Exercise 7.5 Worksheet on Newell’s 1983 Model of the Integrative Process The problem of Interdisciplinary Studies for me is unemployment. Getting a job with a degree of (B.A) in Interdisciplinary Studies is a problem. My expectation is to become a teacher, which was my first major Education and English. Interdisciplinary Studies major does not show any specific area of study in which will be assigned in one’s certificate. In my country, government does not actual realize the Interdisciplinary Major. When teaching in my country, the system will require a teacher to have specific area of subject in which he or she teaches. So, the way to improve unemployment is to educators such as principles, teachers, and school committee or schools’
The presupposition of Preparing for a Career by Derek Bok indicates that vocational majors and liberal arts major should merge to help students prepare for their career. Bok states that vocational college only prepare students for the future, but does not teach students the basic knowledge such as U.S history, English, reading and how to think critically and understand what one’s learning. The three archetypes that exemplify what college should do to help students develop intellectual breadth and lifelong learning skills are to combine the vocational and the liberal arts majors together, give students opportunities to build connections in their major, and instructors should give student feedback about their work and what other employers
With the advent of the internet, technical schools, and computers in general, jobs today are more specialized than ever before, and they will continue to increase in particularity, thus a purely liberal arts curriculum is very untimely. Most people take four years to attain a bachelor’s degree of some kind and if they want a salary increase it requires at least two more years of graduate school before they can even think about entering the workplace. If people study only humanities for six of their most pivotal years of life, depending on their field of work, they may have a very small base of technical knowledge to utilize.
The goals and operational values of the cross-curricular approach are to help the student develop self-regulating (learning-how-to-learn and metacognition) and lifelong learning skills as well as effective democratic citizenship skills (Alahiotis & Stavlioti, 2006; Stavlioti, p. 61; Koustourakis, 2007 p.133; Vars, 2007, p.7). In order to cope with the modern realities, there is a need to move from the traditional organization of curriculum into discrete subjects/discipline areas offering fragmented knowledge, to a more linked and unified approach to knowledge in a holistic way (Alahiotis & Stavlioti, 2006; Marshall, 2005, p. 229). Conferring with psychology, the child should be treated as a whole entity so this should be reflected in the way children learn (stavlioti, p. 54; Stavlioti megalo, p. 4). Studies have shown that links between the different disciplines and connections with real-life situations enhance brain synapses, so in this way learning is promoted through multiple stimuli that these connections send to neurons (stavlioti megalo, p. 5-6). “According to Piaget (1963), learning occurs when new information is attached to prior knowledge and placed in existing conceptual compartments or schemata” (as cited in Marshall, 2005, p. 229).
Education in the humanities may bring a better outcome of understanding the process off everything that happens in our society. Students are able to learn more about the past cultures which is very beneficial for them. It does not only give them an idea of how the past was, but rather help’s them analyze what can be useful in their present. Students also have the capability of learning skills that will allow them to succeed in their future careers. All this learning comes from the aspect that humanities shows skills that students will
Process philosophy is known as the idea that everything is changing. Over the years, process philosophy has changed the way humans exist and go about their day to day lives. In order to fully grasp the concept of process philosophy we will first take a closer look at process philosophy, as a whole, its history, and the ideas behind this particular philosophy. Then we will discuss the effects process philosophy has had on marriage and family, followed by a brief commentary.
The employment landscape has changed dramatically over the past 30 years. Manufacturing jobs have fallen victim to outsourcing and automation Secondary education has grown unaffordable to the middle class and falls short of the scope of knowledge needed to step into skilled occupations, while taking a significant amount of time to complete. Unemployment is at 6.7 percent, while tech companies clamor for an increase in the cap for H1B Visas to bring in skilled workers from out of the country. Clearly there is a disconnect between our traditional educational institutions and American industry. Something needs to change, and that change needs to be revolutionary, not evolutionary. It is time to rebuild our secondary educational institutions from the ground up. It is time to focus on vocational learning to provide the workforce of the future, here at home.
