I dont think workers who receive tips should be paid the same minimum wage as other employess who's jobs does not see the light of tips. First, every job comes with challenges and difficulties so to exclude one group of workers and give them tips creates inbalance in the workforce. Next not all customers can afford tips all the time due to unforseen financial forces. Though some people feel workers that are tipped should further be accrded the minumum wage, I strongly oppose the idea.
First, the notion that some jobs are difficult than others go a long way in creating inbalance between workers who are tipped and those jobs that promises no tips. Every job comes with it's own challenges. Example, a manger of a contruction firm equally works harder compared to the workers on the contruction sites. They both form integral parts of the company and one can not function without the other. One has to go to the contruction site to get the job done, while the other has to manage the company so as it can win contracts where necessary, and to see to the daily activities of the company. To this effect, both fields and positions are equally important.

A customer who pays tips regularly might not be able to pay their tips within a given time where they may be faced with financial difficulties. Example may be a cutomer who has to pay so much to get his/her car fixed, pay unxpected bills, or even lose thier jobs. In an atmosphere where tipping is a tradition, this customer might rather choose a different place for businnes, where he/she would not have to pay tips after paying for services. Server minimum wage should be raised because tips are too inconsistent of a payment option for people to be able to live off of comfortably. In most states the server minimum wage is only two dollars and thirteen cents. (Obringer) That amount is not nearly enough on days where the tips may be particularly low. The idea of tipping has always been normal to myself, as I was a kid and still now I see my parents leaving tips for the waiter/waitress when we go out to eat. It never occurred to me until I got older that it was hard for these workers to get by as their salary depended upon their tips. Once I read Saru Jayaraman’s article on “Why Tipping is Wrong” I was unsure of what I was getting myself into. However, it brought light and told how we should be getting rid of tips and giving the workers a fair and decent salary.
Minimum wage is a topic that has been popping up since the 1980s. From whether we should lower it, or even raise it, but now in the 2000s minimum wage has been the center of attention more than ever. There are two sides to this topic of minimum wage; whether it creates more jobs or does not create jobs. Those who argue that raising minimum wage will create more jobs will have a rebuttal which is that it does not only cause the loss of jobs but that it would make things much worse and vice versa for those arguing raising minimum wage will cause loss of jobs. There will be two authors representing opposite views, Nicholas Johnson supporting minimum wage will not cost jobs with his article “ Evidence Shows Raising Minimum Wage Hasn’t Cost Jobs”
The main reason for this is the existence of the tipped minimum wage, which since 1991 has stayed set at $2.13 per hour. Not many people even realize that the tipped minimum wage exists, but according to the DOL, servers in 43 states get paid less than the regular minimum wage hourly based on the assumption that the rest of their wages will come from customer tips. In fact, 22 states pay their tipped workers less than $3 per hour.
Let’s be honest, we all have faced the dilemma of what is the right thing to do when it comes down to tipping. Should I tip or not? If yes, how much? Did I tip less or more? Was I better off not tipping at all? This dilemma ends up creating an aloof relationship between a consumer and a service provider. Not only that, but tipping in itself is a wrong approach to show gratitude for the service provided because more often than not, “sense of guilt” comes into play since we are bounded by the social norms for tipping. Tipping should be abolished from the society because tipping doesn’t reflect the quality of service provided, it hinders social relationship, and furthermore it encourages tax evasion.
Tips are generally a small amount of money given to a person as gratitude for a service that has been provided. There are many times throughout our everyday lives in which we are put in a position to leave a gratuity. Whether it be dining at a restaurant, getting your hair cut at the salon, or having a few drinks with friends at a bar. In each case there was a service provided to you, now you have a decision to make, how much of a tip is considered acceptable and should you tip everyone that provides a service to you? There are many guidelines for consumers to follow. With modern technology there are convenient tip calculators available as features on most new cellular phones. When deciding on the tip amount the service is one of the major determining factors along with whether or not you plan on visiting the establishment again , and how the tip will play a role in your further dealings with said business. Michael Lewis explores a few interesting reasons why tipping is getting out of hand in a recent essay. I strongly agree with many points and examples he provides.

Of course with most of them wanting to quit their jobs but know they can’t because no one else will hire them. The minimum wage being too low has been a public issue in America for generations. Basically, the debate includes two different opinions. Firstly, people who want to raise the minimum wage, and second, people who would rather is stay the same. The overwhelming majority of liberals are on the side that favors a raise. The average customers in a restaurant fall under the “Stick-to-the-fifteen-percent, tippers.” They have the attitude of “I’m just here for the food.” These average customers can be heard saying, “Looks good, I just need ketchup.” and “When you get a chance, may I please have a refill?” The “Stick-to-the-fifteen- percent tippers” have a more serious, laid-back face and stay quiet.
