Can you imagine a world without the use of energy? Society relies on energy in their daily lives. As the years go by, more energy is being used by the population, such as electricity. Electricity is used everywhere, such as at home, school, business, etc, but most people don't think about where their power comes from and how it is being generated. There are many ways for energy to be created, such as by coal, oil, solar, nuclear, etc, but large-scale wind farms have been a topic of controversy due to many different factors. Although wind farms create large amounts of energy in a productive amount of time, many people are concerned about the location, social considerations, and the health effects it causes. These factors are very important to …show more content…
When you build a wind farm you have to consider if the area you are building has the proper climate and as well as access to a proper amount of wind, such as valleys. Due to the mountains that surround the land, we still get wind but not as much as it would be on the other side of the mountains. The individual who builds their wind farm has to consider how effective or productive their turbines will be in the location that they are in. Document B says, “Wind turbines can’t always run at 100 percent power like many other types of power plants, since wind speeds fluctuate. Wind turbines can be noisy if you live close to a wind plant, they can be hazardous to birds and bats, and in hard-packed desert areas there is a risk of land erosion if you dig up the ground to install turbines.” The location of the wind turbines is a very important factor because if you build in the wrong area it could lead to other problems such as land erosion. When you make your decision on the area to put your wind farm, you need to consider the location and make sure it won't create any additional problems. The second factor that should be considered before building a wind farm is social
With concern over global warming growing, people are starting to turn a more serious eye toward cleaner sources of energy. Instead of solar power making a comeback as the ideal form, we are seeing a growth in the use of wind power. Wind farms are beginning to crop up all around the country. This new trend has gathered significant attention. Questions are being raised concerning the effects wind farms may have, from critics and supporters alike. Michelle Nijhuis, in the article “Selling the Wind” discusses the arguments on behalf of and in opposition to the increasing use of wind power, addressing what the consequences may be on the United States.
2. Personally i am for wind farms and in my opinion. I think that wind energy has a great potential not only is wind energy very reliable and sustainable. it is also not as expensive as some at the other types of renewable green energy sources.
The proposed wind farm will be built in an area known as Horseshoe Shoal, located five miles off the south shore of Cape Cod, in Nantucket Sound. Cape Wind Associates is the organization planning to build the wind farm. The farm will be visible in all areas that face the sound on Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. The wind farm will consist of 130 wind turbines, each turbine measuring 420 feet in height, each turbine about a quarter of a mile apart, covering a 24-square mile area. If built, it will be the largest wind farm in the world.
This county has a ban on commercial wind turbines (Tindera 2). The environmental concerns of the wind farms including noise, aesthetic impacts, and avian/bat mortality have created this ban of wind energy production. Along with the fear of decreasing property values and issues with supply and transport of electricity produced, this county has chosen to totally outlaw them (Wind Energy Basics 3). Wind energy is not storable so it must be used immediately, but wind patterns blow more at night and during the summer which is when the need for electricity is at the lowest point (Tindera 5). Dave and Stephanie Hulthen, from Dekalb County Illinois, have a first hand experience with a backyard wind farm and don’t enjoy having them nearby.
Renewable resources are resources that have the ability to restock itself in some quantity (Field, 2008). Thus, the amount of the resource available to be processed, is determined by the restock rate (Field, 2008). Renewable energy is commonly categorized with renewable resources. Renewable energy such as wind is beginning to take hold in many parts of Canada such as Alberta and Ontario (Jones, 2013). However, in Ontario, wind power has been seen as more of a problem than a solution.
I personally do not like windy days. However, wind could be helping us more than we realize. We could be using the wind to produce energy. This is what wind turbines do and now I will be researching them to determine the physics involved with them and how they work, their history, along with some statistics from the United States. Then I will go in-depth for the wind turbines of Texas, Washington, and Kansas and compare them.
