Youth Culture leads to moral decay

According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), when a child matures into adulthood, they are considered as youth. Youth undergo psychological and physiological changes that occurs throughout the different period of adolescence and post-adolescence where it usually happens at puberty and ends when one is about 20 years old (Fornäs, 1994, p. 3). Youth is the period where young people would form significant characteristics that leads to a better understanding of themselves that would last through their life span (Willis as cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5). As an illustration, Hebdige, (as cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5) did a research on how the different subculture uses symbols to signify their loyalty to the group in the sense of dressing, hairstyles, make-up and material embellishment like motorbikes. Frith (as cited in Siân, 2012, p. 5) suggests that how one lead their life fully based on definite values and purpose that are exclusive to those young people who are experiencing them are in line with the definition of youth culture. Subsequently, Siân (2012), believes that youth are unstable in their teenage years. With youth culture, young people have a great avenue for them to convey their feelings through exploring the different cultural outlets. Secondly, it allows youth to have a sense of belonging and purpose if they could not find it in other social structures like school, family and home. To conclude, youth culture can bring about either moral values or moral decline. I am incline towards thinking that youth culture brings about moral decay in youth. They are primarily shaped by mass media, followed by peer pressure.
