Pop charts domination is a grueling goal to achieve and it’s fair to say that no artist can claim the crown for the last decade like Rihanna and her near perfect resume. Her career started as a 17 years old Barbadian curiosity and almost immediately exploded, making her a mainstay of radio airplay, dancefloor, galas, gossips and fashion events. When it comes to Rihanna, what stuns the most is her constancy. Of her eight albums, only her first did not boast at least one number-one song – her début single Pon de Replay “only” reached #2 in 2005. She reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 a whopping 11 times as a lead artist and another three times through features. Only Mariah Carey (18) and The Beatles (20) managed that feat more often than …show more content…
Just ask Lorde, the Hanson brothers or – hey! – Rihanna herself. Yet, for a myriad of (obvious) reasons, you should wait until you turn 18 to become a sexy pop superstardom contender. Technically, Rihanna was about a week shy of blowing her mandatory candles when SOS came out, but it didn’t stop her from turning into a sex symbol in the blink of an eye. Over a sample of Soft Cell’s Tainted Love, Rihanna flaunts the listener from the get-go without even relying on actual words. ‘La la la, la la la, la la la la la, oh’ probably won’t help you finish your PhD, but as it opens one of the best guilty pleasures of 2006, it sure will bring you back some sweet …show more content…
While tracks like opener Phresh Out The Runway are just downright embarrassing today, Diamonds remains an example of how Rihanna can be one hell of a classy act when she wants to. Originally written by Sia, the song allows Riri’s voice to let loose and to give her one of the most iconic line in her discography in “shine bright like a diamond”.
4. Kiss It Better
If the song wasn’t the biggest hit off Anti, it makes no doubt that Kiss It Better was the best song off it. More than just a ballad, Kiss It Better presents the dreamiest landscape Rihanna has ever found herself cruising in, helped by oozy synths in the verses and a guitar line embracing her voice in the chorus. Inspired by power ballads of the 80’s and 90’s, Kiss It Better manages to go way past simple nostalgia through its futuristic production and Rihanna’s full commitment to the songs in her vocal performance.
3. We Found
"I am a positive person, I never think of the glass as half empty. I just keep pushing forward" Rosie Perez the proud woman who declared this quote is a person who overcame many obstacles and difficulties to bring success in her life, despite her many hardships and traumatizing past.
Trina’s intent was to create a song that liberated women from the double standards and stereotypical views placed upon them. Her song however can cause harm to young women that listen to take this song to heart. Instead of liberation, we are moved further down into the hole of degrading and devaluing women. Trina should’ve sent the message that these things were wrong. Instead she endorsed and encouraged them.
I have always said the only thing I miss of a past girlfriend is her collection of Barenaked Ladies albums. After recreating her collection for myself, I learned that a new album was on the way. Maroon -- the band's sixth album is filled with 12 brand new songs with enough quirkiness and pop that will forever be the marks of the Barenaked Ladies (BNL). To my surprise Don Was, a Grammy Award winning producer whose name was also on my B-52's and Rolling Stones albums, produced this album. This pop-infused CD displays the BNL's signature of happy, jangly, tunes filled with sarcasm, irony, truth and passion embedded into every song that brings out old memories to everyone.
During the introduction stage, the product is initially launched and slowly grabbing the public’s attention (Solomon, 2008). Madonna’s career as an entertainer entered its introduction stage when the Warner Bros released her first self-titled debut “Madonna” in 1983. Madonna’s “funky, rhythm-and-blues-tinged sound” (Cengage, 2003) slowly caught the attention of New York underground club dancers and audiences. Madonna and her band members often visit the hottest clubs to attract more audience by wearing multicolored wardrobe and performing provocative dancing.
Beyoncé first started singing when she was 7 years old on “Star” a famous show for finding people with talent like “American idol”. In 1990 she started a group called “Gyrls Tyme” with Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett, and LaTavia Roberson. Beyoncé’s father quit his job in 1996 to make her most famous group “Destiny’s Child” and a record deal for “Columbia Records”. The group’s second album “The writing on the Wall” hit No.6 on the “Billboard” After hit singles “Say my name” and “Jumpin, Jumpin”. Apart from music, the singing sensation also launched her acting career with her 2001 debut film Carmen: A Hip Hopera. Beyoncé’s musical career along with other major and minor assignments has made her one of the wealthiest celebrities in the world. Be...
began, there were hardly any female rappers well known. She is a quite recent rapper but it did
Thanks to Victoria, British Columbia in Canada, the world has come to know a talented artist by the name of Nelly Furtado. You'd never gone to have any difficulties reminding her, as her goddess-like face is all that you need to remember. But when that mouth opens to sing songs, then it's a whole new level to like her even more than you expect. Her musical inclination is not just about singing by playing an impressive set of instruments on the likes of keyboard and piano, guitar, ukulele and even trombone.
