I have noticed that the kids were singing in a call and response pattern, where the leader sings a line and the other kids chants along repeatedly. It was really difficult to find who the leader of the group was, but the leader’s has very clear projection and energetic voice. This is related to what we have experienced with Ysaye Barnwell in many ways; First, we learnt the lyrics of the song through call and response, then we kept on repeating the lines over and over again. Second, she then added complex rhythmic patterns and movements just like the kids when they repeated the lines and starting jumping up and down together. I have noticed that the pitch level is mainly in the higher register and they sang together in unison. The quality of
They sound soft and gentle as they are singing in a major key and harmony with each other. This creates a positive, calm and peaceful atmosphere for the audience. Gradually a sound appears in the background of the song. It is a man reading the news but it’s very quiet and drowned out by the silent night melody. His voice is in monotone and has no emotion in it.
Patricia Young’s poem Boys is a representation of implied heteronormacy in society. Young uses tropes and schemes such as allusion, metaphors and irony to convey the ways in which heterosexuality is pushed onto children from a young age. Poetry such as Boys is a common and effective medium to draw attention to the way society produces heteronormativity through gendered discourses that are typically used to understand sex. Boys does an excellent job at drawing its readers to the conclusion that it is an ironic poem trying to emphasize the over-excessive ways in which we express heterosexuality in daily life.
“Silence is a sounding thing, to one who listens hungrily.” Gwendolyn B. Bennett was an author, journalist, educator, and artists. She was a woman of the Harlem Renaissance. But despite all the struggles of being an African American woman, Gwendolyn B. Bennett made herself into the woman she was in the 1900s. Therefore, the strong woman she became is shown through her work.
was found guilty and hanged (Dieters, 2012). Seven years later, Fitzpatrick’s former roommate confessed to the murder on his deathbed. Residents of Detroit were outraged that an innocent man had been put to death. Then, two years following Fitzpatrick’s execution, another Detroit resident, Stephen Simmons, was tried and convicted of killing his pregnant wife during a drunken rage. His execution was made into an event resembling a carnival, complete with a band, local merchants selling their goods, and a seating section for spectators.. When asked if he had any last words, Simmons recited a poem. His “appeal to the heavens” shocked witnesses. The execution was called “cruel and vindictive” by onlookers. The result of these two cases was an
The death camp was a terrible place where people where killed. Hitler is who created the death camp for Jews. The death camp was used for extermination on Jews. This occurred on 1939 – 1945. The death camps were in the country of Europe. Hitler did all this because he didn’t like Jews and the religions. The book Night is a autobiography written by Elie Wiesel. The poem called First they came for the communist written by Martin Neimoller is a autobiography.
The collection about Thomas and Beulah was my favorite of the three that we read. I really enjoyed reading the poems about there relationship and trying to understand the dynamics within it. After reading it and giving it some thought, I believe that Thomas and Beulah had a marriage full of love. However I also believe that they lacked something else very important to any relationships especially marriage, respect. I do not think that this was a conscious or deliberate choice made by either I just think that after years of being together they lost sight of what was really important.

“Death is like a flower growing in a patch of weeds. Even where there is bad/evil the end will be beautiful.” The simile I wrote means that every person is going to through a hard time in their life but no matter how hard or awful it is you will end in a beautiful place called Haven. While reading William Cullen Bryant’s poem I came to the conclusion that we have somewhat of the same views. In his poem he says, “unnoticed by the living—and no friend.” I believe that he was trying to have people comprehend that even if you are unnoticed and have no friends that doesn’t change where you’ll end up in life. Today people romanticize a large number of things one being models. People romanticize models by wanting to be them and look
Call and Response is a style of singing that was utilized by slaves under the watchful eye of an overseer. The West African culture traditionally used this style of singing in public gatherings and religious rituals (Wikipedia).
Robert Creeley, a famous American poet, lived from 1926 to 2005. Creeley was normally associated as a Black Mountain poet because that is where he taught, and spent most of his career. Throughout his life, Creeley wrote many different pieces of poetry. Four great poems by Robert Creeley are, “For Love”, “Oh No”, “The Mirror”, and “The Rain”. The poem “For Love”,was written by Creeley for his wife. In this poem Creeley explains, the love someone has for another person, and how complicated it is making his life because the person doesn’t know how to explain their love. “Oh No” is a poem that is literally about a selfish person who ended up in hell, but this poem has a deeper meaning. Part
During this performance I observed that this music is very string-based since they only play string instruments. Through the songs the bass and guitar create the rhythm instead of drums. During most of
The ones in the group from Papa New Guinea and the ones from the Philippines had different accents than each other, but when they all sang together, it blended perfectly. That is definitely not something I hear every day, and it was quite
Both sexes would sing, even the little children. A key part in keeping their identity so strong is that the parents are strict about teaching their children the music and dance. Their lyrics tell stories about horrible times and hope for freedom in the end. These styles of music create a kind of passion and thrive to continue. Their music kept them alive.
In comparison to other songs the tempo or speed of the song is relatively slow. There are not too many notes within the songs itself, which can portray a calmer effect then a song with more notes in it. As a person, I tend to enjoy some calm songs so What Child is This appealed to me as a person. The next item that appealed to me was the vibrato within it. Vibrato, a violin technique, can be used to make the piece of music sound more natural.
In the 1920’s and 1930’s, Edward Estlin Cummings came up with an innovated and unique way of creating poetry. Although, many poets had created their own rules, Cummings broke all those classic rules and did what no one else had done before. He was a painter as well as poet and used both of his talents to create new poetry. The way Cummings exposes his poems help the reader to distinguish his attitude and go deeper into what he’s trying to say.
