO. Some of the make up`s are good for our economy and the plants but they cannot or should not be classified as a GMO. Miller even points out “At the event, Druker, a public interest attorney, argued that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has misrepresented the safety of genetically modified foods and violated federal food safety law by allowing them onto the market.” That right there should answer anyone’s question about GMO`s not being proven to be safe, because not every make up is suitable for our
Genetically modified food is a significant issue that America is currently dealing with; it has affected millions around the world. This assertion proves that people is eating food with Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s), nevertheless they disown the consequences of its intake. The opinions in the scientific society are divided, however recent experiments let predict the possible effects that GM Food production and consumption generates in a global scale. Genetically Modified Foods should be banned because it generates a negative impact on humans’ health, affects the environment and harms the third world nations.

If you read the paper or watch the news, you’re undoubtedly aware of the debate raging over genetically modified food. Is it bad or is it good? Between the feuding sides, you might find yourself a little lost and wondering which side is right. Answers to seemingly simple questions have been blurred or exaggerated by both sides. On one side genetically modified food is more sustainable, safe, cheaper, easier to grow and has the potential of creating disease-fighting foods. Although this is positive and good intentioned, there may be unintended consequences that we have been quick to overlook. Those opposing genetically modified food clam that it is dangerous, harms the environment, increases health risks, and causes infertility and weight gain. Even things like the declining bee population may have closer ties to modified food than previously thought. We must look to science for answers. By studying genetically modified organisms (GMOs) we can guide our decision about whether we want to be consuming them.
Genetically modified food’s, or GMOs, goal is to feed the world's malnourished and undernourished population. Exploring the positive side to GMOs paints a wondrous picture for our planet’s future, although careful steps must be taken to ensure that destruction of our ecosystems do not occur. When GMOs were first introduced into the consumer market they claimed that they would help eliminate the world’s food crisis by providing plants that produced more and were resistant to elemental impacts like droughts and bacterial contaminants, however, production isn’t the only cause for the world’s food crisis. Which is a cause for concern because the population on the earth is growing and our land and ways of agriculture will not be enough to feed everyone sufficiently. No simple solutions can be found or applied when there are so many lives involved. Those who are hungry and those who are over fed, alike, have to consider the consequences of Genetically Modified Organisms. Food should not be treated like a commodity it is a human necessity on the most basic of levels. When egos, hidden agendas, and personal gains are folded into people's food sources no one wins. As in many things of life, there is no true right way or wrong way to handle either of the arguments and so many factors are involved that a ‘simple’ solution is simply not an option.

Robin Mather, a journalist who “has passion for food and its sources, has worked at major metropolitan newspapers (the Detroit News, the Chicago Tribune)”(86), argues that GMOs have risks and hazards to human health and threats to wildlife and environment in her article “The Threats from Genetically Modified Foods”, whereas Entine, a colleague at the Genetic Literacy Project, and Wendel, a science writer(82), claim that GMOs are safe to eat and no harm to people or animals in their article “2000+Reasons Why GMOs are Safe to Eat and Environmentally Sustainable” Both articles’ authors state their ideas clearly for whether GMOs could be eaten or not. In this day and age Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have become a topic of large interest in the media. GMOs are defined as an organism whose genetic structure has been altered by incorporating a gene that will express a desirable trait (Dresbach et. al 2013). Often times these traits that are selected are either beneficial to the consumer or producer. Currently, GMOs are being created at a higher rate than ever before and are being used in the foods that we eat. This has created a large amount of debate on local, national, and international levels about the safety of genetically modified foods to human health. There are many angles that have been taken from different groups about this issue. Some believe it is harmful to our health with one source stating that, “mice eating GMO corn had fewer and smaller babies (Jagelio 2013).” Without testing on humans how are we to know these harmful effects aren’t impacting our health and reproduction. Other groups see GMOs as being both beneficial and having no impact on human health. These individuals site that , “Since GMOs were introduced into the food supply almost 20 years ago, there has not been one documented case of any health problem in humans, not even so much as a sniffle, linked to GMOs (Entine 2013).” They have also found GMOs to be beneficial to human health. Dresbach et. al(2013) found, “The biotechnology of gene splicing allows for the opportunity of creating plants that will produce food that is more nutrient dense.” With so many different views that all cite different information about GMO’s impact on human well-being, the question remains how GMOs affect human health?
Seeds of Death was created by Gary Null and Richard Polonetsky in 2012. The film goes in depth about Genetically Modified Organisms and its effects on the environment. The film mainly talks about Monsanto, which produces majority of the GMOs in the United States. Monsanto is chemical company that produce herbicides, insecticides, and GMOs. In addition, the film also talks about how GMOs are produce and what’s the reason for GMOs. This film dismantles the myths about GMOs and expose it for what it really is. Seeds of Death reveals to the public that GMOs are not only destroy our health, but also destroy the environment.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a cause of continuous debate. What would be the purpose of producing genetically altered food? Many argue that GMOs could prove to be very beneficial, the use of GMOs could lead to advances in medicine, and agriculture, and they could also prevent famine in poor underdeveloped countries. Genetic modification offers many benefits: pest control, disease resistant crops, drought resistant crops, no use of insecticides, nutritional beneficial foods, and less contamination. This is only a short list of the many benefits offered by the used of GMOs. With so many benefits why are we opposed to such a miracle? (NERC 2005)

The importance of this issue is that these GMO’s can actually have a negative effect in our society in general. It could mutate in a negative way and cause cancer or other diseases. Genetically modified food should be strictly controlled due to its various detrimental effects on the environment, human health, and potentially insect/animal effects.
