To Read or To Watch?
Jeannette Winterson states in her essay, Writer, Reader, Words, "the enjoyment got out of literature is not the enjoyment to be had from a ball game or a video" (Winterson,34). As stated, we live in an era that progresses daily through the technological advancements. Consequently, more and more people are preferring the convenient and concise information that is being offered through the newer technologies rather than the old-fashioned hard copy books. This is a tragedy concerning the fact that books have been around since the early days of civilization and have been giving secondhand experience to readers through text. Thus, we must embrace the traditional hard cover books.
To start off, the main difference between books and modern technology of information is the connection between the audience and author. Winterson says, "The general reader need not sit down and ponder the runes behind the words, but if he or she wants the pleasure out of a book that cannot be got out of anything else, that reader has forged a link with the writer" (Winterson,34). Accordingly, books create a special bond between the reader and the writer that cannot be had between modern technologies and its audiences. Nowadays, large corporations such as Amazon have created ways to preserve the bond between the writer and the reader through digital books. However, the bond given from the feeling of ink running through one's hand and the feeling of ecstasy when one glides through an important text with a highlighter does not compare to the technology offered through digital books.

Soccer is not only a sport to most people. It is a passionate yet diplomatic event that evokes emotional feelings. To exemplify, a match between South Korea and North Korea caused a diplomatic disaster. North Korea refused to let the South Korean players to display their flag or sing the national anthem during the game in North Korea. Consequently, FIFA (The International Federation of Association Football) had to step in and move the game all the way to China.

a.) pros and cons of books and entertainment. Comparing them.
b.) An analysis of the change from romanticism to Realism and compare it to sports. Soccer specifically. How old soccer has changed and turned into modern soccer.
In a world dominated by technology, reading novels has become dull. Instead of immersing into books, we choose to listen to Justin Bieber’s new songs and to scroll through Instagram posts. We have come to completely neglect the simple pleasures of flipping through pages and getting to finally finish a story. Sherman Alexie and Stephan King’s essays attempt to revive this interest in books that has long been lost. They remind us of the important role that reading plays in our daily lives. “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me,” for instance, demonstrates how being literate saved the narrator from the oppressive nature of society. The author explains that even though he was capable of reading complex books at an astonishingly young
This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. By displaying a series of graphs, as well as including multiple data sets, the text explains how e-books compare with printed texts; then, analysis of these facts is also included to show the reader the authors’ point.

