In the essay (It is Immoral watching the Super Bowl) the author 's argument was very effective. Steve stated his point of views very clearly to the viewers to understand and the reasons football is immoral to watch. Almond 's reasons for writing this article is to persuade people on the immorality of football and the negative effect it has on a player, while playing or after they had played it. In this article, Almond also provided some basic facts and details about what football does to the human body. Moreover, Almond stated that medical research had proven that football can cause serious brain injury. The author was also opened minded, knowledgeable and confident. Base on the other ways of presenting this argument, I have been convinced by his argument and I am going to …show more content…
As a child, Almond was so in love with football until the accident that took place in 1978, doing the pre-season game, when the wide receiver for the New England Patriots name Stingley lost his balance, while lunging for a pass and got hit by Tatum, an Oakland Raiders. After getting hit really hard Stingley fell on the field. This whole scene was sad and it causes the audience to respond emotionally. For Example, when the team doctors rush on the field to rescue Darryl Stingley, he was not able to shake or move his body. Those who came to his rescue, begin to use reflex hammers on his knees while he lying down on the field. The longer Stingley lay on the ground the more embarrassed and guilty shame Tatum fan made of him. Even the fan knew that the interest or pleasure of American football was all about the feeling and excited of such hurt, damage transactions of football. On the other hand, Jack Tatum and his fan were happy and satisfy that he had caused damage and harm to Stingley while protecting the area or space to central his mystique position. His feeling and commitment to such played was flashy with
Football is one of the most popular sports in the United States, and it’s viewed as the most exciting and intriguing American sport. Many football players have highly affected the lives of their fans; they are looked upon as role models and they are admired and worshiped by many. Football’s biggest event, the Super Bowl, brings in many viewers each year. Football attracts many people of all age groups and its widely played in high schools, colleges, and professionally. It seems like any normal sport—but is it safe?
The NFL position in this article makes them look very greedy and indifferent about the overall health of their football players. One of the ethical perspectives that can be used to analyze the NFL's position in this article is deontology. Deontology is the perspective where rules is the defining factor for ethical decisions. From the deontology perspective it makes it seem that the NFL has decided not to follow the rules and even blurred the lines as to what potential injuries their players can get. They wanted their injured players to play without having to follow through the with proper procedure in verifying that the players are in conditions healthy enough to play. It looks as if the NFL cares only about bringing in money and not care about
With that being said, we begin to notice the comparison between both dogfighting and football. This was shown by using a system called “HITS, in which six sensors are placed inside the helmet of every player on the field, measuring the force and location of every blow he receives to the head” (Gladwell 56). The HITS system helped to conclude that practice can be just as dangerous as the games. With this being said, football is an overall reckless style of play that can continually cause brain injury. Not just football but both of these high intensity sports are viewed as damaging to one 's body both physically and mentally. Because of this, if people consider dogfighting to be unjust, illegal, and abusive then they should believe football to have the same damaging effects. Unfortunately, there is such a high demand for football, because of all the money it brings. Because of this, scientist and doctors will ignore the realistic facts and continue to allow people to participate in this
The Odessa football players couldn't be objective about criticisms of football. Their total self-esteem depended on how they did on Friday night. This was the glorified culmination of their football career: wearing the black MoJo uniform in the stadium under the big lights. Football was more than just a game to them; it was a religion. It "made them seem like boys going off to fight a war for the benefit of someone else, unwitting sacrifices to a strange and powerful god" (Bissinger, p.11). Because football was so meaningful in their lives, to criticize it was to criticize everything they'd worked so hard for and lived for.
A parents worst fear is to have something tradgic happen to their child, especially if it was something that was caused by a sport, such as football. “Don’t Let Kids Play Football” is an article that is warning parents and children about the dangers of playing high contact sports. In the article published in The New York Times, Dr. Bennet Omalu, a physician who diagnosed CTE shares research that shows the long term effects of high impact sports and discusses the possibilities of brain damage. ”Don’t Let Kids Play Football” is rhetorically persuasive because Dr. Omalu uses moral duty to appeal to audience’s emotions and uses evidence to support the research on CTE.
