Berkeley provides you endless learning possibilities. The Course Threads Program, created by the Townsend Center for the Humanities, allows all undergraduate Berkeley students to explore different disciplines. I could prepare myself and take courses across departments in Science and Technology to fulfill my graduation requirements. Also Berkeley offers a good and solid preparation for medical school and other health related organizations. Students in impressive numbers are taking part in these programs every year. Like many other schools, Berkeley does not offer any special pre-medical programs, since there is no specific major required in medical school. Every year, students with majors in the social sciences, humanities, chemistry and engineering get accepted to medical school. I have a special interest in biology; Berkeley has more than 25 areas of specialization in the biological sciences, such as chemical Biology, genetics and plants biology, nutrition and science, molecular and cell biology, and many other options. Berkeley provides also a graduation plan to help you navigate their programs perfectly. You are required to take two years of chemistry with lab, one year of physics with lab, …show more content…
one year of biology with lab, optionally calculus, English, and any type of advanced biological science and/or biochemistry. The campus offers a variety of research programs, to get you involved and connected to your subject. It would really help me to join one of the many programs, to develop more skills and be prepared for medical school. The campus has a limited medical program with UC San Francisco, through its graduate program in health and medical sciences. The five-year Joint Medical Program, earning a M.S. in Health and Medical Sciences from UC Berkeley and a M.D. from UC San Francisco is one of the programs I would be really interested in. It prepares a small number of students for their future in medical school. This program would give me an opportunity to address questions and problems, and exchange and research subjects in medicine, the humanities, and social and behavioral sciences. Overall Berkeley seems like the perfect school, with a high standard of education and a high rate of graduation. “Becoming a Golden Bear requires more than a test score. To “be Berkeley” requires persistence. And passion. And a desire to give back”. (Official website Berkeley/Based on Office of Undergraduate Admissions freshman data as of 08/01/15.) Another college I picked was the Los Angeles. This public college is located in a large city in an urban setting. The city so close; it is perfect when you need a variety of weekend options to relax or do something with friends. Also on campus activities, like women’s volleyball, soccer and handball, or a radio station, provide in a healthy environment. You could also say that there is a club for everything from Quidditch to Women’s engineering. I am really pleased to hear about the large variety of possibilities, because I am a really active person who likes a social life. People say, “It is academic, but with a taste of social life” (Cappex.com/ University of California-Los Angeles). Unfortunately the area in and around Los Angeles is really expensive, so you have to live most of the time with what is on campus. If students want to travel they can uber/bus anywhere in LA. “It offers certificate, bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees”. (California State University, Los Angeles/ www.calstatela.edu Home/ Find Colleges/ College Search/ California State University: Los Angeles) I also found out during my research that the dorms are pretty small and some of them are not air-conditioned. On top of this UCLA has no freshman housing while Berkeley has big dorms including for freshmen. One advantages of UCLA is that you have to pay for tuition and fees $12.753 per year, a little less that you would pay for Berkeley. You normally need at least a GPA of 3.7 to have a chance of being accepted fat UCLA. It doesn’t mean that students with lower GPA’s can’t get accepted, just much less likely. UCLA has a large variety of health and medicine majors. I was really interested in their medicine program, in particular. The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program is a six week enrichment program, that helps students develop into future leaders to change the face of medicine and improve health care delivery all over the world, policy and research in underserved communities.
Professors and staff enthusiastically support you. It allows students to talk about a “…variety of healthcare issues affecting medically underserved communities through problem-based learning cases, lectures, clinical experiences, small-group discussions, and a research project.” (Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (UCLA SMDEP)/ UCLA School of medicine) Students can improve their skills and solve problems much more quickly. That is a big plus point for the school and is only one of many major-based
programs. The last college I looked at is Long Beach. Like UCLA, it is a large school, located in a large city. The expenses for one year for tuition and fees are $6.452 only half of UCLA. It is repeatedly ranked as “One of the Top Five Public Comprehensive Universities in the Western United States” (U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges Guide, California State University) With nearly 4.000 students, CSULB has the largest physics department of any university in the state of California. CSULB has more art and design majors than any other public university in America. It also has the most masters in Nursing (MSN) graduates in the CSU campus system. The National Science Foundation published that CSULB is the top campus in the nation amongst Master's level-granting universities for producing students with doctoral degrees in the sciences. It has offices and labs for biology, biochemistry and chemistry, geology, physics and science education departments. Since the year 2009, CSU Long Beach has also become the most applied to campus in the California State University system. After I educated myself about all the colleges, I tried to contact the colleges to find out more. My emails never got answered or noticed. All of the three schools are really large colleges, so the response to emails and letters may take some time. As I tried to call Berkeley, they forwarded me to their website. Most information is already on the website and more information than brochures and pictures.
Going to college is a big step in a young person’s life. That is why when going to college; one should know which college they would like to go to. For me personally, the college of my dreams is Louisiana State University. The top three majors at Louisiana State University are Biology, Biomedical engineering, and Business. The main reason I want to go to Louisiana State University is because of their amazing biology department .The main things that caught my attention about Louisiana State University, was how flexible I could be with my money, it isn’t that hard to apply and the admission process is pretty doable, and the campus life is interesting with many clubs and organizations that I could join.
