Our tenth grade English class just recently received our Pre ACT test scores. As part of going over them and what they mean, we have been looking at future occupations and the schooling that goes along with them. We are being told to look more into our futures and to start thinking about what colleges or universities we want to attend and what we might major in. I researched the qualifications needed and recommended for being an author.
For this occupation, an author would write about topics that interest them and others. They may have to conduct research about that specific topic if they are not too well versed on it. An author needs to be able to organize facts and ideas as well as develop themes, characterization, and setting. Authors require

a certain set of skills: to be original, solve problems, consider new ideas about a topic, manage time, and to understand how and why people react the way that they do. These are all important as an author typically works on their own schedule. It is up to the author to make sure they meet their deadline and to write the novel that they enjoy and are proud of. Many authors have other jobs along with their writing careers, as it is very difficult to become popular enough to make a living off of writing alone. An author’s wage is dependent almost entirely on how well their book sells. Though, it is quite common to receive an advance when you sell your first book to a publisher. The average advance is around $5,920. After that advance, an author’s wage is typically up to the public and how well their book sells, though it also depends on the publishing company and what their contract states. The employment in this field is large, around 3,441 and it is expected to have a growth of 2.6%, with annual openings of 70. The University of Nebraska, Omaha offers a program of study in English Literature and Writing.
The school is located in Omaha, Nebraska and has a student body of roughly fifteen- thousand. Out of state tuition is $16,632 a year and rooming costs are estimated to be $8,408. The application fee is $45. This school only requires you to have a high school degree to attend. For Jackson County Central High School that means you would need to have four years of English and three years of math, history, and science. The average ACT score for students accepted into this schools is 18-29. This school offers a major in Creative Writing as well as English Composition and Writing. They offer a Bachelor’s,Master’s and other advanced degrees for the broader category, English Literature and Writing.

The cost for dorms is listed as $10,612 and tuition is $31,420, with an application fee of $35. This university, like the University of Nebraska, Omaha, only requires an high school degree to attend, no specific classes. The average ACT score of students accepted is the same as the Nebraska school, between 18-29. This university offers a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or other advanced degrees for their English Language and Writing
major. I interviewed Chris Koehne about his career in food sales. He had decided to go into food sales after working in restaurants since high school. He had started his own restaurant in Jackson, Minnesota. He did not make much money and decided to go into sales instead. He enjoys that he is able to work on his own and that he can give insight to others who are running a restaurant. He had some food service background before going into food sales. He had gone to college for a different major, and ended up dropping out before receiving his degree. His advice for a high school student thinking about their future is to attend a college and study as much as you can in high school. I learned from this interview that you might not always use the degree you may receive in college. My class has spent nearly two weeks on this project, one week researching and four days to write the paper. I have learned quite a bit, as I am sure they all did as well. I learned the education I should receive to be successful as an author. I also learned that colleges will commonly have a program in literature of some sort. This project helped to bring the costs of universities to my attention, allowing me to start thinking about that as well as considering what I will major in and where I want to go. It taught me that many schools will raise the tuition for out-of-state students, though some states have a reciprocity agreement with others so that you can attend at an in-state tuition price. Lastly, this project has taught me that the harder I work in high school, the more likely I am to get into a good school and I will have more scholarships available to me.

