World War I was the first long lasting war of the 20th century. It changed the outlook of everyday citizens, and normalized cynicism, or the belief that people were motivated by self-interest. However, World War I began with an act of terrorism. On June 28, 1914, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand had taken place in Sarajevo by a Bosnian Black Hand member. More than ever before, the war involved more countries and colonies than any of the wars before it. It wasn't the most destructive war, or the first total war, and it certainly wasn't an event that ended all wars, but it was a war that led to many creations and innovations. Many countries and central powers rivaled against each other in the battle for colonies and resources which …show more content…
Britain, Russia, and France were a triple entente while Germany, A/H, and Italy were a triple alliance. The assassination of the Archduke led Austria to giving demands to Serbia, however, because Serbia only agreed to some but not all of the demands, Austria demanded war against Serbia. Then due to Russia's alliance with Serbia, Russia mobilized its army, and because Germany had an alliance with Austria they told Russia to stop mobilizing, however, Russia, the first big country to mobilize, refused to do so. Germany then mobilized its own army and declared war on Russia, cemented an alliance with the Ottomans and declared war on France. Germany's war plan was also known as the Schlieffen Plan. Within this plan, germany planned to invade France, located by Belgium, smoothly and quickly. In short, Great Britain was a friend of Belgium's so as a dual alliance, they declared war on Germany. By August 4th, all of the major central powers of Europe were at war. Japan, honoring its alliance with Britain went to war against Germany and Austria. World War I, also referred to as the Great War, was global conflict among the greatest Western powers and beyond. From 1914-1918, this turf war swept across rivaling nations, intensifying oppositions and battling until victory was declared. The growing development of militarism, the eruption of powerful alliances, as well as the spread of imperialism, and a deepening sense of nationalism, significantly promoted to the outbreak of the Great War.
“War is unorganized murder, and nothing else” (Harry Patch). In World War 1, which was first called the Great War, there were many causes of the war breaking out. The Great War started August 1st 1914 days later after the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophia, when they visited Bosnia. Many soldiers went to war for no reason but to fight for their country. The Great War was not only affected by the soldiers, but also by the civilians as well. Women replaced men in factories, offices, and shops while the men were at war so that everything would be working smoothly. The main underlying causes of World War 1 were the alliances and imperialism in Europe.

It also destroyed the economy later on. World War I changed combat tactics in a whole new way, where people would die in a blink of an eye. Commanders and soldiers did not know about the capabilities of their new arsenals. The new industrialized developed weapons devastated the battlefield with blood, mountain of corpses, and small craters. Some of the weapons that were used were machine guns, poison gas, mortars, and tanks. Soldiers described the battlefield as a nightmare. This was the start of a new era arising through warfare. A very dangerous way to bring great change to the world but was not intended. World War I brought great changes to the world but, considering the countless deaths, it was the worst war ever, an inhumane war.
The First World War, also known as the Great War, began in about 1914 and went on until 1918. This brutal war was an extremely bloody time for Europe and the soldiers that fought in it. These men spent their days in trenches holding down bases and taking in attacks from all sides. The soldier's only free time was consumed with writing letters to those on the home front. The letters they wrote contain heart breaking stories of how their days were spent and the terrible signs of war. The War consumed them and many of them let out all their true feelings of war in their letters to loved ones. In The First World War: A brief History With Documents we can find some of these letters that help us understand what the First World War might have been like for these young and desperate soldiers.
Alliances between European nations can also be considered an underlying cause of World War I. As a result of the Triple Alliance consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, the Triple Entente (understanding) was formed between France, Britain, and Russia. Although France and Britain were natural enemies, their fear of Germany united them together with Russia. These alliances set the final stage for the beginning of World War I. Each country in each alliance would help each other during warfare. For example, if Germany attacked France, Britain and Russia would help France, and Italy and Austria would help Germany, dragging Europe into a state of chaos and violence.

When developing studies in history, the theme explored, the scope of sources, and the methodologies employed determine the outcome of one’s research. Around the field of history, there are distinct schools characterised by the kinds of history examined, what sources they utilise, and the methods adopted in a study. During the 2017 run of Canterbury University’s history research seminars, participants were exposed to a range of themes and approaches in the study of history. For example, David Monger put forth a history of the role of patriotism in World War I Britain considering its impact on British society and the war effort.
The countries that were part of the triple alliance were: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy and those apart of the triple entente were: France, Russia, and Great Britain. The Triple Alliance were having a poor communication between themselves. Germany was the only country of the triple alliance who was apart of the Schlieffen plan. Germany knew that Russia did not have as much advanced technology as France. Therefore, Germany made it their mission to defeat France within six weeks; however, the mission had backfired.
World War 1 was the first and only war of its kind, in aspect of changing the lives of everyone involved. At the beginning of the war, all sides believed that this would be the best way to show there dominance, and were ultimately disappointed. World War 1 was used to transition into a different type of fighting, one in which killing was more prominent resulting in the decay of the nationalistic pride of many soldiers and civilians. Even when trying to make amends, countries still wanted to show dominance, which was visible at the Paris Peace Conference. This makes us wonder how can we understand the outcome of WWI through the nature of the war itself, and anybody involved in it. By observing the expectation of the war at it’s beginning, how technology and tactics change, how emotions toward the war change, and how peace is created, we can understand this
