The genre of a film is very important as it draws the viewers into worlds different from the life they experience on a daily basis. In this paper I will be discussing several scenes in a movie (World War Z) that includes both thriller and sci-fi genre, and the stylistic elements used in this film. Thriller is one of the major film genres, it includes suspense with continuous movements and physical actions such as fights and battles. While sci-fi is mostly related to the science based and relates with the imaginative aspects such as aliens, zombies, advanced technology and several things that we are not used to seeing or hearing about on a daily basis.
One of the fundamental aspects that determine the genre of a film is the iconography and the

generic conventions in terms of character types and typical narrative conflicts. The convention character types include the antagonist (villain) and protagonist (hero) and innocent victims. In World War Z, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) is the protagonist and the antagonist are all the zombies that attack the humans throughout the film. By looking at the cover photo of the movie, we see helicopters and buildings crashing and burning, which gives an idea of the world ending and with the helicopters and fire we assume the film to be a thriller. The dark colors on the cover photo also suggests violence and mystery. Usually, thriller movies include justice and injustice with good and evil roles opposing each other along with the tension and suspense given to the audience. After the world is plagued by a baffling infection turning most of the human population into raging mindless zombies, Gerry who is a former UN investigator, goes on the mission to examine this disease while his family is protected on a safe offshore aircraft carrier. Two of the most interesting scenes in the film are the opening and the climax scene which occurs later on in the movie. The opening scene of this movie shows the tranquility of our world, which is later starkly opposed with the issues we face in today’s daily basis issues, but leaves the audience at a questionable thought whether this may occur in the future or not. In the opening scene there are several shots of television news with diegetic sound such as waves, traffic noises and presenters speakers as well as non-diegetic sounds such as the television and radio news. There is a use of montage editing which gives the audience a varied range of views of the world. A montage editing is a series of short shots that are edited into a sequence to condense time and information. The idea of having a clear understanding of the news that the reporter is giving, highlights the importance in what is being said. The scene shifts to Gerry and his family seated in a car who seem to be having a normal day until Gerry realizes there is something strange with the traffic. People are shouting and a police officer gets run over by a truck right next to their car as he orders everyone to stay in their cars and leave the doors locked. This scene causes anxiety to the viewers as well as curiosity to find out what is happening. The next most exiting and uplifting scene is when Gerry goes to an abandoned institute which he thinks might have a vaccination that will protect the humans from the zombies.
As he goes, he finds some other doctors inside the institute who are afraid of leaving because of the zombies inside the building with them. Gerry takes the risk and goes to test the vaccination as he passes by a zombie but does not get bitten. The iconography of his character shows his bravery through his ability to take all the risks and to face the creature that could kill him. While he injects himself with the syrup that should protect him, the background music is at first calm but full of suspense. The camera focuses on the injection as he gives himself the vaccination. The music becomes more and more suspicious and the camera moves from the protagonist to the antagonist who happen to be opposite each other causing frustration to the viewers. Gerry opens the door that happens to be separating the two characters and the music stops, causing the audience to jump off their seats wanting to know what could happen next. The suspense music comes back on with a lifting spirit that the protagonist is safe while the camera focuses on all the other zombies passing by him without harming him because the cure he has taken prevents them from sensing any humans around
them. Mise-en scene refers to all the elements of stage design including the props, furniture, windows and walls. Throughout the film, the tight frame of the protagonist (Gerry Lane) makes him look vulnerable and frightened especially by focusing the camera on his facial expressions using close-up shots. The colors and the locations used in the film are natural with not many props or odd costumes. The sound in the opening scene as well as throughout the whole film is extremely crucial as it stimulates the viewer’s mood giving them a high level of anticipation, heightened expectations, uncertainty and surprise. The Film creates a world of dense and exotic scenes. The goal in the movie is to find the cure for the spreading disease that is threatening to all humans and stop the zombie attack. Gerry goes on a mission that involves him in life threatening situations.
Last but not least, Genre is a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, and technique. Aside from the character structure the genre can be compared and contrasted in these two movies. The movie Bicycle Thieves genre is a mystery/crime and Big Deal on Madonna Street is a comedy. Even though the two movies are two different genres they do share similar set ups. Both movies are about the social issues of Italy but Big Deal on Madonna Street amplifies and spoofs Italians
Film Noir, as Paul Schrader integrates in his essay ‘Notes on Film Noir,’ reflects a marked phase in the history of films denoting a peculiar style observed during that period. More specifically, Film Noir is defined by intricate qualities like tone and mood, rather than generic compositions, settings and presentation. Just as ‘genre’ categorizes films on the basis of common occurrences of iconographic elements in a certain way, ‘style’ acts as the paradox that exemplifies the generality and singularity at the same time, in Film Noir, through the notion of morality. In other words, Film Noir is a genre that exquisitely entwines theme and style, and henceforth sheds light on individual difference in perception of a common phenomenon. Pertaining
Identify specific elements of a motion picture that film studios look for in a successful movie.
Investigating How Genre and Narrative are Established in Ocean's Eleven and The Bone Collector In order to examine how genre and narrative is established in two crime films, we conducted a close textual analysis of Ocean’s Eleven and The Bone Collector to find out the main conventions. The main conventions of the crime genre are law enforcers, criminals and action sequence. There are also other signifers such as criminals and etc. You can find typical iconography in the crime genre; the most obvious one is a gun.
