It is 1918. The Great War has just ended. The war was so long, it seemed like it would never end. I have written in this diary since I was 13, when tensions of war were going around the world. I am now 17, and this diary has made me feel safe for the past four years. The end of the war had just happened a few days ago, but it has already impacted my life.
I live in Great Britain. When the war first started, we didn’t want to get involved. In the early 1900s, Britain was worried about Russia more than Germany. Britain was actually worried more about Russia and France. We had no interest in going into war, and Germany hoped we would stay out of it. This is the story, written in my diary, about my life during the war and after.

The war has only been going on for two years, but it feels like a lifetime. I just turned 15. Father is still fighting in the war. We have continued to fight with another force until the loss of Germany. There was a disaster at the Battle of Somme though, and they had to rebuild everything. This war is devastating and I really want it to end. ~Dianne.
My diary, it is 1917. I have finally turned 16. That has been the happiest thing this whole year. Unfortunately, father died in the war. The days have gone by so slowly. Father used to wake me up every morning and we would go for a walk. His death has impacted my life so much. He was the person I could talk to. Germany has brought submarine warfare into the war, and now America is fighting in this war. Last year we tried to attack Mesopotamia, but we failed. We tried again this year and destroyed the Ottoman armies in Mesopotamia and Levant. Goodbye diary, I’ll write to you in a year.~ Dianne
My diary it is 1918. I turned 17 two months ago. The new American Army cracked the German Western front. It feels like the end of the war is coming, but I have said that every year. Who knows when the war is going to end. I really hope soon. Our family has had to move a few times already and I’m sick of it. I’m begging for this war to end.
War is what keeps a nation from dying, it is the backbone of a country. This is the shown throughout the course of World War I, also known as “the war to end all wars.” World War I started in the summer of 1914. Archduke Francis Ferdinand, from the Austro – Hungarian Empire was visiting Bosnia. He was shot, along with his wife, Sofia, by a young man from the Black Hand, Gavrillo Princip. What were the three main factors that started World War I? There were three main underlying causes that started World War I: greed, nationalism, and militarism.
In document thirteen, we encounter a letter written by a young English soldier fighting the Germans from the woods. He starts his letter by explaining how once again he was forced to be out in the trenches for forty-eight consecutive hours. The letter, addressed to his parents, illustrates how devastating it can be for a young man out at war. When he asked for time alone they told him to take a group of men with him and after a bit of difficulty they finally let him go off on his own. While he is out on a stroll he comes across a German trench and kills an officer, he does the same thing the next day. By the end of the letter he simply defines the experience as awful.
Living in a time of war is not easy for anyone, and the expansive nature of the current war can make it even harder. Though many people in America may not feel as if they have been effected by the ongoing war, it is likely that everyone has in some way, shape or form. One group most effected are those who have loved ones serving in the military. People with family members that are serving have to face significant hardship and challenges as they cope with a person they care about being in danger. Being away means that family members often don’t have as deep of emotional relationships and while technology can sometimes make that easier, it can also be more frustrating. I don’t know where my uncle is now, and millions of others have the same issue. War truly is hell, for the people fighting and the families back at home. It effects everyone.
...ve you a different perspective of what it was like for a German during World War 1 . Most books that you read only tell you about the other side of the was not about how the Germans felt. All in all war is not needed and can be avoided, if everyone looks back over everything that has happened in all the wars fought, all the lives lost , and all the horror and terror that has been brought down upon all the families and soldiers, why are we still fighting?
Although there were many different individual and group experiences during and after the war, “the generation of 1914” may be used to collectively regard the suffering and sacrifice that all participants of this “generation” endured. Both Vera Brittain’s Testament of Youth and Robert Graves’s Good-bye to All That express a common theme of suffering, sacrifice, and the betrayal of their generation. Brittain wrote extensively about her generation’s loss and endurance of so many physical and mental hardships. Parents sacrificed sons, wives sacrificed husbands, and soldiers sacrificed their lives. Much of Europe had to endure under a constant atmosphere of death, loss, and other hardships, like food shortages, and military occupations. This suffering was an important element in Brittain’s definition of her generation. She wrote that if her fiancé had been of the postwar generation she could not have married him, because “a gulf wider than any decade divides those who experienced the War as adults...
The United States has been involved in many wars since its inception. WWII in particular had a significant impact on the world and the United States. Through the years 1939 to 1945 the majority of the world suffered many tragedies and hardships. In total, 50 million people died including women, children, civilians, and innocent bystanders. Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, was responsible for a significant amount of these deaths. Hitler, aligned with Japan, wanted to seize all of Europe and Japan wanted to conquer Asia. A major cause of WWII was that Germany strongly disapproved of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany especially didn’t like that they had to accept all the blame for WWI, paying $ 6,600 million for the damage they caused in WWI, and they were only allowed to have a small army and six naval ships, no tanks, no air force and no submarines were allowed. Also, the Rhineland area was to be de-militarized and taken out of Germany’s possession. All of these conditions were written in the Treaty of Versailles. During the war the world formed two sides, the Allies and the Axis Powers. The Allies included Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States, known as “the Big 3”. The Axis Powers included Germany, Italy, and Japan. At the end of the war the Allies were triumphant and the world gained its peace.
People of every generation remember key events, defining moments that shaped their lives. The Greatest Generation, or the generation directly involved with World War II, in their own sense, despite witnessing various other significant events in their lives, continuously refers to D-Day as a major historical checkpoint, perhaps a critical event that ultimately shaped the success of American diplomacy throughout the twentieth century. Modeled after Cornelius Ryan’s bestseller of the same title, the wildly ambitious the Longest Day captures D-Day’s best and worst moments, delivering an utterly compelling story through the efficient integration of an overarching panoramic view and individual anecdotes, transcribing intangible emotions into precise
Nationalism held a great honour in Europe around the 1800’s. They were representatives of the way people saw the world and resulted in important changes specifically in the industrialisation, during the French Revolution. The ideology of freedom leading to prosperity symbolised a significant shift, as before liberal ideas arose and individuals did not have freedom of any kind to decide what to do for oneself, and your rights protected from others and government policies. One was free to choose whatever profession within the bounds of not harming others. Nationalism has been a pivotal factor in almost every run for independence over cruelty, creating an identity of oneself with its nation through patriotism, but often has led to intense aggression
It is exactly one year since the Great War ended. It was a war in which so much was lost, and less was gained. The horrific memories of the war still haunt us to this day. There are many questions that are raised about the very existence of the Great War. The biggest question that remains is, was the war worth it?

My father passed away in 1991, two weeks before Christmas. I was 25 at the time but until then I had not grown up. I was still an ignorant youth that only cared about finding the next party. My role model was now gone, forcing me to reevaluate the direction my life was heading. I needed to reexamine some of the lessons he taught me through the years.
Have you ever thought of what it would be like if you were in a war? What it would be like to be hurt both physically, and emotionally. Well sadly this is what the war does to people. It severely damages them physically, and emotionally. If you died, your friends and family would be devastated but what you probably don’t understand is that if you had died in World War 1, your death would have been one in 12 million. This gives you an idea of the numbers of the dead. It also gives an insight into the devastation and sorrow that had befallen the families of the deceased. We all know that war should stop. War has to stop. War must stop.