The author's purpose has certainly been achieved, as his arguments are logical and objective. He builds his arguments through verifiable evidence, that primarily involves reference of other literary works or people, in order to draw out a logical conclusion. His arguments has persuaded me into thinking that cheating has not only been widespread and accepted in America but it has also penetrated into Canada. I am able to support my opinion since I myself have experienced foul play at my regional soccer games. Moreover, the final sentence of the essay where the author mocks Pooley for believing "sports should not be immoral rather it should be fun" creates a balanced persuasive effect with a bit of sarcasm.
Are young children putting their health and even their lives at risk if they partake in the sport of football? Some claim that the American sport is far too dangerous and the risk of concussions and injuries far outway the pros of the physical sport, while others insist that technological improvements and new regulations have made the sport safer. Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor of history and education at New York University, argues in his paper, “We Must Stop Risking the Health of Young Football Players,” that football is a sport that is too dangerous for the youth. He states his belief that technological improvements in helmets and changes in the rules of the sport have had little effect on reducing injuries and that nothing has worked.
In Daniel Flynn’s essay “Football Does a Body Good,” he states his point of view on football and the way people should see it. Football is a dangerous sport that has caused many types of head injuries concussions and other health problems throughout the years. This popular sport has caused many players to develop diseases later on in life, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE, Alzheimer 's, and Dementia. One of the NFL’s most pressing issues is concussions, which can have life-changing health effects on the football players.
“Football’s Endgame: What would happen if America’s Pastime just...died” is the title that had heads turning when it made its way onto Sports Illustrated. Football is the United State’s favorite sport so an article like this one was sure to shock fans. The article was written to be set ten years from now when the game of football met its death. Giving the ongoing issues surrounding the game in 2016, the author Austin Murphy dated the article September 7,2036. In this article Murphy talks about the factors that led to the end of one of the U.S’s beloved sports. Factors like the AIG not protecting athletes against head injuries in the NFL, Pop Warner settling a death with the family of a former football player who committed suicide at the age of 25 from CTE caused by hits to the head, and the 10% rise in football concussions. A woman whose son had passed away from a motorcycle accident noticed changes in her boy. Playing football for almost a decade he was bound to get hurt, but it was after his death that doctors found he had CTE. CTE is a topic of discussion in this article. Sports Illustrated works to inform everyone about CTE and its effects on the mind. This disease targets the way a person thinks and changes their moods, “He had all these [football-related] problems with his knees and back, but his brain was
III. Thesis/Argument: In order to decrease the occurrence of concussions, stricter rules need to be applied in all levels of football.
From long practice hours, hot summer workouts, and many Friday nights, my personal observation of this dangerous sport is exceptionally prevalent. My initial experience of the damage that football brings came my eighth grade year when I witnessed a senior football player on my team try and eat a phone on the ride home after receiving a concussion in the third quarter of the game. Which is a prime example to defend the fact that football related injuries to the head result in people not “being all there.” Not only have I seen someone try and eat a phone, but I have also witnessed head injuries resulting in my own friend randomly yelling at me after a game for no reason, and also a friend trying to jump down a full flight of stairs thinking he was starring in a movie. The fast paced, high intensity contact that comes with playing football is nothing to think flippantly of when it plays a role on brain trauma, and the results of brain trauma.
In the world of sport, soccer and football with respect to demographic has had numerous controversies. Although both sport are known famously around the globe, for many years fans from both sides are known for asking, is American football same as soccer? What’s the time limit on both sports? What’s the game objective? Do they use the same ball? However they both have similarities and differences which I will be talking about in this essay.
In the modern day United States the sport American football has become not only entertainment but also a tradition whether it’s watching the BCS college championship or watching the super bowl with the family. The sport of American football is unique to the United States and has grown and became iconic over the years and has become a part of many Americans lives. American Football was made in 1869 and was modeled after the sport of rugby. They took the basics of rugby and changed it to make it fit better for them. The game has changed over the years but it also affected many Americans as the tradition of Monday Night football has begun. The game has had problems with the United States government as it was said to be too dangerous to play, this lead to an upgrade in the equipment and they tried very hard to make the equipment well ensuring player safety throughout the sport.
Sisson effectively gets his argument about drugs in sports across by correctly using Aristotle’s ethos, pathos and logos. Sisson gains the audiences trust by telling them about his past history in the field of drugs in sports. Then he tells personal stores and gives examples on how athletes are treated unfair to make the audience feel that the people that are in charge are at fault not the athletes. Sisson has reached his goal about getting the argument out the public effectively and get his audience to question the next breaking news story about athletes supposedly caught taking drugs to enhance performance.