A noticeable difference in the way movies have changed over the years is evident when comparing and contrasting two films of different eras which belong to the same genre and contain the same subject matter. Two vampire movies, Dracula and Bram Stoker's Dracula, present an interesting example of this type of study.
The genre of the film is how we know what kind of film it is. Genre is a French word which literally means type; it shows what category a film comes under. There are certain factors in a genre which will identify it. Things like settings, characters and themes can all be similar in one specific genre.
Friedman, L., Desser, D., Kozloff, S., Nichimson, M., & Prince, S. (2014). An introduction to film genres. New York, London: W.W. Norton & Company.
Film scholars around the world agree that all genres of film are part of the “genre cycle”. This cycle contains four different stages that a specific genre goes through. These stages are: primitive, classic, revisionist, and parody. Each stage that the genre goes through brings something different to that genre’s meaning and what the audience expects. I believe that looking at the horror genre will be the most beneficial since it has clearly gone through each stage.
The Alfred Hitchcock film; Vertigo is a narrative film that is a perfect example of a Hollywood Classical Film. I will be examining the following characteristics of the film Vertigo: 1)individual characters who act as casual agents, the main characters in Vertigo, 2)desire to reach to goals, 3)conflicts, 4)appointments, 5)deadlines, 6)James Stewart’s focus shifts and 7)Kim Novak’s characters drives the action in the film. Most of the film is viewed in the 3rd person, except for the reaction shots (point of view shot) which are seen through the eyes of the main character.(1st person) The film has a strong closure and uses continuity editing(180 degree rule). The stylistic (technical) film form of Vertigo makes the film much more enjoyable. The stylistic film form includes camera movements, editing, sound, mise-en-scene and props.
Images, props, characters and sounds that are repeated again and again throughout films in a certain genre are classified as iconography. Examples of iconography in science fiction include high-tech gadgets, larger than life monsters, flying cars, aliens, etc. Similar to myths, the imagery remains the same over time, but they way it is conveyed changed. Take into consideration props: as technology evolved, the way props were made and the materials used to make them changed. For example, a UFO in an early twentieth century film may have been cheaply made from scrap metal and foil. As time goes on, UFO prop is made out more expensive and carefully crafted and detailed materials. In addition, as new discoveries in science are made, more accurate and futuristic images and plots can be thought
When Michael gets the knife, his murder weapon, the audience begin to realize his intentions once again. Once Michael has collected his murder weapon he makes his way into the house and as he starts to move tothe stairs there is a high pitched piano note that make the audience fearful of what Michael is going to do. When the girls boyfriend
The genre i have studied is musicals. A musical is a film which has musical performances from the actors to express their feelings. The films from this genre that i studied are 'Singin' In The Rain' (Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1952), 'Grease' (Randall Kleiser, 1978) and 'Hairspray'(Adam Shankman, 2007). I studied two characteristics of the musical genre (Breaking Into Song And Dance and The Grande Finale) that are shown in the films studied. The identifying characteristics of 'Breaking Into Song And Dance' and 'The Grande Finale" are always seen in musicals. These characteristics are expected to be in a musical by the audience and ultimately make a musical what we predict it to be, a film that expresses characters feelings through song while
I had never intended to read World War Z before this class began. In fact, I did not realize there was a text version in addition to the film version. This collection of personal stories from different aspects of the zombie wars was a mixed bag for me. There were some recollections that pulled on my heartstrings, and others that I could have gone without ever reading. In times of great turmoil, people are shown to be exactly who they are, their true colors shining through all of the masks and deception they have created. The entire world lived in fear during the time period of this novel, and watching their loved ones disappear or become part of the army of the undead had to be terrifying. The author might have chosen this topic because the threat of zombies invading the world is a fear that is as real to some as the war overseas is to others.
A genre is a type or category of film (or other work of art) that can be easily identified by specific elements of its plot, setting, mise en scène, character types, or style. (Goodykoontz, 2014) The gangster film is a sub-genre of the broader genre of crime film. A genre main objective is to classify the depiction of entertainment. The genre of my movie is a gangster film. My movie I chose was Scarface. Directed by Brian De Palma. An update of the 1932 film, Scarface (1983) follows gangster Tony Montana and his close friend Manny Ray from their trip on the Cuban Boat Lift for refugees to their arrival in Miami. (Scarface, 1983a)
During the course of this essay it is my intention to discuss the differences between Classical Hollywood and post-Classical Hollywood. Although these terms refer to theoretical movements of which they are not definitive it is my goal to show that they are applicable in a broad way to a cinema tradition that dominated Hollywood production between 1916 and 1960 and which also pervaded Western Mainstream Cinema (Classical Hollywood or Classic Narrative Cinema) and to the movement and changes that came about following this time period (Post-Classical or New Hollywood). I intend to do this by first analysing and defining aspects of Classical Hollywood and having done that, examining post classical at which time the relationship between them will become evident. It is my intention to reference films from both movements and also published texts relative to the subject matter. In order to illustrate the structures involved I will be writing about the subjects of genre and genre transformation, the representation of gender, postmodernism and the relationship between style, form and content.