Writing as an author requires a deep understanding of the English language as well as the literary devices involved and the effective use of them. Compare this profession to the former one, and the differences in the amount of skill needed are obvious. Counting and separating tags is a job requires little skill, and can easily picked up by anyone. However, a career writing at an author’s level requires a great amount of skill that many do not possess. Another example would be in Thomas Carlyle’s essay, Labour, where he mentions that those with skill would be rewarded, proven by, “the knowledge [skill] that will hold good in
Transitioning from high school to college can be overwhelming. Before English 1301, I thought that I did not have to worry about being prepared for college. I quickly realized that my little background in writing essays was not going to be enough for college. Writing is not just something that I will use in English classes. In college, I will have to use effective writing skills in all my classes to complete research papers, essay tests and communicate to professors. Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be something that did not come easy to me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to get my thoughts down on paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of writing that was required ended up helping me in so many ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me so much for college and real life.
From the time a child enters preschool, teachers begin asking a common question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” That dreaded query has always haunted me, mostly because the way it was redundantly asked put a ton of pressure on me and my peers. The question was like a rusty nail being hammered into our head’s by society. I continuously had the cliché answers of becoming a doctor, teacher, or a police officer, but with serious reservations. After years of not having a clue, I started to think about what I like to do after the stresses of work and school were gone at the end of the day.
Unfortunately, my family and I fall into an area of the middle class that prohibits us from receiving need-based aid. Although I have graciously been awarded the Elizabeth Ann Seton Scholarship, without some additional form of aid, a Seton Hill education may be prohibitively expensive. My fourth year’s tuition alone would cost $37,520 with my current scholarship, and I would still have to pay for living expenses. Once my undergraduate and fifth years’ expenses are included, I will be over $150,000 in debt when I graduate. As a student who has worked exceedingly hard in the classroom and as a leader for four years, this amount of financial burden feels like a punishment. If I do not receive the Seton Scholar Award, I am not confident that I can attend Seton Hill and make the impacts I have described in this
The very first chapter we read of Mindful Writing changed my perspective to see that anyone and everyone can be a writer. Brian Jackson, the author of Mindful Writing, wrote, “In this book I want to convince you that anyone writing anything for any reason is a writer…Writing is not something we do just in school. It is a vital means of influence in all facets of life.” It was through that very first reading that I began to think about writing as more than just a dreaded part of school, and I began to think of myself as more than just a student forced to write. Our very first assignment, My Writing Story, helped me to reflect on my identity as a writer. I realized that I was a writer every time I wrote in my journal or captioned an Instagram post. Throughout the semester, as I came to love writing more with each paper I wrote, I was able to create my identity as a writer. I learned that I loved research and analyzing others’ thoughts and ideas, but that writing simply on my own opinions, wasn’t my favorite past time. Through the countless readings this semester, I saw which writing styles I loved and which didn’t speak to me. Each day of class, I chipped away at creating my identity as a writer, and I’m grateful for the lessons that helped me shape and realize that
Understanding how to write within a particular profession is an essential tool needed to excel professionally and ultimately, have articles published. However, a question must, first, arise and be addressed before any writing takes place. Denise K. Comer, author of Writing in Transit, states, “Disciplines are in many ways defined by questions” (39). Questions are the basic tool used to perform research projects which lead to written and published articles. Without questions, we, as the human race, would be uninformed or mislead.

The University of Chicago is best known for is school of medicine, which is very compelling to me. The tuition is about $44,178 per year. And the meal plan plus housing is about $14,715 a year. Totally roughly $58,893 a year. The University does offer financial aid to students . The University of Chicago offers division one sports. They offer two sports that i found interesting, Women’s tennis and track and field. The atmosphere of the school is both scholarly and challenging. The University of Chicago compares well to my ideal college.
Writing can be very frustrating; laying your ideas out on paper so that others can grasp the concept you are trying to convey is a very difficult task. In Writing 101 I have learned how to formulate good theses that are arguable and also how to validate articles that have to do with my topic. The most important element of a paper is the thesis statement. It captures the reader's attention and tells them what the essay is about. Having a well-structured thesis along with evidence to support that thesis are the main ingredients to a well-written essay. I have also learned how important it is to research an author’s background to ensure their credibility. This is a very important step in writing because today we can find information on a topic, however, it is not valid. By researching the author, we can see if he or she is an expert in the area and so this would make his or her information more credible. There is a ...
It is just the beginning but I like the class already because I love to write. Although, these may seem not seem like goals to others but they are my short term goals and no matter the obstacles that come in my way I am going to try my hardest to complete them. For the time that I started college some people would say that I am behind but I say it doesn’t matter when you graduate as long as you graduate. Although, I just change to a double major so I am not going to graduate anytime soon. My long term goals are to be a successful woman entrepreneurs. Being in college can be a long process but I feel like I can obtain that quicker than anything else I truly want. Once I graduate with a career opportunity job I can start taking the steps toward my long term

Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre-elementary to college, I’ve managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I’ll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes.
What will I do for the rest of my life? Every person asks this question at some stage of their life, usually during their later teenage years. As a high school junior, I am now asking myself this question. After considerable thought, I have devised a tentative plan for my future. I realize that some of these plans and goals may change over time, but with a plan, the first steps of the journey can begin. To prepare me for the journey, I have taken very challenging high school curriculum, such as Honors and Advanced Placement courses. These classes will not only assist in my admission to college, but have also helped me to develop strong study skills and time management.