In other words, through music, men are retaining the line that separates them from women by fortifying male supremacy. The inferior roles that were given to women have been internalized by adolescents, which studies have found to be affecting their interaction styles as well as their beliefs of gender limitations. According to the study conducted by Ter Bogt et al. (2010), women were more inclined to listen to R&B/Hip-Hop music which reinforces the idea that female adolescents are more often exposed to the normalized stereotypical gender roles in music lyrics. Although many of the modern R&B/Hip-Hop music by male artist stigmatize women, there were some that actually put forth the effort to uplift them. Wale, a well-known Nigerian-American rapper, used his lyrical creativity in “PYT” to change the standard course of hip-hop music. In the lines, “I just wanna see you shine/ nothing makes a man feel better than a woman/ Queen with the crown…” Wale talks about a woman who he labels as a Queen with her own spotlight. In this particular line, Wale goes against the norm of male-dominance and male-hierarchy as a step towards building gender equality. Within in R&B/Hip-Hop community, there seems to be an ongoing lyrical battle between actions towards retaining the norms and actions towards
Chances are if anyone has listened to the radio in the past few years, they have heard the song “Blurred Lines.” Produced and written by Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, T.I. (also known as Clifford Jr. Harris), and legally Marvin Gaye, “Blurred Lines” quickly became a nationwide hit when it was released in 2013 that was broadcasted through radios and televisions all over the world. With a contagious and an enjoyable beat, but such sexual and vulgar words, there have been many different ways that the song has been perceived by audiences. Radio stations and social media love and praise the song for having an exciting and an energizing beat, thus its quick fame around the world. However, many people believe that the song is a far cry from fun
Mariah Carey was born March 27, 1970 in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her parents are Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Carey who was a voice coach and opera singer. The day after she graduated high school she moved to New York City to pursue her music career. She started her career as a backing vocalist for Brenda K. Starr who gave columbia records Mariah’s demo tape at a party thrown by CBS records. The goal was to give the demo to a man named Jimmy Greenberg but it ended up in the hands of the president of Columbia records, after that her career took off.
In today’s world, celebrities are often misunderstood, especially singer/songwriter Robin Rihanna Fenty, referred to as Rihanna. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos have been talked about in negative ways for some time now, but what people do not understand is that it is all for fame. Celebrities will do anything to keep their careers going strong. If one really took the time out to take a deep look at Rihanna, they will notice how humble she really is. After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence in who she is.
Nicki’s apparent feminist agenda through her music and identity is being distributed to her wide audience, which covers a massive array of hip-hop and pop music fans. Her wide reach and continual influence has the potential to lastingly correct the anti-feminist, misogynistic tone of the male-dominated genre and culture. Despite her hyper sexualized image and defamatory lyrics, she is arguably a positive, albeit controversial, feminist role model, which is evident in her motivation for success, lyrical discourse, and use of and meanings behind her alter egos.
Rihanna in her childhood was inspired by Bob Marley, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. This reflected most in her very first single “Pon de Replay”, which was a reggae inspired dance track, immediately hitting the top 2 on billboard singles chart. The song not only reached a second place but also shout out to the world: Rihanna is coming! It was 2005, the year she kick
So even though we have come a long way since the 1920’s with womens rights the music and media industry is still holding women back. All of these songs used as examples have been produced within the last ten years. Blurred lines was from last year alone.
Today’s secular women cringe at the words “modesty”, “submissive”, and “stay-at-home-mom”. Our culture is obsessed with the feminist movement. The idea of a woman having a different role than a man is disgusting to them. American women enjoy the most freedom the world over, one could argue, because of how Christianity improved the treatment of women. Even with women’s elevated status in American, arguments against the fair treatment of U.S. women are many. Included in those grievances are wage discrimination, unfair responsibility in the home, and eating disorders; showing how modern feminists have been swayed through propaganda.
