The genre i have studied is musicals. A musical is a film which has musical performances from the actors to express their feelings. The films from this genre that i studied are 'Singin' In The Rain' (Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, 1952), 'Grease' (Randall Kleiser, 1978) and 'Hairspray'(Adam Shankman, 2007). I studied two characteristics of the musical genre (Breaking Into Song And Dance and The Grande Finale) that are shown in the films studied. The identifying characteristics of 'Breaking Into Song And Dance' and 'The Grande Finale" are always seen in musicals. These characteristics are expected to be in a musical by the audience and ultimately make a musical what we predict it to be, a film that expresses characters feelings through song while …show more content…
being over dramatised and unrealistic but providing a happy, satisfying ending. The indentifying characteristic of Breaking Into Song And Dance is vital to a musical film. It expresses characters feelings and wants through song and dancing in a way that that interests an audience and makes a musical what it is, a film with musical numbers. The characteristic od breaking into song and dance is consistiently used in 'Grease' to show the main characters Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy's (Olivia Newton - John) feelings and emotions, usually towards eachother. In the song 'Summer Nights' both Danny and Sandy tell their friends of their experience with the other at the beach. Sandy sings the romance focused lyric "He got friendly, holdin' my hand" while Danny sings the lyric "She got frienly, down in the sand" Danny sings more about his sexual exploits, rather than the romantic side of the summer fling. Danny sings about his sexual exploits to impress his friends, who are eager to know wat happened between Sandy and Danny. This is shown by how Dannys friends sing "Tell me more, tell me more" after every line Danny sings and "Did she put up a fight" which further emphasizes Dannys friends (The T-Birds) intent of knowing about the sexual exploits of Danny and Sandy while also displaying the males of the film to be sex focused and the females to be mostly innocent. Sandy's friends ask if Danny has a car and money in some lyrics, showing that they, along with Sandy are more focused on wether Danny can look after Sandy. In the film 'Hairspray' the character Tracy (Nikki Blonsky) sings the lyric "Welcome to the sixties" in the song '(Hey Mama) Welcome To The Sixties' as she gets her mother to leave the house for the first time in ten years, showing her mother that the sixties is different from the fifties as being different is slowly being welcomed into their society. This, along with the lyric "Go baby, go, go, go!" is pushing Tracy's mother into the sixties. The repetition of "go" emphasizes this. The characteristic of breaking into song and dance can increase the amount of money a film brings in, as the songs in the film can be made into a purchasable sountrack for the public. The second identifying charcteristic studied from the genre of musicals is ' the grande finale'. The grande finale is vital to the musicals genre as it resolves major issues and conflict that occured in the film while also providing a happy, satisfying ending and a large finishing song. The characteristic of the grande finale is used in 'Hairspray' with the song 'You Can't Stop The Beat'. The title and lyrics of the song really show what is trying to be expressed as beat is a metaphor for change is this song and a major change is society just occured in the film. As Tracy and most of the cast of teen dancing show The Corny Collins Show sing "You Cant Stop The Beat" It shows the change of black rights with blacks being allowed integration. The metaphor of beat meaning change (of Black Civil Rights) resolves the major inequality issues in the film concerning race. In the film 'Singin ' In The Rain' the grande finale song is 'Singin' In The Rain'. The lyric 'Singin' in the rain" and "i'm happy again" provide a happy ending and when Kathy (Debbie Reynolds) has to dub for Lena (Jean Hagen) by singing for her and the curtain drops, showing Lena is a fake and a fraud . It resolves the issue of Kathy not getting the praise she deserves as well as showing the true Lena. As Kathy runs off stage, embarassed, Don (Gene Kelly) runs and catches her and tells the audience that Kathy is the "real star of the film". This grande finale resolves all of the issues of the film, as well as the song 'Singin' In The Rain' becoming extremely well known in households everywhere. The satisfying resolving of issues and conflict paired with a catchy song is appealing to the audience as it gives a sense of closure, leaving the audience with a nice, happy song and knowing everything is ok. In the musical genre, an implication is genre hybridisation (NOTE: in last essay you asked "which characteristic? and i dont know what that means) Genre Hybridisation is the mixing of two or more genres, therefore, creating a sub- genre or genre hybrid, examples of this being romantic comedies and coming of age musicals.
