This decade has shown many improvements of heavier than air flight. World War II has influenced the advancement of technology. We are starting to see changes in aviation. More airplanes are being produced than ever before. Airships are becoming a thing of the past. This is mostly because airplanes are better suited to use in the military than airships. Airplanes can travel much faster than airships. The average speed of the warplanes used in World War II, such as the F4U Corsair or the Supermarine Spitfire, is around four hundred miles per hour! This decade is the golden age of air travel. It is now possible to travel pretty much anywhere in the United States by hopping aboard a plane. The invention of the jumbo jet has made it possible to seat upwards of 75 passengers. Some of the cabins are beginning to be pressurized. This makes the air pressure inside the airplane equal to the air pressure at sea level. The first jet airliner ever produced was the De Havilland Comet. It started its service on May 2, 1952. The Comet was very difficult to fly for even experienced pilots. The first three Comets all ended up in flames. Two of the crashes took place when they were landing while the third was lost in a thunderstorm. The De Havilland Comet was not a popular airliner due to its tendency to crash. One of the most successful airliners now is the Boeing 707. The first prototype took to the skies on July 16, 1954. Its service began in 1958. This aircraft is definitely going to go down in history as one of the first successful passenger jets. The interior of these new age airliners is extremely luxurious. Most of airliners include free drinks and meals. The tickets to board these luxurious airliners may cost an arm and a leg, but it will be an experience you will never forget if you can afford it.