...things I like the most about my degree program is that it is not all about academic studies even though it is heavily science-oriented. In that regard, my classes do emphasize atomic physics and chemistry, but they also offer substantial opportunity for practical experience. In the words of Professor Hejny, "It's not just classes; clinicals, homework, and practical experience make this a full-time program."
I am especially excited about the prospect of studying at Berkeley in the environmental department. The certificate you offer for Green Technology is especially appealing to me, it seems to be a unique program that will train its graduates in what I consider the correct approach to addressing our environmental issues, technology. This certificate and the CLEE research center is one of the main reasons I value Berkeley. I look forward the opportunity to study within a historic environmental law department, along with its location, which allows the department to connect to the vibrant and cutting edge local community.
Starting college earlier than expected seemed like a completely misfortunate event. When first being informed that I would have to begin earlier than most, I only saw the negative and none of the positive. Actually going through the program, I realize that I would not have liked to spend my summer any other way.
While in high school take classes such as biology Chemistry, physics, health, & math. AP classes if available at your high school to become familiar with the subjects and be prepared for it at a college level
Coincidently, the curriculum of a biology/chemistry major and minor satisfies the prerequisite classes required by most medical colleges as well as the test material on the MCAT. This basis of knowledge will aid a student, ...
There are different levels of medical conditions. Some conditions may affect specific organs or systems within the body. This is the case with medical sanguinarians or med sangs. While all sanguinarian vampires drink blood to alleviate feelings of weakening health, med sangs drink blood to alleviate symptoms of a specific medical issue. The medical sanguinarian CJ! suffers from an irritable bowel. She has tried many different remedies and medications but has found that blood is the only thing that has any effect. According to CJ! after consuming blood, her “digestive system works wonderfully” (Robson). Doctors do not know why blood helps med sangs with their medical issues. In order to find an explanation, med sangs have begun to have their
I have always been good at biology and mathematics. This is one reason why one of my many goals is to major in biomedical engineering. I am very excited to start studying biomedical sciences, and hope to use my newly learned skills in the medical field. Achieving a college education in such field will pave the road for my future career, by teaching and instilling knowledge that would not have been learned otherwise.
Computer courses are useful as technology is changing the way medicine is shared by physicians today. To head a career as a physician, a student needs to first enroll in a liberal arts program in undergraduate institution. Some colleges offer a premed major, but a general education with as many science and math course as possible and a major in biology or chemistry is good preparation for the study of medicine also. During sophomore or junior year in college, students should talk with an adviser about taking the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). College students should apply to medical schools at the beginning of their senior year, so it is recommended to begin medical school research as early as freshman
Finally, Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo is another good choice for obtaining the Premedical education. For the last one hundred years, this school has educated student with the guiding principle of “learn by doing”. There are over 19,000 students at Cal Poly and over 80% are employed or attend some sort of graduate school within one year post graduation. Their acceptance rate for Medical School is not listed. Class size is more reasonable than the UC’s but still larger than St. Mary’s. (Cal Poly Website)
Healthy Student Living, this is a wonderful program offered to all Broward college students. It is especially great for any person going into the Health Science field. When you were in high school and planned on going to college I’m sure you thought of clubs, programs, and or organizations that will help assist you into the career you wanted. Well for all medical students this program is it! “We’re here to answer all of your health-related questions, form offering insight into sexually transmitted diseases to enlighten you about the food groups.” (Broward College, Student Life). Healthy Student Living gives students the following opportunities: (1) practice healthy living, (2) network with different physicians, and (3) interact with diverse groups of the community.
I chose this college because it is first in veterinary medicine in the United States. They also have a Veterinary Pathology club which is perfect for me. UC Davis started as a university farm in 1908. In 1922, Davis established their first 4-year degree program. The School of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1946. UC Davis is a rural public school. They have a 38 percent acceptance rate for the freshmen. They usually come in with a 3.95-4.25 GPA. In order to apply at UC Davis, you need to have a high school diploma, have a C or higher in all A-G subjects, and take the ACT or SAT test. On campus tuition costs $34,323, off campus tuition costs $29,243. At this college, I would pursue a cell biology major. Cell biology combines principles from many disciplines for a more complete understanding of cell function. Cell biology majors at UC Davis have access to extensive laboratory resources and research opportunities. You can be at the forefront of new frontiers in research in genetics, disease processes and developmental biology. Requirements for this major include: biological sciences and mathematic concepts.
It is one of two options in health science, with the other being an option in school health education. The reason why I chose this major is because I am interested in becoming a physician assistant because I want to help others. Physician assistants examine patients to diagnose illnesses or injuries and provide treatment. Being a community health education major is the first step to achieving my dream. Also, my friend’s older sister majored in health science and is currently training to become a physician assistant. She told me about her experiences and what she has been doing as an intern. Her story as an intern made me even more interested and I thought that becoming a physician assistant would be the best job for
The field trip I attended to Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu was very meaningful to me and truly helped me a lot. During the field trip, I was able to see the working environment that a variety of health professionals work in everyday. When learning about the wide variety of health professions that are offered at the hospital, it helped me obtain a better understanding of what I want to become when I grow up. I got to experience a range of activities that helped me sort what I was interested in and what I was not. I got to visit departments such as surgery, therapy, lab, K-9, and pharmacy. The information I learned helped me to see what I disliked and liked in the medical field. For example, I was able to visit the surgical department and
