“Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve now arrived to the most crucial moment of this event. And the winner goes to… The Red Team!” This announcement was followed by a great applause. The champion, of course, was filled with triumph, too occupied in receiving congratulatory wishes. The non-winners, on the other hand, were beaming at the champion with admiration, while having ‘better luck next time” looks on their faces. Each of the non-winners may come from different backgrounds but all of them have a unified purpose that is winning. In the passage, “Winning isn’t Everything” by Peter Hamill (1983, p.25), it indicates that wining is not the most important aspect in a game and losing is not something to be ashamed of. However, after reading this passage, I could not bring myself to fully agree with Hamill’s thoughts. After all, winning is everybody’s utmost priority.
Everyone loves to win. According to Hamill’s passage (1983, p 26), it points out that the loss of Joe Frazier to Muhammad Ali in the boxing ring was an incident that Frazier should be proud of because Frazier’s loss had turned Ali into the legend in the boxing ring. Hamill intended to show that winning is not everything; losing can also be an honorable act. However, I disagree with this statement because Frazier did not lose deliberately just to raise Ali’s fame. Both of them came to the tournament to win but not to lose. Hamill’s statement will most probably be an insult to both of the boxers, especially Frazier, as the desire to win is innate in every human. The triumph of defeating the opponent is indeed satisfying and euphoric. Under normal circumstances, humans will use everything (some may cheat) just to achieve success without considering how weak they are because winnin...

...e desire to win, as the yearning to win is always innate in every human. I appreciate Hamill’s efforts to convince the readers that winning is not everything, but his efforts to reduce the value of winning may discourage the readers to be less determined and competitive. Hence, in my opinion, winning is everybody’s utmost priority as it motivates the winners to do their best and to complete the whole game. Hamill’s points are right, but I still unable to fully accept his opinions after I had finished reading this passage. After all, a saying by Vince Lombardi goes “Winning is not everything, but wanting to win is.”

In the moment neither of these feelings are amazing but in “Competition Makes a Comeback”, Caitlin Snaring shares that this was actually results in an outcome that is well worth it: “‘Losing made me want to win even more… got me fired up’ to win the 2007 contest.” (Kronholz 18). Because Caitlin felt upset after being eliminated at a 2006 geography bee, she realized that she didn’t want to feel like this again, and the only way for that to happen is to push even harder to reach goals. Without failure against others people assume they are the best or they are just a natural winner so they don’t need to try. This mindset automatically sets society up for failure, because with everyone just sitting back waiting for a trophy to be handed to them for anything and everything nothing would get done, and there is no way for everyone in a society to all win one way. Just imagine a computer engineer thinking they can release a computer that is only a small percent finished just because people loved their last

If we did not fail or lose how could we learn to value or appreciate success/winning? What would we work towards, strive for or struggle with if we won all the time? What would motivate or drive us to do better or want better for ourselves if there was no concept of competition? If we are only recognized for attendance or participation because there is nothing beyond what’s actually handed to us, then all of society would come to a screeching halt. It goes beyond childhood, we are shaping the society for the future
Every kid on the football field has a trophy. Even the kids who are on the losing team. Kids’ and parents’ faces are bright with smiles, and laughter echoes throughout the field. Kids are showing off their miny trophies, each with a bronze football on them. No one is paying attention to the two feet tall, gold, first place trophy that is in the winning team’s coach’s hand. Everybody is focused on the miniature trophies. Why are these trophies so special? These are participation trophies. Every kid gets one just for participatcuing in a game. Kids started getting participation trophies in the 20th Century. They got the trophies to feel more confident about themselves. Trophies should not be given to every kid because of narcissism increase,

Furthermore, keeping the players grounded in life will probably leave them with more success than a win ever would. “I Believe in the Also-Rans” starts off with the dad talking about how he used to thrive in school, but after leaving university and entering the workplace he starts to fail more and more, cultivating his newfound idea that “there must be more to life than winning, which is an idea that was also present in “A Baseball School for Big-League Dreamers.” He also says this idea wasn’t entirely prevalent until he became a father. These thoughts perfectly set up how the rest of the text and its meaning is concerned. When I was younger, I was very competitive, I’ll admit, but playing whatever game I was playing, having fun and making memories with my friends was more important than any victory granting me a piece of candy

