There are different levels of medical conditions. Some conditions may affect specific organs or systems within the body. This is the case with medical sanguinarians or med sangs. While all sanguinarian vampires drink blood to alleviate feelings of weakening health, med sangs drink blood to alleviate symptoms of a specific medical issue. The medical sanguinarian CJ! suffers from an irritable bowel. She has tried many different remedies and medications but has found that blood is the only thing that has any effect. According to CJ! after consuming blood, her “digestive system works wonderfully” (Robson). Doctors do not know why blood helps med sangs with their medical issues. In order to find an explanation, med sangs have begun to have their …show more content…
A mental illness is a condition that affects mood, behavior, and thinking. Chemical imbalances in the brain, as well as, the environment a person lives in are factors in mental illnesses. Growing up in a violent household can cause mental illnesses such as depression or alcoholism while experiencing a traumatic event can cause post-traumatic stress disorder. Some researchers found that real vampires often have a bad upbringing which includes “abuse, neglect, alienation, and abandonment” (Keyworth 360). This kind of an upbringing can be directly linked to the discovery of drinking blood. If a child experiences a lot of violence, then being around blood is not unusual nor is accidentally ingesting some blood. Upon ingesting blood, children may take a liking to the taste and continue with the practice as a coping mechanism (360). This coping mechanism can be considered unhealthy, just like the coping mechanisms of other mentally ill individuals. Despite this link, the Diagnostic & Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) has not classified vampirism as a mental illness. Many people view vampirism as a mental illness but that is not an official
Mental illness can be a mixture of different factors. You can get mental illness through genetics meaning that it is passed down within the family. That can only happen if the mental illness is heredity. Another factor of mental illness is psychological trauma. Psychological trauma like abuse, or loss can cause some mental illnesses. When mental illness is untreated it makes it difficult for the person to function in society and deal with everyday life. The different types of mental illnesses range from anxiety disorders to personality disorders. Other mental illnesses are mood disorders, eating disorders, psychotic disorders, and impulse control and addiction disorders. An example psychotic disorder schizophrenia. Examples of eating disorders are bulimia and anorexia. According to MedicineNet.com “Most mental illnesses are caused by a combination of factors and cannot be prevented”. Mental illness is something that should not be avoided. The biggest issue when it comes to mental illness that is noticeable is when someone who has a mental il...
As it is presented here, vampirism is not a product of art, it is a path followed by every selfish and powerful one who misuse his powers on the account of others’ happiness. It is the moto of the outcast and those who are deprived of the good nature.
I chose a career as a medical assistant because of the rewards I knew I would experience on a daily basis. Seeing a patient smile because I have helped them understand, or just making them feel comfortable with their visit, is just one of the many perks of my job. Upon graduating from an accredited college such as The College of Health Care Professions (CHCP), I now work for one of the most reputable hospitals in my area. Within two short years of committed studies, I obtained my associate of applied science degree, and then went on to obtain my certification as a medical assistant. There is nothing I have found more fulfilling, strong, secure, or rewarding then choosing to become a medical assistant,
In today’s College in America there is a debate rather institutions should use the grade scale or pass-fail scale to determine the success of a student. I believe that Institutions in America should use the grade scale rather than the pass-fail scale. A grade scale gives the student an accurate percentage no matter if they passed or fail but with the pass-fail scale it just gives you the letter grade rather than the actual percentage grade.
“Blood thirst, too, may lurk inside a person, even those we love, and we may never even spot it. It may smolder in the bosom which is most cherished by us, and we may be perfectly unconscious of its existence there. Perhaps circumstances will not cause its development; perhaps moral principle may have bound it down with fetters it can never break.” (Baring-Gould).
For centuries, gothic authors depict the vampires as evil, repulsive, and socially secluded “creatures”, leaving the audience terrified by the gruesome details of the murdering and sucking the blood to kill the victims, in order for the vampire kind to survive. However, the modern vampire is drastically pulling away from that negative connotation, and becoming difficult to differentiate amongst the public. Since many Americans are struggling to make ends meet, they tend to seek out alternative methods of achieving money, such as donating blood for a payment. This not only helps struggling families in their time of need, but also helps people struggling with organ failure. This source of saving human blood is represented in Twilight, as the Cullen family of vampires, feed exclusively on animal blood in order to save human life. Though the gruesome murdering of the human victims from a vampire attack has been taken out of today’s stories, the general gloomy and eerie mystique of...
