According to the book “You May Ask Yourself” by Dalton Conley, Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson have conducted a research about education during the 1960’s. The researchers went to an elementary school and provided the elementary school students an intelligent quotient test. They then picked one fifth at random, of those students that took the test, and told their teachers that they were “bright” students. They did not look at the results of the exams but just picked them at random. The students took the intelligent quotient test at the end of the school year again. The results of the second intelligent test for the one fifth of the students that were chosen at random before was higher both then their first test

Some people work hard their whole life to achieve success and others just seem to be born talented in a certain field that they prevail in. One of the ways an individual can attempt to become successful is by working diligently in school to obtain a proper education. Access to advanced education is key if you would want to become very intelligent and furthermore the so called “gifted programs” in these advanced education systems are supposed to make you even smarter.People have wondered if going through gifted programs would make you more successful in your adult life.There was a man named Richard Terman, who wanted to take a group of kids in these gifted programs, his “Termites”, and track how successful they were later in life. He was hoping to find that the kids that were in advanced classes would in fact become very successful adults and he was right. When his Termites were adults many of them became experts in different fields. In his book, Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell makes the claim that IQ does not have an accurate correlation to success after a certain point. Specifically, he says, “The relationship between success and IQ works only up to a point. Once someone has reached an IQ of somewhere around 120, having additional IQ points doesn’t seem to translate into any measurable real-world advantage.” IQ tests and other talent assessments have long been used to enroll students in gifted education initiatives. It has been argued that not only are IQ tests inaccurate, but gifted programs are detrimental to a child’s education. While I concede that IQ tests are not the best way to determine intelligence, I still insist that gifted programs are beneficial for children that show a special aptitude in different school subjects. Without advanced programs to challenge children with unique abilities, these students are unable to reach their full potential.

After reading the article, “The Myth of ‘I’m Bad at Math’” I began to think about my past learning experiences and realized that my opinions on this subject have changed drastically over the years. For the most part, I felt like this article made a lot of good points, especially considering my own experience with believing in incremental vs. fixed intelligence. Basically from the beginning of my schooling I was taught to think that some kids were just smarter than others, and that that couldn’t necessarily be changed. I think this had a lot to do with the fact that I was considered a “smart” kid: I caught onto most learning concepts easily, so people told me that I was “smarter” than other kids. If I had been a child who learned a different way, I think that I would have been taught to believe in the incremental model of intelligence very early on as to not discourage me from growing as a learner (which was exactly what teaching kids that
Some students simply do not test well, others try their hardest and still cannot reach the impracticable standards set for them. The individuals who create these tests do not understand the pressures of being a student, or the struggle to answer thirty-five questions in a compressed time period. One test cannot accurately measure the intelligence of a student.
Results of students who received praise for intelligence: The students in this category had negative results after receiving praising. When asked afterwards if they wanted to do the same level of problems or try more challenging ones, they chose the task that would allow them to look smart and do well on. Consequently, while telling a child how smart he or she is, we are sending a message to not take risks and just look the part. Afterwards, these children were given a hard task, which they performed poorly on, and they know longer liked the problems and did not want to practice them at home. Children also felt “dumb” and when given the initial task (in which they did well), they performed significantly worse. Lastly, their opinions of intelligence reflected that it was an innate capacity as though you cannot improve.
Standardized tests have been used to see how much a child has learned over a certain period of time. These tests have been a highly debated issue with many parents and just people in general. In the article “Opting out of standardized tests? Wrong answer,” the author Michelle Rhee argues that people should not be trying to opt out of standardized tests because it allows the country to see how much a child has learned and the things they need to improve. On the other hand, in the article “Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools Is Wrong,” the author Kristina Rizga argues that standardized tests are not an efficient way to measure a student’s intelligence. I never felt that my intelligence was tested in school until I was in the tenth grade. Throughout my schooling I had coasted by receiving “A’s” and “B’s”, yet never standing out amongst my peers. I was never challenged by anything educational related. In my sophomore year of high school I decided to take AP World History. It was set to be my first AP course I had ever taken. I chose the course like a sheep following the herd that was my intelligent peers. My time in the class was very turbulent. Through ups and downs I was able to reflect and gained knowledge about my own character and education.
It is a fact that some people are better at taking tests than other people. Intelligent students who challenge themselves throughout their high school careers and have high grade point averages can do poorly on a test, while a student who has only taken basic level classes can score significantly higher. However, some argue that genetics and nature are more linked to intelligence than environment. One of these people is Arthur Jenson, an American psychologist who concluded that intelligence was mainly hereditary by finding a significant gap between the average I.Q. scores of colored and white people (McLeod). Although this experiment has dignity, it can not be proven that intelligence has nothing to do with the environment where these skills are brought forth. More specifically, if one person is more motivated to learn and is in an environment where learning is encouraged, they will be more intelligent than one who is not motivated or equipped to learn efficiently and become intelligent. In fact, in a study conducted by F. N. Freeman, K. J. Holzinger, and H. H. Newman of the University of Oxford in 1937, average I.Q. scores of identical twins raised together in the same environment had a .88 correlation coefficient, whereas identical twins raised in different environments had a .77 correlation coefficient (“Effects of Hereditary and Environment on individual Differences"). This is clear evidence that the environment that one is exposed to has a greater effect on intelligence than natural
On the ‘nature’ side of the debate is the psychometric approach, considered to be the most dominant in the study of intelligence, which “inspired the most research and attracted the most attention” (Neisser et al. 1996, p. 77). It argues that there is one general (‘g’) factor which accounts for intelligence. In the 1880s, Francis Galton conducted many tests (measuring reaction times to cognitive tasks), (Boundless 2013), in order to scientifically measure intelligence. These tests were linked to the eugenic breeding programme, which aimed to eliminate biologically inferior people from society. Galton believed that as intelligence was inherited, social class or position were significant indicators of intelligence. If an individual was of high social standing, they would be more intelligent than those of a lower position. However he failed to show any consistency across the tests for this hypothesis, weakening his theory that social class correlated with intelligence.