I chose to discuss why competition is a good thing and how it makes sports and other aspects, even in everyday life, better. I will focus on key points such as the difference between being successful and not being successful based on competition and will power along with a drive and goals. I will also talk about how genetics of a winner and how natural selection plays a factor in determining a worthy competitor. I will point out some of the main reasons for competition in both sports and life. I can give you my personal experience because I am extremely competitive and I support competition and the growth it produces.
When competing in a sport, the performance of the athlete can be compromised if he or she doesn’t maintain a healthy lifestyle. While staying physically fit and exercising are important in any athlete’s daily routine, there are other factors to determine a “healthy” lifestyle. Similarly, an athlete should practice good sportsmanship while competing. Respect for a fellow athlete is the root of every great athlete. In order to perform well at any sport, an athlete has to enjoy the game. Take soccer for instance, if a soccer player does not enjoy playing soccer, then it will be significantly harder to perform at his or her best. Along with enjoying and respecting the sport, an athlete has to have the mindset of a champion. Thinking like a perfect athlete will provide the motivation and determination to achieve the goals of a perfect athlete. Consider Bruce Lee, a world renown martial artist and fighter. Lee is known as one of the greatest martial artist in history and is respected for his methods. “If you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it’ll spread over into the rest of your life”, Bruce stated. “It’ll spread into your work, into your morality, into your entire being. There are no limits. There are plateaus, but you must not stay there, you must go beyond them. If it kills you, it kills you. A man must constantly exceed his level.” Bruce Lee tells how the proper mindset is
Even though, people were conditioned to compete in the past, it is not pertinent anymore as it became another aspect in the modern day. Rubin further states, “people brought up this way feel lost.because they exist to compete and they’ve lost their raison d’être in the new situation” (312). Learning to compete with others is taught by an individual’s family and the individual forgets why he/ she is competing as they only focus on beating their fellow mates.
There is a misconception that competition is bad, if a child can experience the thrill of winning and the disappointment of losing, they will be well equipped for the reality of life. Competition provides stimulation to achieve a goal; to have determination, to overcome challenges, to understand that hard work and commitment leads to a greater chance of success. Life is full of situations where there are winners and losers; getting a job; a sports game; not getting into a desired college. People need to learn how to cope with disappointment and then to look forward to the next opportunity to try again. Competition also teaches us to dig deep and find abilities we never knew we had. The pressure to win or succeed can often inspire more imaginative thinking and inspire us to develop additional
Far too soon, a few children are singled out for their athletic promise. . ." ( 239). I believe competition is beneficial because children learn that outcomes are often determined by one 's effort. Life affords many opportunities that may result in disappointment. Children that participate in competitive sports learn how to deal with disappointment without being consumed by it. Statsky also made the point that parents and coaches take the fun out of playing and focus primarily on competing. When I began playing sports, no record was kept of the score. I remember team members asking, "Did we win?". Therefore, I believe that even small children understand that games are developed to be won or
Success goes hand in hand with failure. “You win some, you lose some” is a famous quote which epitomises one of the main core’s of life as these two components are apart of every human being’s daily life. In the same way, they are a part of every sporting event. In life everyone strives for success, yet not always do we attain success instantly, often it requires many failures before success can be achieved. Humphrey asserts that sport ‘brings out the worst in people’, and yes, it is within failure where the worst is brought out of people as many people hate the feeling of failure. However, no matter what one fails at, they will always express their bad side, for example: when one fails at their job, when one fails their license and so on. Sports is the best opportunity for people to learn the benefits and necessity of failure, thus allowing their outlook on failure to be change which in turn corrects the behaviour that comes with failure. Sports also allows one to feel the sense of accomplishment that emanates with success. It therefore teaches the sportsmen how to cope better wit...