This implication is shown in all three studied films with Singin' In The Rain being a romantic musical, Grease being a coming of age musical and Hirspary being a coming of age drama musical. In Hirspray, the genre hybridisation is quite apparent with the racial inequality issues that are faced in the film along with the drama and coming of age aspect of the film. With the genre of being musical mixed with one or more genres it expands the target audience by bringing in people who enjoy coming of age films and drama films as well as those who are interested in Black Civil Rights. This expansion of genre also changes how musicals are viewed, not subjecting them to only being amusical but allowing them to be more by combining romance or comedy or other possible genres. The charcteristics of breaking into song and dance and the grand finale also effect genre hybridisation in films as they can change how a film pans out, with what the songs say and how the grande finale concludes the film, making it sad or happy ie. weither charcters graduate or not. In 'Singin' In The Rain' the romantic songs help to shape the film into a romantic musical hybrid, for example the grande finale of 'Hairspray' with the integration of black and white people shapes the filmas one that deals with Blck Civil Rights and also a drama musical. Genre hyrbridisations expansion of ausience and genre brings in more money for the director(s) and industry by how it provides a larger, more diverse audience that it would have been previously. Genre Hybridisation can make films extremely successful, as shown by the film 'Grease' which is now known known world wide, had massive soundtrack sales and is still popular
today.
Last but not least, Genre is a class or category of artistic endeavor having a particular form, content, and technique. Aside from the character structure the genre can be compared and contrasted in these two movies. The movie Bicycle Thieves genre is a mystery/crime and Big Deal on Madonna Street is a comedy. Even though the two movies are two different genres they do share similar set ups. Both movies are about the social issues of Italy but Big Deal on Madonna Street amplifies and spoofs Italians
"Genre: A group of films having recognizably similar plots, character types, settings, filmic techniques, and themes." (Konigsberg:165) The Genre of this film is difficult to define because it is not composed of a single agenda. The director makes a point of talking about Tosh’s life, but because of the cinematic themes and the film’s style it is not solely a documentary. This film is also a multimedia film because elements of music and concert footage are added to the essential plot. This film is avant-garde in it’s nature. "Avant-garde [refers to films that] deny the traditional narrative structure and techniques of commercial films by seeking to explore new modes of visual and emotional experience." (Konigsberg:25) It could be considered an anthology film, because of the various concert footage that is woven throughout the movie. "An Anthology film is a full length film made up of excerpts from other films which are related by some theme [or] the appearance of the same performer." (Konigsberg:16)
Ever heard of a story that sings of the “Angel of Music” and the “Phantom of the Opera”? A tale that once you have listened to the sweet melody that you will realized that you've pasted the “Point of No Return”? This love triangle has captivated multitudes ever since the 1910 original Phantom of the Opera was published in France by Monsieur Leroux, although most story lovers recall the musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber or the motion picture adaption. Although this story has been entertaining people for over a century, in this new era have prerecorded voices and movements begun to overshadow the talented performers of live theater? Although “The lavish screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera (2005) only deepened the damage” of the dislike of musicals made into film “with non-stars in the leads and an unimaginative production,”(Musical),which version, the live performance or the film, makes the story more attractive? To answer these questions, permit this essay to analyze two methods of storytelling: 2011 live performance Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall and the 2005 film, and decide if music and story lovers everywhere have too “turned from true beauty”.
The genre of the film is how we know what kind of film it is. Genre is a French word which literally means type; it shows what category a film comes under. There are certain factors in a genre which will identify it. Things like settings, characters and themes can all be similar in one specific genre.
In understanding the art form of expression in various ways like music and play writes, it brings together this sense of self identity that the artist wants to fulfill. Having this understanding about the life behind the scene, screen, and/or stage. My paper will present two art forms music by 50 cent “Many Men” and William Shakespeare play “Macbeth” in which I will describe similarities among the characters. My four categories for 50 cent and Macbeth are as follow Greed, Savage, Survivor and Success.
