Zeus/Jupiter Zeus is the supreme of the gods, and the leader of Mount Olympus. Born into the family of Rhea, Cronus, and several siblings, he is nearly eaten by his father at birth. When Zeus grows older, he overthrows his father Cronus. Zeus is responsible for separating the three elements of the world – sea, grounds, and skies. He assigns Poseidon to the seas, and Hades to the grounds. Zeus later marries Hera, his sister. Zeus fell in love with many mortal women but would punish whoever attempted to fall in love with Hera. Zeus was once a rain god so that is why he is usually associated with weather. Zeus in literature is representative of power and leadership. Some stories say that Poseidon was not eaten by Cronus because his mother hid him among a flock of lambs and pretended that she had given birth to a colt which Zeus ate instead. Poseidon is the god of both the sea as well as earthquakes. He is known to be extremely moody and easily angered. When Poseidon is angry, he creates earthquakes and shipwrecks. For example he blinded a cyclops because his father, Odysseus had insulted him. However, when he is pleased, he creates islands and calm the waters. Sailors relied on Poseidon for safe passage and because of that they worshipped him because of his connection with navigation. A reference to Poseidon means that a character is of great power. However, the character is likely hot-tempered and difficult to soothe. A character of literature represented by Poseidon is a furious monster when angered, but a kind giver when pleased. Ariel's father, King Triton, in the Disney movie Little Mermaid is a prime example of a character easily represented by Poseidon. King Triton, like Poseidon, is aggressive and is known to have an explosive temper. When King Triton is pleased by his beloved daughter, however, he quickly loses his frightening demeanor and takes on the air of a loving father. Poseidon, is known to be represented by the trident which is always with him when he is being illustrated in art, and he’s also known for his numerous romantic relationships
