In today’s world, celebrities are often misunderstood, especially singer/songwriter Robin Rihanna Fenty, referred to as Rihanna. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos have been talked about in negative ways for some time now, but what [eople do not understand is that it is all for fame. Celebrities will do anything to keep their career going strong. If one really took the time out to take a deep look at Rihanna, they will notice how humble she really is. After going through the abusive relationship with Chris Brown, Rihanna has struggled with gaining that strong confidence with who she is. Her critics believe that she is still trying to discover herself and figure out who she really is as a person. Rihanna is often given two choices, to do what she is being asked to do, or throw her career out the window. She either gives the crowd the sexual acts they want or let her career die down. In the song “S&M,” Rihanna was really exposing herself to the crowd, as well as “Good Girl, Gone Bad.” She is basically telling the crowd that this is the person she is, but is it really? For my original piece I will be creating a journal, expressing the feelings Rihanna felt as she overcomes her struggles. Rihanna’s sexual behaviors in her videos are really all for fame and therefore, are easily misunderstood.

...e overcame that. As expressed in the journal, Rihanna had many thoughts on her mind and was going through so much stress but she still had the power to gain her strength and confidence to overcome her obstacles. Critics believe that Rihanna is trying to discover herself and figure out who she really is as a person. I believe Rihanna is just putting on a act and is fooling everybody so she can make that money.

Allison has had a bitter past full of moments which have scarred her personality. She uses these and writes about the world that few are willing to admit exists. Many find refuge behind their gregarious nature and take comfort in religion or other bodies. However, that does not change the facts of what the world is and how it got there. Allison exposes her audience to these facts, and in the process, she shares her own view.
In this paper, I plan to explore and gain some insight on Audre Lorde’s personal background and what motivated her to compose a number of empowering and highly respected literary works such as “Poetry is Not a Luxury”. In “Poetry is Not a Luxury”, Lorde not only gives voice to people especially women who are underrepresented, but also strongly encourages one to step out of their comfort zone and utilize writing or poetry to express and free oneself of repressed emotions. I am greatly interested in broadening my knowledge and understanding of the themes that are most prominent in Lorde’s works such as feminism, sexism and racism. It is my hope that after knowing more about her that I would also be inspired to translate my thoughts and feelings
Objectification of women and misogyny is a common trend in song lyrics, but it is often socially accepted and further perpetuated. Finding a song in which the roles are reversed and a woman depicts a man as a sex object is incredibly difficult because when women try to break norms in the music industry, they are often criticized. In “Blah Blah Blah” by Kesha, she reverses the typical gender roles in song lyrics by objectifying men. Kesha has her own struggles within the male-dominated music industry because her producer sexually abused her and trapped her into a record deal. However, Kesha lost her court case, which illuminates gender issues within the music industry and the larger society. In 2010 when Kesha’s songs were popular, people weren’t aware of her battle with her producer. Instead, her lyrics classified her as more of a party figure and people even saw her as “trashy.” This song
Instead of proclaiming her feelings out loud, she suppresses them. The result is a series of recordings, which describes her life, and the things she wishes she could change.