Popular music places a premium on accessibility, represents various meanings to boost both instant appeal and memorability - distinctive tunes, novel instrumental flourishes, danceable rhythms, repeated riffs - but its signal feature is melodic emphasis and great vocal gatherings.
Since theatre was established as an art form, it has constantly been changing and developing as new methods of theatre styles came to light. This is also true with how musical theatre developed into how we know it today. Vaudeville and burlesque were forms of theatre in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s that forged the way for the American musical to emerge. The elements that writers used from vaudeville allowed for not just musical acts to be performed during the course of the story, but eventually became a way for the story to further be told. The American musical was not always as big as it is today, and vaudeville and burlesque acts made it possible for such a type of performance style to develop. Musical writers used multiple elements, not just the song element, in their stories. This change did not just happen overnight. The evolution from vaudeville and burlesque was a gradual one, taking years to further develop the performance styles into the Broadway musical we can see today.
Friedman, L., Desser, D., Kozloff, S., Nichimson, M., & Prince, S. (2014). An introduction to film genres. New York, London: W.W. Norton & Company.
The film showed slapstick humor with their witty lines and with the way they delivered their dialogues. This humor and attitude that the actors put into the characters makes them unique and distinctive as each of their characters. As an example for this, Lina Lamont had her voice as her asset on being distinctive among the different characters. Another characteristic that was seen in the film was how taken in one take when there would be dancing scenes. That characteristic kept the film's distinctive way of being a musical as there were no other angles and showed the continuity of the dances in the film. The numerous songs and dances filled with a bunch of people in the film respected Singing in the Rain's being as a musical on theatres. Also, the songs served as the film's transition to different plots and scenes and were highlights to the important parts of the film. The film was truly filled with positive vibes and joyous songs, which is ready to set anyone into a good laugh and a great time watching this musical
The hit musical "Singin' in the Rain" may possibly be one of if not the greatest musicals of all time. With it's tale of the film world of the mid 1920's and its creative underlining love story between Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds), it provokes the interest of someone who would not generally be attracted to a musical. It is a classic masterpiece that set the standards that musical films of today will be judged by. It is a classic performance by the great Gene Kelly and displays outstanding performances by Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. As well as starring in this brilliant movie, Gene Kelly teams up with Stanley Donen to make their mark in film history.
Hip-hop culture, once confined to the streets has broken into the commercial realm with force. Hip hop records top the charts week after week, rap videos have taken control of MTV, BET and the BOX, and there are dozens of hip hop magazines on the newsstands. A stroll on any city street in the United States reveals the proliferation of hip-hop styled apparel. The culture itself had much humbler beginnings, however. On the street corners and in the parks, young men and women battled through freestyle rhymes and dance moves. Whatever the time period, and whoever he MC may have been, Rap has incorporated, and included several of the "classical" musical characteristics present in most western music today. These characteristics have influenced the popularity of this genre from coast to coast; as well as, giving the music a chance to penetrate into the homes of a vast array of people (White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, etc.). When one is referring to certain musical characteristics, pitch, dynamics, timbre, rhythm, melody, harmony, key, texture, form, and various others are usually mentioned. It is fascinating to see how many of these characteristics are present in the hip-hop culture, more specifically in rap music.
Genre is difficult subject to define, yet many have attempted to define it including Franco Fabbri. Franco didn 't believe that there was a set definition for genre however he thought that it was ‘governed by a definite set of socially accepted
... been changing in movies and television to adjust for everything feeling “familiar”. Horror-spoof flicks and action, romance, comedy movies have been made because sticking to one genre would now bore people and would result in them walking out or changing the channel. The only question left is what will happen once people are bored with genre mixing. In other words, when the “strange” becomes “familiar” what will satisfy people’s appetite for entertainment? Maybe the emergence of the perfect genre will take over the market by stealing the best parts of all music and combining it to please everyone. The Internet Age is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to music. A person is able to create masterpieces by using other people’s music and blending various genres but one must not forget the Internet is what has caused people to crave creativity in the first place.
1. What is the difference between Genre We think that this play is a psychological and philosophical play, because it is about two men who are waiting for a God. So, in our opinion, this play, in spite of being an absurd stage, is about religion. We think that this is a play of ideas, we know what is happening when we see it on the stage, not before.