Wind power is another form of solar power. Wind isn’t only a clean fuel source, but it is one of the most inexpensive e alternative sources of energy. Just as long wind continues to blow and the sun shines then wind power can produce energy to send to many different areas. There aren’t many locations that have continuous wind. And because of that the widespread development of wind power isn’t as great as it could be. Although there are more advantages than disadvantages when it comes to this energy source, the disadvantages should be taken just as seriously. Wind power can harm animals, there was a study that stated birds were coming in contact with turbines and dying. For many people the noise from the turbines is unbearable, and that’s something else that should be taken into
My company recently did a survey that shows that 51% of people think that alternative energy like wind turbines could truly help the environment which is the whole point of ASUs sustainable energy efforts. My compony was also able to find that in New Zealand they replaced their older turbines with more modern turbines and found that they create even more energy (The Cost of Wind Energy). According to this same article there was a report done that stated, “…existing wind farms have been developed with a long run marginal cost…. And that at the lower end of the scale, wind farms are competitive with alternative technologies” (The Cost of Wind Energy)
As the world's population grows, and the already extensive use of technology in our daily lives expands and grows deeper ingrained into our lifestyles, many people overlook the shortcomings of this type of life style. What is powering iPods, computers, and televisions? Currently, the world releases over 26 billion tons of CO2 per year. Americans release about 20 tons of CO2 on a per capita basis annually; however poorer countries limit their annual per capita emissions to less than 1 ton. Many people fail to realize how much of a monetary burden cheap and clean energy would relieve for the poorest two billion people of this world. Some would argue it could in fact be the biggest fundamental change this world sees, when we have a viable solution. Almost everyone in rich countries overlooks the cost of electricity due to the small portion of our budget it accounts for [1]. Wind will need to be part of the clean energy equation. Using wind turbines alone could redu...
In everyday life, there are things that one needs to survive. And sustainability problems arise every day. One such problem is energy loss. The world is using up a lot of energy and new ideas need to be formed to help the rest of the world and the future of the generations that are to follow, to survive. With that the problem is that people use up energy and they do not use it efficiently. Therefore scientists are needed to find ways to deal with the sustainability problem that is arising. That is where wind turbines are used to generate this energy but the actual wind-turbines are very large, loud and they kill birds, thus new designs need to be found in order to help energy usage and to bring the size and structure of the wind turbines to a smaller scale to prevent injuries to nature and the species around it.
Our country is currently suffering energy-wise, we have been powering with inefficient sources for years now and the harm that it is doing to the country has started to become apparent. Renewable energy is the only way to stop, or at the very least set back the inevitable downfall of our ecosystem. I think that the next big breakthrough for renewable energy is implementing off-grid communities that use renewable sources as their main sources of power, so that we can potentially escape the energy rut that we got ourselves stuck in.
Wind turbines are a great source of energy all around the world. Wind Turbines produce wind energy that can be used to power our homes. Wind turbines convert Kinetic energy into mechanical power. Then this mechanical power gets generated into electricity. Wind turbines make energy by the wind turning the large blades, which spin a shaft that is connected to the large blades, which then operates the generator making electricity. One new idea is building wind turbines offshore in the mid-Atlantic. Offshore building of wind turbines means that these large turbines will be placed in the Atlantic Ocean. The building of these wind turbines will provide energy to states like Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia, and New Jersey. These states want to start this project as soon as possible so that the states can start saving money. Since these regions right now are burning fossil fuels uncontrollably with incredible impacts (not only to our air, but to our health) it is crucial to start right away. Offshore wind turbines will provide more jobs, cut pollution, stop warming of our planet, and save us energy costs. These wind turbines can make enough energy offshore to power about 500,000 thousand homes. However, many people disagree with this idea because they believe it is too expensive.
Secondly, 15% of world electricity comes from wind. In order to have wind energy, it is important to have turbines to get the wind in order to produce electricity. Tall turbines produce more energy. The drawbacks of wind power are that it requires steady wind and its installations may interfere with TVs, cellphones, and other electrical devices. However, it is quickly built and there is no pollution or noise produced.
The wind is an incredibly valuable renewable energy source and is in the forefront of renewable energy developments. It is used to convert wind energy into energy that can be harnessed and used via a variety of methods, including; wind turbines, windmills, sails and windpumps. For a renewable energy source, however, it is wind turbines that are used to generate electricity (see figure 1). Wind power has been used for this since the end of the nineteenth century, after Professor James Blyth of the Royal College of Science and Technology first attempted it (Boyle, 2012). However, It wasn’t until the 1980s that using wind power technology was sufficient enough to experience a rapid growth of the technology.
Wind is a form of solar energy. The term wind energy describes the process by which the wind is used to generate electricity or mechanical power. Wind turbines convert mechanical energy from the wind into electrical power. Wind turbines usually have three main parts. There are blades that connect to a central hub, a box behind the blades that contains the generator, and a long stem that connects to the ground. The way how it works is that the wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft that connects to a generator making electricity. After the electricity is produced it is sent through transmission lines to a substation that is sent to business and homes. For the sake of our planet, we must promote a renewable energy economy. Wind power can be a foundation of that sustainable energy future because it provides jobs in states that are building wind turbines, is a renewable energy source, and does not damage our environment. The environment will not be damaged by the pollution, the natural resources will not be used up, and there won’t be generating of hazardous wastes. Welcoming wind energy today will lay the foundation for a healthy tomorrow that will affect everyone in the United States. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
