Productivity in the Workplace
Current Workplace Environment
Although production needs are being met, improvements in productivity are always at the forefront of management’s thoughts. Doing more with less is a constant effort for middle management and hourly laborers. Over all the environment is comfortable, management and hourly employees interact well. There is a sense of “us versus them” mentality from the union to management but this is lower then has been observed at other manufacturing sights with in the company.
Issues Detrimental to Productivity
Management does not consistently include hourly employees in on decision making that directly affects them. This lowers productivity by not giving the employee a feeling of ownership/investment in the process. According to the Hawthorne Studies employees “enjoyed being the center of attention” meaning they improved performance (reacted positively) because they believed management cared about them. This has been termed as the “Hawthorne Effect”. (DuBrin, 2004, p.14).
The training program for both hourly and management has a vague over all structure but no substantive continuing contribution. Many different learning materials are available but are in disarray and are not standardized into closely related activates. This redund...

Supervisors are acting as trainers when implementing the formal orientation and OJT process. It is important that they thoroughly learn the content of the orientation process, as well as learn how to implement the process with new trainees. By implementing the Train-the-Trainer Model, Burgess is ensuring that each direct supervisor, receive the same training and have common KSA regarding the support and preparation of new employees. She increases the likelihood or consistency for the job site training offered each need employee. Additionally, with Train-the-Trainer model, direct supervisors can understand their roles in the process and it further increases their accountability regarding the success of new hires at their
The factory workers are stuck in a complicated position where they are taken advantage of and exploited. While “exploitation occurs on any level” these factory workers do not have the opportunity to exploit others because they are the ones being exploited (Timmerman 7). Tension is created between the corporations, factory owners and workers, because the factory owners force the workers into harsh labor and intense working conditions that they were told
In 1800s, the industrial revolution spread across the United States, which significantly change the way of manufacturing and labor society function. More and more Europeans were transferred to America, which increased the population of America. In addition, the larger transportation and communication made the old type of labor conventions and household manufactory became outdated. At that time, the “Artisan Republicanism” was extraordinary popular in the United States, people work depended on their workmanships, and people were also able to be their own boss on the job. However, factory based workplaces replaced the traditional patterns of work, which significantly increased the efficiency of manufactory industry, but on the other hand, labors met big problem, not only on the status of a master in their field, but also on the lower wages and longer working hours. American workers found that they had become “wage slaves”. In response of these changes, laborers started protesting the new revolution, resisted changes of older traditions of work,

Organizations face massive challenges in attracting and retaining a high-quality and productive workforce. Companies are continually looking for new ways to keep their employees satisfied at all levels in order to harness greater productivity and ideas from people while keeping them motivated and happy. One real challenge examined earlier is the need to transform General Motors to be a much more productive and fully utilized organization by examining the hourly workforce. This is a great change from the traditional "us versus them" mentality of the past between management and the union.
The last bolt is screwed on as a relieved automotive worker marvels at his wondrous creation: a car. With the roar of an engine, the car slowly disappears into the distance. The worker gradually turns around, picks up his tools, and continues to work on a new car. As a consumer, we rarely wonder how things are made; we simply take everything we own for granted. For once, have you wondered how many hours of hard labor many automotive workers must go through? The automotive industry has been around for many years, but it has not always been as efficient as it currently is. As the industry continues to evolve, many new innovative ideas are still being developed. In the past, automotive workers have had to work in harsh conditions without much security or job benefits. Nevertheless, through the continuous development of organized collective bargaining, workers are being treated as they should be. Being the largest automobile manufacturer in the world, General Motors Corporation has been greatly affected by the needs of their workers. Rick Wagoner, CEO of General Motors, is currently in charge of “running the show” at GM. Being the most successful automotive company since 1931, it is obvious that he not only has to satisfy customers, but also the workers within the company. From the smallest things such as a work raise to bigger things such as the working condition, the management of General Motors has been pressured to make both positive and negative changes to the way the company is run as a whole in order to satisfy the workers who are part of the UAW Union. Therefore, the formation and development of unions encompasses both pros and cons.
John sits at home each night with his wife and two children and watches the news. He listens as experts on the economy tell him that the economy is growing and that the GDP is growing. He wonders how this can be, because he lost his job months ago and has not been able to find work since. Has the very country that John lives in moved on and left him behind? This is the question that many Americans are asking themselves, and many more will be soon. In the 1960s and early 90s productivity in America increased by record amounts. The nation was prospering, people had jobs, and they were spending their money. All of this was done by simple government intervention. Now America is looking at another rise in productivity, but this time it may be a little bit different unless the government takes the proper steps.

This management structure where “everyone does everything”, obviously create an ideal learning environment, “one in which people have an engaging experience on a daily basis”. While it permits speed in decision making since approvals are not required from the top management, they can also prove to be inefficient and costly at times. Not only does the employe...
Everybody in the world need to work to earn money. We can find that there are different jobs have different relationships between the employers and their employees. Most of the workers find that there are some necessary pacification that job should have. Producing goods or services are dictated not by employees but by their employers. If profits exist, employers are the ones that benefit more so than the regular worker. “Even when working people experience absolute gains in their standard of living, their position, relative to that of capitalists, deteriorates.” (Rinehart, Pg. 14). The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Hard work wears down the employee leaving them frustrated in their spare time. Workers are estranged from the products they produce. At the end of the day, they get paid for a day’s work but they have no control over the final product that was produced or sold. To them, productivity does not equal satisfaction. The products are left behind for the employer to sell and make a profit. In discussions with many relatives and friends that have worked on an assembly line, they knew they would not be ...
The book I chose to read is Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity by David Allen. David Allen is considered by Forbes Magazine to be in the top five executive coaches in the United States. He has over thirty years of experience in coaching some of the highest ranking executives in some of the biggest businesses in the United States. Time Magazine called this book, “the defining self-help business book of it’s time."
Employees today are bombarded with so many tasks that they become inefficient. When given so many projects to finish, people are compelled to multitask because of their workload that keeps piling up. Companies should remind the managers to only give employees a manageable workload or only one project at a time. If they did this, they would find their employees to be more productive. Also, employees should be encouraged to take breaks away from their workspace. If they take their break say at their desk, then they will be more tempted to use the phone or send emails, when they should be relaxing. Managers should also provide their employees with the correct time management skills. When employees lack the skill of time managements, they often make up their lost time with multitasking, which leads in low quality work. Overall, have a more organized and relaxed employee will create a more productive
Educational productivity is the improvement of students outcomes with little or no additional financial resources, or a consistent level of student performance at a lower level of spending. Educational productivity is based on effectiveness. This is the linkage between student outcomes and the level and use of finacial resources in the schools. Production functions are concerned with how money is related to student learning and lifetime earnings. Other approaches are cost functions, data envelopment, and the impact of smaller class size on the student learning. Although there has been extensive research about educational productive functions, there are still many disagreement among researchers as to whether or not a statistical link can be found between student outcomes and money. However, it is agreed upon that the single largest expendidture in the public school system is teacher expenditure.