Harvey Graff’s contributions are like Guillory’s except that his focusses on an earlier time than Guillory. This again provides context for the idea Clunes is discussing. In addition, however, Graff’s contribution provides a name to the model faux interdisciplinarity. This allows the issues Clune addresses to be easily targeted under one name. Graff is also cited to provide further insight into this topic through his idea that understanding is often achieved through engaging in interdisciplinary instruction. Outside of this article, Graff has a book titled Undisciplining Knowledge, which shows that he has taken the time to think about and research this topic, verifying him as a
The transtheoretical model is a model that theorizes the health behavior changes through a six phase process This paper will examine the stages of process of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. The stages of change are outlined with a period and tasks associated with steps forward through that stage (Kennedy, & Gregoire, 2009). This paper will further explore the framework of change influenced by the emergence of the transtheoretical model. Lastly, it will study the process of changes for clients as they go through each phase by examining challenges and interventions of each stage with focus on the Motivational therapy approach theory.
In conclusion, education is broader than just falling into what the contemporary school system has to offer. Both Gatto and Graff proved this by explain how conforming students to certain perspectives of education limits their potential in other educational branches that interest the students. Also, curricula should bring a balance between making a school a place for obtaining information, and accommodating the educational demands for each individual student. It is imperative to understand that reforming the academic system, by fine-tuning schools to have its students learn what exactly they are interested in, will lead to having students accessing their full intellectual potential.
Cadena, and Benjamin J. Keys titled Investment over the Business Cycle: Insights from College Major Choice, published by the Institute for the Study of Labor known as IZA, it was found that more unstable economy signs will result in major changes in both men and women to STEM majors and away from humanitarian majors (Blom, Cadena and Keys). According to the data they found, it can be estimated that for each increment in 1 percent in unemployment rate will stimulate 3.2 percent in men and 4.1 percent in women reallocating their major choices (Blom, Cadena and Keys). And with each 1 percent increment in unemployment rate, the finding also shows there is 0.6 percent increase in number of men majoring in engineering, 0.1 percent increase in computer science and natural science major (Blom, Cadena and Keys). Under the same condition, women tend to be more shifted towards business related major outside of finance by 0.6 percent; nursing, accounting, technical health fields and computer-related fields also see gains as well (Blom, Cadena and
Looking to the past it seems that curriculum became diluted. Schools offered many electives; schools even watered down the curriculum hoping to “keep” students (which was later found to only compound the problem) (Mclaughlin 1990). Curriculum resembled a lawn sprinkler covering a lot of area yet having very little force.
In recent years, much more attention has been paid to the college education. An Increasing number of people hold the opinion that college should give practical training that is beneficial for students ‘career instead of providing “generalist” education, such as science, literature, history, philosophy, art. From my point of view, broad range of knowledge courses is necessary and no one can deny the benefit of those courses.
Vladimir Zhrinovsky once said, “ The matter of International relations is very subtle and exquisite.” International Studies has always been my passion. Everything relies on the concept of helping others without expecting any kind of recognition. The major of International studies is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on major political, economic, social, and cultural issues that predominate in the international agenda. Being a Foreign Service Officer and an International Economist are positions that I aspire to achieve.
Before beginning my first semester here at Vanguard I often found myself questioning why I believe what I believe. I had a hard time understanding the bible and an even harder time finding answers to my questions. It was difficult for me to find the courage to ask questions because I didn’t want to come off as someone who didn’t know everything about the bible. Once I started my freshman year I began understanding that I am not alone, every one has questions or things that they don’t quite understand. Encountering The New Testament broke down parts of the bible and made it much easier for me to understand.
Education plays a very important role in a person’s life. Basic education is attained through primary school and high school. Education may be further perused after graduating from high school by attending university. This decision can make a person’s future brighter because, in most cases it is really hard to get a well-paid job and live a stable life without having a bachelor’s degree. However, people who want to peruse higher education must know that although there are similarities, there are also some differences between high school and university in terms of assignments, teachers, and responsibilities.