Coupled with its relatability during the rise of feminist movements in the 1970s was Simon’s ability to share feelings harbored from past relationships with men. Simon’s new work was “playful, vulnerable, and romantic,” and her commitment to independence helped her to finally be seen as a meaningful voice within the industry. Her ability to put her career before romantic relationships and above conforming to traditionalist views of women “set her apart from her closest female peers” (Weller 168). Later songs like “You’re So Vain” continued to show that Carly was a force to be reckoned with as an artist who was unafraid to share negative feelings about men (Weller 343). Like King, Simon’s struggles surrounding society’s dictations of her role in her relationships with men and that allowed for her mistreatment by music industry professionals held her back in the short term, but when she was able to come into her own as an artist, these same struggles served as source material for her hit
When I first read about Marina Abramovic, I found her performance art can be both shocking and hold the attention of one. Her work ranges in physical intensity, emotional exposure, and sadness. Marina Abramovic work is about self abuse, self discipline, and unreasonable punishment and great courage. Through the conditions she puts herself and her audience in her performance. In my opinion, I feel Marina Abramovic and my main goal as an artist is not only to completely change the way art is seen by the public, but to push the performance the same line as fine art.
In 1983, Houston was signed to Arista Records and music executive, Clive Davis, became her mentor and helped launch her successful career. Whitney Houston was known as the innocent, girl-next-door, who promoted positivity and love within her professional career. Houston's good-girl image was shattered, when she married R&B bad boy, Bobby Brown, in 1992. Towards the late 90's, it was rumored that she was using drugs and she looked very thin. In 2006, Houston divorced Bobby Brown and entered into rehab, to end her addiction to cocaine and other drugs.

To overcome the ordeal, Oprah explained that she had t believe in a power greater than herself. “She also said in the discussion with Letterman that she spent much of her life attempting to rebuild her self-esteem. In the end though, Oprah overcame poverty, parental neglect, sexual abuse, and racism to become one of the richest and most powerful women in the entertainment industry.
Hip-hop and rap music are commonly criticized for its anti-feminist lyrics and degrading exploitation of women in music and music videos. (Sharpley-Whiting ) Many feminists have taken action against the music industry, which produces these messages in the music they release. However, in the hip-hop genre there are plenty of successful female rappers promoting feminist views, artist such as Queen Latifah and Mary J. Blige have made the choice to condemn the derogatory culture towards women. (Oliver, 382–384) However others female hip-hop artist, such as Lil Kim or Rihanna, have decided to provide no resistance towards the deleterious depictions of women in their music and in turn sometimes exploit themselves. Due to her extreme fame, success, and controversial image, at the front of this discussion is female rapper Nicki Minaj. Nicki Minaj is challenging the common view of women in hip-hop by proclaiming feminist ideologies through the art of reclaiming the genres negative undertones towards women and by providing an opportunity for women to be seen as equals rather than objects.
For this paper I decided to write about and present the song I’m Still Standing with music by Elton John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin, the song is a single from the Too Low for Zero album. The song I’m Still Standing is performed by Elton John, the album along with the songs is a reunion of both the song writer and musician after being apart for seven years from working with others. There is two ways to view this song and many audience listeners view the expression of this song to be pretty straightforward; it is about standing your ground in the face of adversity. Elton John who was a homosexual being the muse of this song and showing everyone that he is resilient and going to be just fine. Other listeners can view this song as overcoming a relationship and being ok in the end. Either way that listeners paint the picture the song is strong in its message of resilience and staying strong. While I’m Still Standing is one of the more well-known songs on the album, the whole album covers the context of overcoming life and love, as the Rolling Stone review says , “[Too L...

Britney was very successful from 1998 to 2000. During these years, things were changing for her. Britney was telling people about her “remaining a virgin until marriage” yet she was posing in pictures that convinced people to think otherwise. Her albums still continued to sell in the United States as well as in Europe. She embarked on many successful roads through 2003 (Wikipedia, 2011). Her public finally saw her as a woman not a girl.
Hua highlights the importance of Lorde's narrating of erotic, traumatic, and homeland embodied memories. These recollections have formed Lorde's identity and encourage "black women, women of color, and women in general" to speak out against oppression. Voicing these events adds power and authority over the body instead of women, in particular, preserving their silence. This would be deemed valuable for scholars who seek to take a feminist approach to Lorde's work. Hua suggests that Lorde's writing contributes to women literature since she's "rewriting the wounds of oppressive histories" (132). Then again, the focus on the exotic and traumatic separates the audience from the opposite sex to connect with Lorde's work. Since the article is driven towards a female audience a male scholar would probably not benefit from this piece work unless they take a feminist
