A generation filled and saturated with an image has become misleading to how we look and judge others. The media has been the growing source of false material for the younger generation that has mislead them in ways but can be useful in others. We tend to place a certain stereotype on the two genders, male and female, both in which have their very own controversial sides in which they can take. In our modern society there are many controversial things that are portrayed towards each sex. From the way they should look, act etc. Although the media can have some positive effects for the younger male generation, my focus will be on the way media affects male’s lifestyle and how they take on roles the media forces upon them in some negative ways. …show more content…
These platforms can cause many problems for the growing generations as they completely surround themselves around the media. They learn from these platforms that have grown and learn from others of the ways that they can change themselves completely. With social media blowing up within the past decade, our generation has been a witness to the change and cultural shock our country goes into. Indeed, fashion is on factor that can have a negative shock to those who don’t follow or even use it. Being a youth in the Texas Independent School District it became mandatory for junior high students to wear uniforms. I have no clue if this rule was forced on any other part of Texas besides the Odessa/Midland area but that’s not the point. From a young age we are being to be taught that we should look the same because if we looked different than their would-be problems throughout our years of the beginning adolescence stage. Not really having the choice to wear anything but the bland school color they note as the “school spirit.” Now I know this is for all students nor just male or female but to understand my point, it was established on us at a younger age. “Why do we have to wear uniforms?” Many of us would ask, and the same answers would rise, and the staff would simply cover the fact they make us buy a whole new wardrobe for just a year. Having to write an essay of the positive and negative effects of …show more content…
As young boys grow, they are taught to be tough in an emotional way and hold in feelings they may have. Never to show who they truly are to someone because in that case they gain the ledge over you. Young men are always looking for the ways in which they can seem tough and do all that is necessary to do so. As we grow is it not hard to be someone that you simply do not want to become. Now as we grow with the ego of being tough and stable as can be, we now face the media with the image that we need to be physically tough as well. Not only may we have to be tough on the inside to keep our family proud of the young man that we are becoming but we need to look the part as well. As the media is growing in fitness, it has become one of the biggest things is hitting our time today. As being fit makes you more attractive and has become the grounds for living a better life indeed. As if you are not fit then you are not doing so well. Media making it seem as if you need to be fit to be happy and not to just to be yourself. Wolf says, “I forced myself to keep my own figure fictitious; legendary.” (P 86) As it has become forceful in a sense to completely change who we are to be the person others want us to be. This statement really is something to the men that grow holding in things at all cost just to stay face. As the media grows it changes men into
Gender role conflicts constantly place a role in our everyday life. For many years we have been living in a society where depending on our sexuality, we are judged and expected to behave and act certain way to fulfill the society’s gender stereotypes. The day we are born we are labeled as either a girl or boy and society identifies kids by what color they wear, pink is for girls and blue is for boys. Frequently, we heard the nurses in the Maternity facility saying things like, “Oh is a strong boy or is beautiful fragile princess.” Yet, not only in hospitals we heard this types of comments but we also see it on the media…
In the society we live in, gender plays a great role, is not biological rader it’s refereed to as a social behavior pattern. It is constructed on male and female character and traditional beliefs. The society has often reflected its passion on gender roles. For instance In the media today women are given roles that suit men which makes them challenge men for their right, they are represented as entertainment for men, women are likely to be the source of leading news stories nowadays.
Gender is not based on the sex of a person, but the cultural norms of that society. Gender roles are based on the norms and standards in different societies (Flores 2012). Each societies has their own set of social norms, and the identities that fit those norms. In the United States masculine roles are associated with strength, dominance, and aggression. Women in the US are expected to be more passive, nurturing and subordinate (Flores 2012). Gender roles not only assign traits to men and women they affect the way men and women are supposed to think and act. Women are held to a different set of rules than men are. For a woman to show anger in public is highly stigmatized, and looked down upon. When a man does it it's considered normal. When women are in the media they are given a different set of g...
Boys are influenced by many of their coaches in life; brothers and fathers telling them they must be tough and show no pain, teachers who expect them to work hard at everything they do, and in the back of their minds are their mothers who worry about them over extending and getting hurt. Kimmel asked a few men in their 20’s, “where do young men get these ideas” (the Guy Code), they all gave the same answers: their brothers, fathers, and coaches. One mentioned that his father would always be riding him, telling him that he must be tough to make it in this world, another said his brothers were always ragging on him, calling him a “pussy” because he didn’t want to go outside and play football with them. He just wanted to stay in and play Xbox. Yet another said that whenever he got hurt his coach would mock and make fun of him because he was showing his feelings. The world is a very competitive for men, they believe they must always prove themselves to other men. Men get pressured into doing things they don’t want to do. Men shouldn’t be pressured they should be able to do what they want to
On a daily basis people are exposed to some sort of misrepresentation of gender; in the things individuals watch, and often the things that are purchased. Women are often the main target of this misrepresentation. “Women still experience actual prejudice and discrimination in terms of unequal treatment, unequal pay, and unequal value in real life, then so too do these themes continue to occur in media portraits.”(Byerly, Carolyn, Ross 35) The media has become so perverted, in especially the way it represents women, that a females can be handled and controlled by men, the individual man may not personally feel this way, but that is how men are characterized in American media. Some may say it doesn’t matter because media isn’t real life, but people are influenced by everything around them, surroundings that are part of daily routine start to change an individual’s perspective.