It is very easy to agree with Moebius statement that ‘good’ picture books contain some form of invisible and intangible concepts that keeps the reader returning. In Voices in the Park it is very easy to see Moebius idea due to the ability of technology to create detailed and complex books. In contrast, Potter has produced a book that more subtle in showing this relying not on technology like Voices in the Park but working within severe limitations. Blending page turns, text, colour to create understandable concepts. Goodman comments that some would argue that these elements in pictures interfere with and detract from the text, and thus undermine the confidence of the reader. An extrapolation of this idea is that preconceived ideas and pictures of another spoil the reader’s entrance to literacy.
First, he provides an overview of the history and development of the book as well as the development of reading. Carr analyzes and explains the effects of these developments on the individuals. Furthermore, he notes that the Internet recreates and alters a medium’s content by the use of hyperlinks, which ultimately distracts readers, and by separating the content into organized chunks. These characteristics make the content “searchable” which stimulates skimming behavior or superficial reading. As a result, readers retain less information due to the lack of deep, analytical reading. In addition, online texts often incorporate opinions, beliefs, or skewed viewpoints of certain topics, which can have negative effects on readers. Carr also addresses that some opponents believe that hardcopy reading was a result of “impoverished access” (111) and that the desire to use the fast paced web is a result of a quickening pace of life and work over the past few
It changes the way we read and how we interpret books. With the help of technology, a book can change with the implementation of links to “...be taken to a related dictionary entry, Wikipedia article, or list of Google search results” (p.102). Reading a book and reading an electronic book is distinctly different from one another. An electronic book may lead to different sources of information which will easily cause our brain to get used to this format of acquiring information. It can also become a distraction towards our main goal and cause us to wander off and find different information. Link after link, you slowly withdraw from your book. Our views on printed books would vastly change causing us to become uninterested and would prefer the book electronically. The difference is the electronic book’s words “...become wrapped in all the distractions of the networked computer” (p.104). It is more than likely that mostly everybody will read an electronic book than a printed
Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.
“While it is true that more books are sold today than ever, recent statistics show that only about 15% of books bought today are read. Evidently, they are of more use as furniture—coffee-table books—than as a source of information or aesthetic buzz. The statistics continue; of those that are read, less than 20% are read all the way through. The unfinished book symbolizes the state of attention spans today”. Eric McLuhan opens up his 2010 argument against technology with this quote. He seems to believe that literacy is only fully achieved through limited technology and hard copies of books. He fails to realize there is more to literacy that picking up a book defined as a ‘classic’ and reading it cover to cover. Literacy covers all spans of artistic
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.
However, iIn spite of the current pre-eminence of e-books, it may be argued that they are not likely to replace print books anytime soon or possibly at all. Both formats have their advantages and drawbacks, which makes for one of them difficult to replace the other. Moreover, they serve differents needs and purposes. E-books are famous for their portability. Hundreds of e-books can be stored on a single device. Thus e-books don’t take shelving space and are convenient to take on travel, while even a few paper books are bulky and quite heavy to carry around. Numerous e-books are in open access, while paper books are not routinely available free of charge. E-books may be acquired and accessed immediately online, a feature I enjoy especially and treasure most: many a time I was able to buy and read an e-book at home within minutes of learning of its existence. Needless to say, e-books are considerably easier to cite and quote than print books, since the copy-paste feature spares us the trouble of retyping the quoted text. Another important advantage of digital books is their specialized software, which makes reading much easier: search and reference tools, changeable font size and day/night mode, dictionaries. Last but not least, e-books conserv...
A book which is the crystallization of human wisdom is a medium product for getting knowledge. With development of the technology, a book is not only the traditional paper book but also the electronic book which is spreading frequently in human’s lives. Some people prefer using print books, but some people are interesting in electronic books. Different people have different opinions. There are many factors to consider when discussing the matter of electronic book vs printed book, but ultimately, it boils down to the reader’s preference. We are interesting to know which one is better printed book or electronic book, and the reasons.
Paper books are more durable and more engaging to the readers than ebooks. According to Sammons’ (2013) study, “A paper-bound book can outlast the life span of a human being [while] [t]he typical lifespan of a high-tech device is about 2-5 years.” This shows that the books that buyers have purchased in apps that exist in those devices will perish when the device becomes more damaged or not updated to the owner’s wants. If this is the pattern of book readers then it can be assumed that with time there will be less and less books that people will be interested in or even saved. Another reason that they are better is they keep the reader’s attention for a longer time. Sammon’s (2013) study also found that, “When you are reading a paper-bound book, there is nothing else you can do with that book. You entire attention is focused on the text and on nothing else [while reading an e-book has many distractions such as the web].” This shows that when readers are reading paper books they are more likely to focus only on the plot and the characters of the book w...
Some years ago, with the arrival of digital technology, the process of reading has been changed to make it easier for everybody; therefore digital books are replacing the actual physical books. In spite of the fact that paper books and digital books are very similar in some ways, such as tittle pages, copyright page, covers, chapters or tables of contents; they present a visual and a sensory difference. In fact, they have a similar action that gives benefits but drawbacks at the same time. Paper books are tangible, accomplishment, easy to share; they have a unique aroma, and a sensitive side. But people should take in consideration that digital books are the better choice, because they are portable, convenient, cheap in price, and easy to manipulate, not to mention that anybody is able to have an bunch of them in only one file, either their phones or
Sports throughout history have shown close ties and relations to values and cultures of a society. Sports and competition have adapted and grown as the world and people have grown and developed. Sports are often seen as simple consequence of the industrial revolution. The Impact of increased urbanization, better communication and transportation, as well as more time and income for specialization, all led to the creation of sports. (szymanski). In essence As the public sphere grew so did the concept of sport. (Szymanski). Even the impact colonization had on spreading sports, shows the congruence between the development of society and development of modern sports. What make sports very unique is that they always bring about a sense of culture
The main form of literature, the book, has had a great impact upon the formation of our society today. Before the 1940’s TV had not come into being yet and there was not much else to do other than read books. Thus books formed my grandparents and to some extent my parents and, although I grew up in the generation of TV, books as literature have indirectly formed me as well.
