Work Experience Report I had accepted to do two weeks of work experience at the Boots Pharmacy, as a shop floor sales assistant. To be honest, I had no idea what the firm manufactured or the type of work involved. I woke up on a Monday morning, prepared and organized, which was incredibly unusual. I was extremely enthusiastic about the prospect of working. As I sat on the H91 bus with my mp3 music player on, questions kept coming across my head like, 'what will it be like?' And 'what will people think of me?' I wasn't really anxious but more excited. I reached at the pharmacy 20 minutes early. As I strolled through the automatic doors, it was deserted, so I walked past the half stocked shelves and noticed a comparatively old lady. I said, "hi, my name is Gagandeep and I'm here for work experience" she looked at me maliciously, and replied "hello, my name is Susana, just follow me". She seemed very peculiar because it seemed like she was spying on me. She took me through the back of the shop to the cashier room. It gave me an insight on how a shop looks behind the closed doors, it wasn't particularly beautiful but I got to see where all the stock is kept. It's in a massive room. After about five minutes of waiting the store manager arrived her name was Nina, she was Indian and in her mid thirties. She took me took her office, which was very luxury. She seemed a gracious person who made me feel welcome by telling me about the firm and then asking about life in general. After the general conversation, I had to fill in a form to say that I was an unpaid worker. I didn't really mind at that time that I wouldn't receive any wages ... ... middle of paper ... ...job if you want it", I replied, " I'll think about it". Nina then handed me a white envelope, I wasted no time and opened it straight away. I just couldn't believe it, it had £50 in it and I just can't describe the emotion I went through that moment. I walked out of the doors knowing I could return. I had been at work experience for two weeks and I did have some tedious jobs. But I knew it would be difficult to adapt to school life again. I contemplated how it must be like for someone to leave a job after twenty years. At work I was being treated as an adult and I knew I would have to put up with being treated as a child in school. I think I was one of the luckier students on work experience because, as far as being in pleasing surroundings and working with pleasant people, someone was always making sure I was happy.

It takes one person to change the trajectory of another person’s life. During my work experience I dealt with instances where my ethics, empathy, and professionalism guided me when handling patient’s problems. For example, a patient’s, (I will call Tom) MRI results showed a congenital anomaly in his brain. As a result, Tom required a consult with a brain specialist. Unfortunately, Tom recently aged out of the foster care system; and was lacking insurance coverage; the financial means; and supports for medical treatment. To clarify, my task of notifying the patient was completed, but I felt compelled to further aid Tom by securing a brain consult for him. After days of phone calls, I learned Tampa General Hospital provides medical services to the indigent and they agreed to see Tom. For this purpose, I advised Tom to go to Tampa General, nonetheless he was resistant. Next, I persisted by calling Tom every day until he relented by admitting himself to the hospital. The coffee shop I decided to do my observation was the well known Starbucks just a couple blocks away. The reason I chose this coffee shop was because of it 's style inside, it attracted me. For example, one side of the wall has a glass top, and the lower part of the wall, made of wood and painted in a bright red color, which was one thing that attracted me and stood out. Outside of the shop people can actually see through the glass wall and get to see what’s happening inside of the coffeeshop. By the entrance you see these two red ceiling lamps which were shaped in a flower bud and these two tall green plants. Once you were in, on the right of the shop there was a counter with food and things to put in your drinks such as milk, sugar, chocolate, etc and the colors and how the food was displayed and served was appealing to my eyes. Behind that counter there was a long table with different electronic devices plugged into the wall. On the middle of the those there is a fridge just for ice and when I turned to the other side and I noticed a big menu on the wall. Further more into the shop, there was an area filled with tables, chairs, and sofas. The tables were in different shapes, one was round and the others rectangular, also there was four bamboo baskets and I looked around and noticed that the walls in that area were decorated with paintings.

The Value of Work Experience A summer or part-time job pays more than money. Even though the money earned is important, the work experience gained has a greater long-term value when one applies for a full-time job after graduation from school. Job application documents (the application blank and the personal data sheet) ask you to list jobs you have held and to list as references the names of individuals who supervised your work. Around the age of seven I started going to first grade so my parents’ focus went all on that. Everyday I could hear my mom screaming be careful and especially she would say, “don’t take candy from strangers” which was getting annoying day by day. The idea of values started when I was going to school because before that I was at home and even when I wasn’t, I was still with my parents. The reason why they cared so much was because I was their only child and they wanted me to learn everything and be smart about whatever that was happening around me. When it was around their grade, I started to be a part of a concrete operational stage, and started to think logically about the world around me. One of my favorite subjects in school was mathematics.