Blood transfusions allow for infected blood cells to be cycled out and replaced by fresh new blood cells in hope that hemoglobin levels will be restored within the body. When treating a person with liver disease it’s almost routine for them to experience several blood transfusions a month in order to help restore properly working blood cells back into their bodies. Blood transfusions are also a more structurally sound medical procedure when compared to several medications or radiation therapy alternatives, which can in turn cause a number of other problems. Another example of a disease that can be supported by the cycling of blood is Anemia. There several different types of anemia including aplastic, fanconi, hemolytic, and sickle cell anemia. The Mayo Clinic describes Anemia as “condition in which you don't have enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to the body's tissues”. Hematologists have been prescribing their anemia patients with several blood transfusions a month in hopes of training their bodies to make proper working blood cells once again. A study posted in the Journal of Palliative Medicine was conducted on 64 volunteer patients with several different forms of anemia to see if blood transfusions would benefit their hemoglobin values over a 15-day period. It turns out that 95 percent of the patients had some
Most of the time, daily pressures and responsibilities force us to overlook how important life is. We rarely take the time to consider the small things that we do for others and how these things can affect someone else life. Having an important effect is human blood it is something that everyone need is order to survive. Blood is something that cannot be produced. However, the
An infant brain is like a sponge, it absorbs everything and learns off of their surroundings and from the people around them, such as their parents; infancy is the significant time of development that forms who that person will later be in life. If an infant has gone through a traumatizing experience, then they will most likely always keep that experience in their mind, no matter how much they try to ignore it and distract themselves from it. Infancy, childhood and relationships with one’s mother are often among the key parallels of serial killer. Typically, if the child was sexually assaulted they grow up to be the serial killers that sexually assault their victims and necrophilia can occur. Childhood trauma played a key role in the lives
In our world today, we have a generally poor understanding of mental illness in two distinct ways: we don´t understand the dangers that mental illness can present to people as they go about their everyday lives, and we don´t understand how to properly care for people that suffer from mental illness. However, if we better understand when, why, and how mentally ill people can become violent, and if we can better understand how to identify and treat the illnesses these people suffer from, we can drastically improve the lives of many people.
Raine states: “ So, in the 1950s, little toddlers were playing outside, putting their fingers in dirt, putting their fingers in their mouths and absorbing the lead. Twenty years later, they became the next generation of violent criminal offenders because violence peaks at about 19 or 20. Then what happens is in the 1990s violence begins to come down, as it's been doing. What's partly explaining that? The reduction in lead in the environment (Raine, NPR).” This shows a biological connection to serial killer behavior. Temporal lobe or amygdala damage can show signs of psychopathy, which can lead to serial killer behavior (Kiehl, Bates, Laurens, Hare, & Liddle, 2006). Violent behavior has also been linked to deficiency in serotonin and high level of testosterone. Growing up in an unhealthy environment is also common in most serial killers. Sexual abuse, physical abuse, and mental abuse in a childhood home breeds serial killers. If someone grows up witnessing violence, it ingrains in their minds that violent behavior is okay. Before a serial killer commits a crime, they may be quiet, reserved, and keep to himself. In this stage, they are usually going on with their regular lifestyle. After a crime, they may taunt the media/police with notes and clues, as well as go on a killing spree. This is because some killers become obsessed with the urge to kill. Some may go as far as contacting the victim’s family. A fantasy is an elaborate
Ancient Romans, like the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians made a huge impact to medicine and health. The views of ancient Romans on medicine and health during this time were based on roman mythology as well as public health. The recognition of health, medicine, and religion of the ancient Roman citizens attempted to demonstrate equality of life throughout the empire.
Blood transfusions are potentially life-saving procedure that can help replace blood lost due to surgery or injury. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood (Blood Facts 1). Blood has been used as a form of therapy for a variety of ailments dating back as far as the 17th century. There is no question that blood is an incredibly valuable resource. Over the years, there have been several significant advances made in not only the research of blood but also medicine. The history and research of blood transfusions has brought the discovery of blood types and the incompatibilities of said blood types.
Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in North America and Europe in every community costing the U.S. over half a trillion dollars per year. Mental health is defined as the emotional and social wellbeing and psychological resources for dealing with the day-to-day problems of life. Mental illness is the term describing all mental disorders. Mental disorders are health conditions that are identified by changes in thinking and behavior. Mental disorders as well as mental impairment can occur from postnatal exposure to physical, chemical, and biological agents, like secondhand cigarette smoke. Brain function impairment can be caused by trauma, such as a car crash or bullet wound, or by disease, such as syphilis, cancer, or stroke. Maladaptive family functioning (such as having a parent with mental illness, or substance abuse problem) poverty, experiencing violence, physical or sexual abuse, or neglect can also lead to mental illness. Growing up in neighborhoods marked by social division leads to discrimination, and social hardship adds to the risk.
In the article “Violent video game have lower effects on highly exposed teens” by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins it states an experiment of low and high experience group of teens, that played violent and non-violent video games. The results were that the group of low experience had lower sleep after playing the violent video games and the group of high experience there was no difference in sleep after playing the two games (par 6). Children have a lack of sleep after being exposed to strong violence. Traumatization occurs in children, leading to poor sleep after witnessing horrifying murders, the amount of blood, and the pain that characters go through. Also, violent video game makes an effect in children heart rate. In the book of “Impulse Control Disorder” edited by Elias Aboujaoude and Lorrin M. Koran stated, “individuals who previously played violent video games and saw real violence it resulted that the individuals had lower heart rates and decreased of galvanic skin response” (185). Children feel anxiety when seeing these types of violent actions that is in the video games. The situations that occur in the video games can happen in reality, that is where anxiety is created to children. Children are more easily to be scared of things that can take away their lives, therefore violent video games show them homicides leading them to have an effect on their health. Minors
