Towards the Ability for Referees to Withdraw Incorrect Calls In Sports
In the world of sports, referees play a crucial role and can dictate a team or a player’s fate as they make the important decisions in the games. Referees are human, and just like any other ordinary human, make mistakes and it is completely understandable, but mistakes can be really major sometimes and can really ruin a team or player’s reputation or even the chances for them to win a major league, important game or even a big competition. In the duration of this essay there will be 3 important supporting facts of which one explains who a referee is, what his/her job is and the amount of power and control they have during a game. The second detail consists of a scenario

On April 13th 2016 the second leg of the Champions League quarter finals and were played between 2015 Champions League winners FC Barcelona and spanish rivals Atletico Madrid. As this was a second leg, the score was already partially decided as Barcelona had taken the lead 2-1. Early in the game Atletico Madrid drew the aggregate 2-2. Around the 83rd minute Atletico Madrid were awarded a penalty due to a handball in FC Barcelona’s box. After that, FC Barcelona were trailing 3-2. On the 93rd minute, Atletico defender Diego Godin committed a handball in the Atletico box, but the referee made a controversial decision by not awarding a penalty to FC Barcelona which if scored, would have sent the game to extra time. The referee, Nicola Rizzoli later on did admit that he had made a huge mistake, and that the decision had hurt Barcelona. The referee also did say that he was tricked (Mazariegos, 2016) by the Atletico players who told him that the handball had not occurred in the box, but outside which resulted in a free kick which was narrowly missed by Lionel Messi. This decision however, did ruin Barcelona’s current reputation as winners, and ruined their chances of winning the treble which only a small amount of teams has won as it is extremely difficult to achieve. A treble is won when a team wins their respective country’s league and cup and also wins the …show more content…
Well, a referee is someone who makes specific decisions and calls fouls on people. They can also be referred to as technical official, ref, umpire, linesman and many many more. A referee’s job is to keep order in matches in various sports, including basketball, soccer, football (American) and all other competitive sports. They can dictate things that vary from fouls to disqualifications in other sports. In many sports, it is known very well that the referee has final call no matter what happens. Even though there can be assistant referees who help, the main referee always makes the final call and always has the most power. If a player or coach in a team argues and aggravates or assaults the referee, it is legal for the referee to suspend him/her temporarily permanently. Since they have all this power, they can dictate games in a second with crushing calls that can ruin a team or player’s reputation permanently. An example of this would be in soccer when a referee gives a player a red card for a physical or verbal action and can contain as long a ban as the referee decides, and can later be extended if the leading organization decides. This occurred in the 2014 world cup in Brazil when Luis Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder and was immediately handed a red card but was not suspended for too long. However, FIFA looked over the incident again and Luis Suarez’s ban was extended to 4 months without doing any playing at a

Right now in America, the world of sports is constantly changing and growing to make the sports safer and fairer. People want sports to be as exciting and thrilling as before, but without the human error that may turn some baseball fans away. Along with this fear, people also want every sport to be as fair as possible, and by doing this most sports have incorporated an instant replay rule. This spring will be the first that the review rule will be in effect, it is a radical decision and game changing because baseballs history is so rich and its structured has not been changed in so long. These changes are not without skepticism though because people believe that the game has been so successful and before being “fair” was not the biggest priority of the game. By adding this rule, baseball’s fairness will be protected in a way it was not previously, but this set of rules is not without skepticism by people who believe there is nothing wrong with the game now.
However, the NBA example fails to make even this point. To see why, imagine that you have been asked to preside as a judge at a track-and-field event.
In the essay (It is Immoral watching the Super Bowl) the author 's argument was very effective. Steve stated his point of views very clearly to the viewers to understand and the reasons football is immoral to watch. Almond 's reasons for writing this article is to persuade people on the immorality of football and the negative effect it has on a player, while playing or after they had played it. In this article, Almond also provided some basic facts and details about what football does to the human body. Moreover, Almond stated that medical research had proven that football can cause serious brain injury. The author was also opened minded, knowledgeable and confident. Base on the other ways of presenting this argument, I have been convinced by his argument and I am going to
III. Thesis/Argument: In order to decrease the occurrence of concussions, stricter rules need to be applied in all levels of football.
In regards to referees calling the games inconsistently, they pledged to do their best to try and stay consistent. We can’t totally blame the referees because they have to throw the flag for what they see, but the foul is reviewable and can be overturned. It would help them out tremendously if players did not lead with their heads. They don 't want to call the penalties but they definitely will if they have to. They are just trying to do their part and help keep the game

His statement that “winning is the only thing that matters in sport”, is one of the truths that is still inherent in today’s world of sports. Athletes are willing to cheat to guarantee success, either through the use of performance-enhancing drugs, or through the act of injuring others. These days, drugs, blood doping, corruption, injuring others and the consequences of winning and more importantly losing is all evident. Lombardi’s statement is not only applicable to athletes, but it also applies to the countries that the athletes are representing. Events such as the Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey, are a source of national pride and some countries are willing, and fully wanting to try and do anything to bring prestige back, many of them resorting to unethical tactics. Lombardi’s statement does not only affect players, or athletes, it also affects coaches, owners, and managers. They too place winning as their number one concern. In many cases, fair play generally takes a back seat to the desire for winning. The truth of the matter is that, some will bend rules, while others will outright cheat. The corruptness of sports today has lead to the endless methods and desires of unethical behaviour.

A deontological approach can be used here as the issue is based on the idea of fairness. The right thing to do here is to punish Rory for his actions address the issue of positive deviance in athletes. Positive deviance refers to the rejection of norms in sport by coaches and athletes. Hughes and Coakley (1991) explore this issue and found that athletes do not believe they are overconforming to the sport, but are rather confirming their identity as members of the team they represent. In this example, Rory is deviating from the norms of soccer by diving, an unethical practice that he thinks will help his team to victory. As a young member of the team, Rory may have felt the pressure to perform and sacrifice himself for the group and Hughes and Coakley (1991) hypothesize that these behaviours are most common in athletes that overconform in sport. The appropriate punishment for Rory in this situation would be to give him a yellow card for misconduct, potentially fine him for his actions and suspend him. This type of policy shows the teams that the league does not condone this type of behavior and that the game needs to be played fairly and in the right

Money made the world change, both in socially and economically. From sports to politics, money has impacted our lives in any way. The question for my research is: how money changes soccer from the 90s to the present? I will divide my essay in three parts: sport, political and social. I think that money helped the sport to grow, but at the same time the corruption grew. I am sure that I can do an in-depth analysis about it. The only thing I see on television is soccer, no matter what country or what team is playing I enjoy it. I am not a person who reads much, but most of the books that I have read are about soccer’s history. My family is passionate to soccer, so I'm used to hear stories of how was the soccer before compared to now. In fact, I think that I have the knowledge to write an essay regarding on the comparison of soccer’s history and how money change the sport.
