Working Fire by Zach Unger

The book that I read was entitled working fire and the author is Zach

Unger. I thought this book was a very good book. Everything in it

seemed very real and you could picture everything that was happening

in the book.

The first chapter in the book is pretty much the present but the end

of the chapter leaves you wondering what is going to happen. In the

beginning of this chapter Zach is talking about his life at the fire

station and also is talking about confirming stills. The confirming

stills mean that there is a fire and that the fire is a real working

fire. Zach is also talking about some of the guys that are on the

department with him. One guy that he talks about is Jack Alvarez and

he notices that Jack crosses himself and kisses his wedding ring on

the way to the fire. After seeing this Zach tells himself that he

needs to make up his own ritual that he can do before running into a

burning building. They get to the fire and a mother hands Zach her

baby to hold onto but he really can't because his hands are full with

an axe and hose. Zach then takes the baby to the ambulance and then

Zach goes back to the fire and the chapter is over.

Chapter two goes back to the past. This chapter is talking about the

tower. The tower is the training center where potential firemen will

be training for four months. In this chapter Zach has just arrived at

the training center with his new girlfriend Shona. Zach talks about

how he met Shona at a dinner party two months prior to starting fire

academy. Then Zach starts talking about his childhood a little bit.

Shona and him walk up to the top of the tower and Shona as...

... middle of paper ...

...hat is involved, and overall helping

people that are in need.

I think that this book gives a very good portrayal of firefighters.

The things that Zach talks about such as the jokes and teamwork that

are involved in firefighting I have seen by doing ride time at paid

departments and also by being a part of a volunteer department. By

reading this book it makes me want to get on a paid department that

much more. Everything that he is talking about in this book I can

picture in my head and see what is going on and how great it would be.

Some of the people in the fire house were pretty helpful to Zach and

taught him a lot of new things that will help him in his firefighting

career. Overall I thought that this was a very interesting book, very

realistic, and a good eye opener to people who are going to be

firefighters.