One of the greatest controversies that is spreading throughout high schools in the United States is parents and their children against the enforcement of their school’s uniform policy. More schools have been adopting uniform policies within the past decade. Rules contained in the policy that are implemented range from wearing certain types of tops (shirts) in specified colors to students being required to tuck in their shirts. In the past, uniforms were exclusively for students who attended private schools because they were “well-off”, but now uniforms are being seen more frequently in public schools on students of all economic levels. Having gone through a school system that considered adopting a uniform policy, I would have to press
Just as women face pressures to be extremely thin in order to be considered beautiful, men face pressures to be strong and muscular in order to be considered attractive. Like women, men that do not fit this ideal body type are often looked down upon. This forces men to adapt their lifestyles in an attempt to strive for this ideal, and this forced conforming could be seen as men being caught in a Western harem. Additionally, Mernissi explains that women are supposed to act childish and silly, citing German philosopher Kant who believes that women who pursue education should be considered ugly. Conversely, men are expected to act tough, hyper-masculine, and rugged.
The Representation of Men and Women in the Media Men and women are both represented differently in the media these days. Then the sand was sunk. Ironically it was even represented differently in the title of this essay. Men came before women! I am writing an essay to explain how men and women are represented in the media.
Women – beautiful, strong matriarchal forces that drive and define a portion of the society in which we live – are poised and confident individuals who embody the essence of determination, ambition, beauty, and character. Incomprehensible and extraordinary, women are persons who possess an immense amount of depth, culture, and sophistication. Society’s incapability of understanding the frame of mind and diversity that exists within the female population has created a need to condemn the method in which women think and feel, therefore causing the rise of “male-over-female” domination – sexism. Sexism is society’s most common form of discrimination; the need to have gender based separation reveals our culture’s reluctance to embrace new ideas, people, and concepts. This is common in various aspects of human life – jobs, households, sports, and the most widespread – the media. In the media, sexism is revealed through the various submissive, sometimes foolish, and powerless roles played by female models; because of these roles women have become overlooked, ignored, disregarded – easy to look at, but so hard to see.
Body image for women has always been stressed for them to look a certain way and to try obtain “physical perfec...
From the youngest age I can remember, everything I had seen in the media, altered my perception on gender - what it was, what it meant, and what society saw as fit. Gender has often been confused with having to do with biology, when in fact, gender is a social construct. In today’s society, gender has mixed up the construction of masculinity and femininity. This plays an important role in many individuals lives because they define themselves through gender over other identities such as sexual, ethnic, or social class. Identity is shaped by everyday communications, such as what we see through the media, therefore as society continues to evolve, so does the way we perceive identities and select our own.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
The gender issues in today’s society are issues to discuss because they are tainting the lives of people from an early age. This is important because girls and boys are showing increasing levels of insecurities that are arising due to fundamental gender issues in society. The masculine stereotype is one the most prevailing causes of gender issues in society, especially the issue of sexism. Our society must address this issue because the cycle of sexism only feeds into peoples’ insecurities. Men should not feel obligated to objectify women to feel masculine and women should not feel like they must be sensual and beautiful to have value. The stereotypes that are being placed on men and young boys effect the attitudes of the women around them and creates a cycle of hypersexualization and sexism, leaving the relationships between genders tainted and women feeling less confident in themselves. By changing the way people think men and women are supposed to be, we can change the way our society values one another and in turn, become a more equal and respectful society.
Mass media, including TV, radio, newspapers have a great influence on people and especially on the younger generation. It plays an important role in shaping the opinions and position of the younger generation. In the present, the younger generations are influenced by mass media, including TV, radio, and newspapers. They think this is the model for them because in daily life it is necessary for everyone, therefore, it is not unusual that it has a great influence on the people and especially on them. It plays an important role in shaping the opinions and position of the younger generation. The younger imitate the mass media and it has an impact on the younger on they way they dress, speak or behave.
Social media and the internet has become apart of the culture of this generation. Many people turn to social media for various reasons such as news, networking, games, and other time wasting activities. Social media and the internet has affected the development of people of our generation by contributing to less social interactions, strengthening communication skills, and online harassment.
